Nintendo 3DS - first thread

anyone noticed very faint vertical lines on the top screen where the raised surrounding of the bottom screen has been touching it when closed? They rub away but it's a bit worrying.post-8803-066318500 1301493878_thumb.jpg

This was bothering me more than it should, so I cut a piece of lens-cleaning cloth (the stuff you get with glasses) to fit an area the size of the top screen and keep it sandwiched between the screens when closed. The cloth is very thin and it means I always have something to clean the screens with if they get a bit grubby.

funny that you mention that. I've been using the cleathing cloth that came with my HORI screen protectors to sandwich my DSlite ever since I put them on

I never played any Star Fox games apart from the DS version (which I thought was a bit rubbish). Am I in for a treat?

The DS version isnt all that great unfourtunatly.

Starfox 64 is very good, although i have very fond memories from the N64 days. I bought it again on the wii VC and it still holds up, but i like some of the changes i hear about with the 3DS version so im quite looking forward to it for those reasons.

the build quality leaves a bit to be desired.. Things like the 3D slider, for example, are a bit flimsy and not too accurate. Other buttons seem to have been placed "where there was room", rather than where a design expert would put it.

I think the overall quality seems good but I agree on the 3D slider, it doesn't feel accurate at all. And the three buttons under the bottom screen are simply horrid.

I like the + and - digital buttons for adjusting the volume a la the DSI XL etc.

Surely with enough 'notches' a similar system would work with the 3D? Add a mac style bezel indicating changes and it would allow people to more easily remember their personal position and stop accidental knockings?

I consider picking up Pro Evo during my lunchbreak. Any reason why I shouldn't?

I gave it a couple of hours, its exactly like PES on a tv console, with all the + and -. I was expecting something a bit more fun and easygoing but its very serious and very sterile, almost boring. But Im not a footy fan at all.

Another thing that bothered me with it was that the font is incredibly small, tiny white characters that bleed out into the black background which makes them a bit hard to read. It looks very unprofessional. And then the implementation of the 3D is pretty poor outside of the actual games, which in themselves are very nicely done. Although you do have to press SELECT or START to skip all the drawn-out replays and cinematics, which is pain with those buttons at the bottom of the console. Should have been able to press one of the face buttons for this, since theyre so frequent and drawn-out. Expect to have to look at a lot of these each game unless you make a habit of stretching for the aforementioned buttons. Apart from on the player select screen, there is no 3D effect to be seen outside of the turf, all the menus are in 2D and theres this terrible emo/dance soundtrack which keeps pumping away at max volume. Incredibly stressful and very sloppily done.

Theres is certainly enough to do in there if you catch on with it.

Unless youre a big footy fan, avoid.

Yeah as much as I love the little thing it really reminds me of the original DS.Does what it should out the trap but could do with tightening up a la lite.

It has that same slightly awkward feel.

Love it though and will be happy to stump up for a Ver.2.0 in a year or two.

Do people actually remember what the v1 DS looked like...

It's much closer to the DSi really, so I don't think that significant redesign is going to come (or is really needed) anywhere near so soon.

So, the 3DS has actually potentially improved my eyesight believe it or not.

Having experienced issues with seeing it, I popped into my opticians last night after work to ask about it and it turns out that rather than my brain having both my eyes' inputs, it's constantly favouring one or the other due to the minor damage I have in my right eye. He's suggested I could have surgery to correct this if I wish as it's something that can cause headaches and other vision issues, and there're also new(ish) techniques where you can 'train' your eyes and brain to focus more properly.

Not strictly gaming and probably boring for most of you, but yeah - never knew about above issue until now!

Yeah when I had a play of it, it did feel a bit cheap and i could instantly tell what would be improved in 3DS revision 2.0.

Still, it seems better than what we got in the original DS rev1.

we are all going to end up buying the 3DS lite though arnt we?

Anyway should be getting 3DS later, although my pilotwings not arriving till tommorrow.

Err in the fact that it's a design that would benefit from a little tweaking (same as the original DS) not how it looks compared to an original DS.

Lite/XL style makeover within two years no doubt about it.

Loving the Streetpass thing! Luckily I'm in an office of nerds so I get about 8 hits a day. Already at the exit of the Gloomy Grotto in the Quest and not too far off finishing my Zelda panel in the puzzle mode. I'm really looking forward to seeing what other Streetpass features people add to their games.

Not that I'd buy it, but wasn't Dead or Alive being touted as a Day One release right up until Day One? Wonder why it got pushed back.

Nope, they announced it would be delayed about two weeks ago; it was on Kotaku.

Scared of Street Fighter? Ironic really because it's arguably going to play better due to it being a four button fighter anyway. I'm certainly looking forward to it.

I would imagine it was almost certainly SFIV that did it, and I'm in a similar boat; I thought they made the announcement before some of the recent disasters. I can't abide with SF on pads anymore, but I'm really looking forward to DOA:D because it's more suited to pad controls - not just because of the buttons but because of the tap-tap nature of its special moves on the D-pad.

You should email Nintendo with that, I'm sure they'll get a design expert in for their next handheld then.

We've all played Game Dev Story. I think they were just unwilling to stretch to pull in a contract specialist for this role and instead went with the in-house sound engineer who had a bit of energy and spare time on his hands. If only they'd used the Usability Expert from the travelling salesman, v1.0 3DS would be much better.

Man, StreetPass Quest is bizarrely fun. The 3DS actively makes me want to walk more with the pedometer to earn play coins to buy heroes for StreetPass Quest, or other items, or puzzle pieces. Genius! My fiance also went into uni yesterday and got a few StreetPass hits - it's quite clever really as it gives you incentives to want to walk and be more active, as well as mingle with other people etc.

A lunchtime wander around Cardiff netted me 2 hits. Still not beat the Level 3 ghost and now spent all my coins for the day :(

More love for Streetpass and the quest thing, got another two hits at lunch today walking through Kingston town centre. I've also hired a few helpers in the quest which got me a little further, unlocking a Pikmin hat

Found this weird chap by using magic too:

One thing that is strange is that I'm pretty sure people aren't properly setting up their SF4 streetpass data because I've met two other people with it and we never fought on either occasion.

Went through the Friend Code List & added a whole bunch of people, but my Code in the list is still off by 1 digit & it taunts me with my inability to do anything about it. :(

I just added mine twice when the first attempt removed all the 0's from the start. Messy but it worked
