A Serbian Film - Retired Adult film star does one last job

I first heard about this when it was reviewed on AICN and their coverage of South By South West. It's caught the news again because there's been a reported passing out/throwing up incident during a screening at Cannes, where the producers are attempting to sell the film.

"Serbian Film" revolves around a former male pornstar who signs on for an "artistically-designed" porn film that offered him a generous payment. As the filming begins, the man begins to suspect that the director's intentions may be darker than mere pornography.

Before there cries of "hypehypehype", even the cats at Twitch Film were disturbed by what the saw, though their review doesn't actually reveal what the saw -

Not sure what we're looking at here in terms of content but I'd imagine there's a good chance it's not going to see a release in the UK. That said, a follow up story claims the film has been bought.

So, hyperbole?

I wonder if that's also the point at which he begins to suspect that the director's intentions may be darker than mere pornography

What a pointlessly repulsive thing to have in a film though.

Yeah, apparently so. None of the reviews mention it but I think I saw a reference to it in a comment or a blog or something, and then once you google "a serbian film" and "

newborn

" together it's talked about a fair bit. I suppose it could be some viral cleverness but it doesn't seem that way, just some rather depressing vileness.

Although it is a bit strange that the reviews all seem to be along the lines of "Yes, it's quite repulsive in parts but it's a technically marvelous debut film". You'd have thought a scene like that would be unbrushoverable.

I was intrested to see this until i read about THAT scene. It sounded like a twisted 13 beloved, apparently when printing the film to celluloid the company twice burnt the print as they didn't know what they were looking at. Think i'll give it a miss.

Well the film is certainly going to get the column inches it wants by adding a scene like that. I see that the filmmakers are talking about the themes of the film being about where we draw the line between titilation and anti-social perversion but there is never going to be enough justification for such a scene other than it getting cheap publicity. Reviewers are in a tough spot too because if they are up front with what is shown then it will undoubtedly get a reaction from the public and people will talk about the film but if they are vague about the specifics all it does is pique interest further (what could possibly be so disturbing that they dare not mention it?).

I would never watch a scene like that. There is no need in any context. Disgusting.

Yeah, I agree. There's no justification for something like that. I find it slightly worrying that anyone would find that acceptable, and it perhaps says a lot about our society that someone would think that's a suitable thing to put in a film, whether it be for shock value or trying to make some ridiculous point or whatever.

I'm no prude, really, but that's just sick.

Does it make any difference, though? It's not real, so can someone explain to me why you would need to 'justify' the pretend

rape of a baby

, when you presumably don't need to 'justify' the pretend Human Centipede, or the pretend whatever disgusting stuff happens in 'torture porn' movies (I've never seen any, so I can't be more specific).
