Professor Layton Vs Phoenix Wright

This seems to be getting reasonable reviews. I've barely touched the downloadable PW game though so I'm probably going to skip it for now.

8s from both Eurogamer and NintendoLife

Edge gives it its seal of approval: http://www.edge-online.com/review/professor-layton-vs-phoenix-wright-ace-attorney-review/

"If you like Phoenix Wright and Layton games you will like this. If you don't like Phoenix Wright games, this will get on your tits. There are only 70 Layton puzzles, but there is a joke about stepladders for the Wright fanboys. Overall, I would give this game 8/10"

Sold!!

They should make a Pokemon vs Phoenix Wright next. Phoenix and Maya could attempt to prove that keeping animals in cramped, round balls and only releasing them to participate in fights is, in fact, animal cruelty.

For the purposes of understanding this game you might as well play through The Curious Village, I think the appeal of crossovers like this lies partly in the way your pleasure buttons get prodded by seeing characters you have some affection for get wheeled onstage for their little turn. If you haven't experienced one of the Professor's batshit adventures (and they are usually batshit) then some of the magic will probably be lost on you. I wouldn't hurry though, this is bound to hang around in shops at full price for months.

Anyone picked this up today? I'm about an hour in only. I'm much more into the AA games than I am Layton, find Layton games rather ponderous, so hopefully won't get too bogged down in Layton stuff, but I like that the Layton bit of the prologue playsa bit like a Layton game (except the handful of puzzles so far actually have something to do with the story, unlike the Layton games I've played before) and the Phoenix stuff looks, plays and feels like an Ace Attorney game (so far, of course this will get flipped around and subverted very quickly I am sure). Although the voice acting in the courtroom is a bit jarring - Maya's voice sucks.

Layton-ised versions of classic Phoenix Wright music \o/.

Just finished.

Had some reservations about the Labyrinthia "reveal", as it rivals Final Fantasy VIII for sheer ludicrousness, and I didn't think the trial sections were as sound as in the main AA games.

But then Edgeworth appeared.

GOTY

So due to the requirement that you need to complete the game before you can download the DLC and the imminent closer of the 3DS eShop I am currently playing this to completion.

I haven't completed a Layton game since The Last Spector and have found Spirit of Justice underwhelming and have only reached the third case in it. Five hours into this and I'm enjoying it a lot. The puzzles so far are a lot simpler than in the normal Layton games and the weird contrast between the townfolk being the standard dull Layton inhabitants with important characters being hyperactive Phoenix Wright characters is fun. I also appreciate that you can use the stick to move the magnifying glass when investigating and the game doesn't just use the touch screen.

Each week up to the start of September 2014, there will be new content to unlock in-game on your Nintendo 3DS, either as a Special Episode or a Special Gallery. Episodes take place after the main game story and include challenging new puzzles, while Galleries feature all manner of art with comments from the developers! You’ll even be treated to some entertaining illustrations of Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright drawn in the style of their counterparts!

Once you’ve finished the game, simply select ‘Extra Content’ from the main menu, load your finished game save, then tap ‘Unlock Content’ to unlock the latest addition. Be sure to check in-game regularly for these free updates!

The content is probably already on the card but it needs to connect to a server somewhere to access it which I assume won't be available once the eShop closes.

I've completed the game now and think it was great fun. The mix of the two series really works and while it is mostly Layton gameplay the twist to the Phoenix Wright gameplay really works and even the hint system is nice little QOL improvement with the hints pointing you in the right directions in the court cases but never explicitly telling you the answer. If like me you think of a typical Layton puzzle solution involves writing a number into a box those puzzles are few and far between in in this game with it mostly leaning into puzzles you cannot get wrong like solving a maze or catching mice.  The extra bonus that downloads once you finish the game is a great self referential epilogue and it's just a shame that as things stand there will no more games starring Wright or Layton.

Only three more moths before the free DLC disappears though!

Was hoping it wouldn't vanish as its offered through the game rather than the shop itself. They gave already said redownloads will be available, was hoping this would be the same

Hmm; not for me I'm afraid. The story is simply too convoluted for it to be enjoyable even by AA standards, and the ending drags on far, far too long. Almost at the end now, but this is definitely my least favourite AA game.

The ending for this was just a massive cringe:

Spoiler

"I have rare and uncurable ass cancer, so I will die... "

Spoiler

"But hang on! I just received a letter saying that my company has successfully developed a cure against it."

Spoiler

Way below any mainline AA game I've played. And I think I've played them all.
