Everyone mocks this now. It'll be huge, with a mediocre story, but it's fucking EPIC looking, with GROUND BREAKING new visuals. Everyone will lap it up and return to the cinema, because you bet we're going to have a marketing machine kick start with that first trailer next month, issuing everyone free tickets on the hype train.

I'm in.

Choo choo!

Can’t wait for this to make umpteen billion dollars while the internet howls about its lack of cultural impact. Anyone who underestimates Cameron is a moron.

Yeah I’m pretty sure Cameron has magic powers. I fully expect this to be the most successful movie ever made.

First one was only big because of the 3D, that won't wash anymore and also people now know what Avatar is. Cinema has changed so much since 2009 (mainly speaking to Marvel culture here), then on top of that you have covid where not everyone is comfortable with cinemas yet. Inflation on top of that.

I don't think this will entirely tank or anything (if only due to the marketing) but I just can't imagine it reaching the heights of the first movie, financially speaking.

It’s sad that debate about a Cameron film now just revolves around how much money it will make rather than whether it will be any good. I watched Avatar recently for the first time since I originally saw it at the cinema, and it’s an awful film.

Someone needs to do a Colonel Quaritch cut, with just a few establishing shots and end to end Colonel Quaritch. It'd be great!

It is bad but I do think he did an amazing job for making such an incredibly successful film that was so much cgi. It was almost a pixar movie to some extent and the argument that he had to make it so broad I think is fair enough. The concept of an avatar and weird blue cat creatures being the protagonist isn't strange for us nerds of course but to get everyone quickly up to speed and understand what's going on while also completely reinventing 3D filming (YMMV on whether it was worth it but in terms of the industry etc, it was massive) is a hell of a feat to pull off and also make a billion dollars.

Similar to titanic really, he is amazing at telling what are very basic stories in bonkers ways, it's just endlessly disappointing that he doesn't go full on genre movie insanity because he's also a very good businessman.

I get the feeling these will be the same sort of deal, very basic story and characters but with some totally cutting edge technology involved. With any luck, if all the sequels do happen, then it might be possible to make it a more interesting story overall if it does it slowly for all of the appeal to everyone.

He knows what he's doing enough that it will be more watchable than any Michael Bay pish, whatever happens I'm pretty confident.

Avatar isn’t an awful film ffs. It doesn’t have a particularly interesting story or script - it’s easily Cameron’s weakest film - but the action film-making is miles ahead of most modern blockbusters.

If you compare the action scenes in Avatar to the two biggest recent comic book films - Spiderman and the Batman - it’s night and day. Both of those films have really poor last act action sequences in particular, whereas Avatar’s is a banger.

Absolutely this. I think people have forgotten that there are Western directors that can make action films (aside from Gareth Evans).

Cameron is an action director in a way that any Marvel wonk (perhaps Raimi - if he's got the mojo back) or Nolan simply cannot match.

Avatar 2 now has a name. Avatar: The Way of Water.

The trailer will be exclusively with Doctor Strange 2 beginning on 4 May, then going online a week later.

Didn't they announce the titles for all of them ages ago? The Way of Water is certainly familiar.

It was one of several titles reported by the BBC in 2018:

Cameron said in an interview soon afterwards that those titles were "among titles that are in consideration" but not finalised. This is the first time any of them have been confirmed.

‘The way of water’, I don’t know why but that made me giggle for about 5 mins on and off. It’s so lazy, feels like someone just gave up.

I mean, at least call it ‘way of the ocean’ or something? Or even ‘way of the water’ if you’re out of time but;

’the way of water’

Proper lols 😂

It’s certainly ‘cool’ to say Avatar is shit/terrible/awful etc.

It’s his weakest film for sure but it’s not shit, and there’s some great sci-fi in there. That shot of them floating out of their cryotubes still makes me feel funny downstairs.

And I think the age of the record-breaking blockbuster is behind us for now, at least until inflation catches up. This will be hugely successful for a post-Covid film, but it won’t do anything like the numbers Titanic, Avatar and The Avengers did.

Re: the first bit, it may well have reinvented 3D filming but a) it didn't help with the longevity (given that it is largely dead again and has been for years) and b) everybody else seemed to collectively shrug their shoulders and just go for the cheap conversion method for other 3D films, so all those techniques he came up with have seen very little use elsewhere.

It may have been revolutionary, but the masses don't really care.

As for the second bit, I would genuinely prefer a Michael Bay 'rah-rah USA military' - fest to any more Avatar content.

Ah, the whole 'You're only saying it's bad to look cool'. Yep, it must be that

No, it's awful. Overlong with a boring, generic plot and a terrible lead actor (Sam Worthington is one of the most wooden and least charismatic leads I've ever seen in anything he is in).

I still have the wrapped 3D blu-ray of this (and Titantic) that came with my blu-ray player 11? years ago, and I have no interest of ever opening it (despite how good the 3D is - which I don't really remember much of, to be fair.)

There's a lot more to it than just the 3d filming, from the pre vis stuff to also digital protection etc. The masses may not care but he is and always has been a huge force for innovation in film making, whether you like the movies he uses to do that or not.

He's very similar to (but a lot less shit than) lucas in regards to what he did with the prequels.

If Transformers could be a world-leading film franchise for most of a decade despite a lack of a single likeable character, universal critical distain, and strong competition from the Marvel movies, then I would not be surprised if Avatar 2-5 dominate the box office from now until the oil runs out.

It's not a matter of social or critical currency. They're big expensive movies which will get big expensive marketing budgets and the competition will move their biggest hitters out of the way. Blockbusters are a self-fulfilling prophecy.

While I agree that the marketing does a huge part regardless of quality, there's still a gulf in ability to make a good film between bay and Cameron.
