I'm a bit disappointed by this news to be honest. While I enjoyed Avatar a great deal, I'd have been happier for Cameron to do something else for the next five years. 2015 before starting a non-Avatar project is a long time to wait. I assume this puts to bed the Cleopatra rumours, along with any thoughts of a Battle Angel movie too.

Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman announced today that Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Cameron has agreed to make Avatar 2 and 3 as his next films.

Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in nearly $2.8 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. Avatar won Golden Globe awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director; and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won Oscars for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.

In Avatar, Cameron takes audiences to a spectacular world beyond imagination and limitations, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization.

Avatar was written by Cameron from an idea he nurtured for over a decade, while working on the technology necessary to realize its wholly imagined world. Working with Joe Letteri and his team at Peter Jackson's WETA Digital, Cameron created a fully immersive 3D cinematic experience of a new kind, where revolutionary technology that was invented to make the film disappeared into the emotion of the characters and the epic nature of the story.

How unfortunate , Cameron must have a very, very sweet profit share to tempt him to make another 2 back to back, though you'd have thought Titanic/Avatar would have guaranteed a decent retirement fund already.

He's talked in the past that at least one of the sequels will take place in/under Pandora's seas. Whether that's still true is unknown at this point.

Based on the success of the first, I'd imagine that Cameron would be more open to trying as a story that's a little less 'tried and true'. The first movie was a big risk on a technical level, so the simplistic narrative meant that it could play it safe and aim for the widest audience. Now that audience is in place, Avatar 2 could allow for something a little more original. Hopefully, anyway.

He promised to explore both the oceans and the interior of Pandora and possibly the rest of the star system by the time the 3rd film is done:

JC: Well you’ve already defined what the challenge will be on the next “Avatar” picture, which is to do what we did before at half the price and in half the time. Again, that’s an impossible goal, we won’t accomplish that, but if we can reduce by 25% in both categories, we’ll have really accomplished something. We know our methodology works. We also know it took two years to come up with. It didn’t even become efficient until the last two months of the production. So we were four years into a project before we had this machine running smoothly. So we take a snapshot of that moment in our production and say that’s what we look like on Day 1, we’re going to do better. Now, none of that has anything to do with coming up with a great story or great characters or great new settings and so on. That all is a given. That’s not to say that it’s done yet, it’s a given that we have to do that. But for me, the technical challenge is in improving the process having proved that it works.

We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.

Are we looking at 2017 for a non-Avatar film now, providing he starts work as soon as Avatar 2 is finished? Then again, we waited long enough after Titanic but still, I wouldn't have minded another original title first.

Did they take out massive loans so they could begin their own mining operation only to discover that the market for Unobtanium has collapsed, leading to a spate of home repossessions before Jake Sully returns to fight off the bailiffs.

Console yourself with the thought that it's because the tech still ain't good enough yet to do the concept justice , I just hope Cameron is still interested in pursuing it 5 years from now, a James Cameron comic (Manga) adaption, truly something with a lot of potential for amaze.

Thinking about Avatar makes me angry, so I'll just say that I agree with the majority of posts here that wish he would make another film in the meantime rather than dedicating the next few years remaking Ferngully 2: The Magical Rescue.
