Nintendo 3DS - first thread

Even more than you currently do? ;)

I think people are getting a bit impatient with the Streetpass thing. It's been out one day. Give it a couple of months and every train journey/walk to town will be a frenzy of activity.

I was pleasantly surprised to get three today. But the city was extremely busy and I went into two game shops, so maybe I should have expected more.

So it's not sold out then?

Hardly. It's everywhere. 20 in my local asda, 28 between 3 blockbusters (was looking everywhere for that samurai game today, so did some asking around). 15 in tesco. So much for Game's scare tactics of telling people you wouldn't be able to buy it for months <_<

I bought Street Fighter and Ghost Recon today. Loving Street Fighter. Really smooth (Even with 3d on) and overall just looks ace. Ghost Recon I've only played the first two missions but I think I'm going to like that one. Nice subtle use of the 3d to increase the atmosphere.

Of the other games I've bought.

Nintendogs looks so, so good when your dog is face up against the screen. Is there a tutorial for training your dog for the competitions? Mine is a disobedient sod

Pilot Wings. I like this but I'm not finding the 3d terribly impressive

Ridge Racer. Ace

Rayman. A game of two halves. The intro and cut scenes are godawful. The actual game looks really good in 3d

Sims 3. Haven't had much time to look at this yet but it seems pretty fully featured.

I picked up two female Miis while out in town today. I don't seem to be able to use them as heroes though.

I know. After what people were saying I expected it to be the game that looked the best and while I can see it it just appears to be two planes really. The vehicle and the scenery. To my eyes Street Fighter appears to have more depth.

But that seems to be the 3DS. Different people have different eyes :) Different people are prefering the effects on different games. I will say one thing though. The more I play with it the better the 3d is looking.

IMHO this the best Nintendo console launch, after the SNES and N64, and those launched with Mario....

You're surely forgetting something:

(I know the two-in-one cart wasn't released until later, but both games were launch titles nevertheless).

It's interesting hearing some people say they're already finding other Mii's on StreetPass whilst out and about - I expected it to be a pretty redundant feature here in the UK. Perhaps might come across more in the center of London, or New York - but I thought it would really be most useful in Japan and such where nearly everybody seems to own a DS/3DS. I'd like to stay optimistic and hope that it becomes the next big thing and takes off, would be very cool constantly bumping into other people out and about - but I doubt it will in much of Britain.

I can't praise faceraiders enough... The way your faces 'talk' to each other is just brilliant.

Here's the thing... Remove the 3D and there's no reason why something like faceraiders couldn't have been done on a phone... But it hasn't.

I love Nintendo.

Yeah. Ihe iPhone 4 has been out for about 9 months now with its gyroscope and camera. Amazing no-one thought of it before.

Sorry to hear you guys didn't get any Streetpasserbys. The fact I managed to get seven surprised me - somehow the girlfriend got even more and I was with her. I guess hanging about around the games shops helped, but Norwich delivered today.

Dont forget to make sure that the streetpass is set up properly for all the games you have which have it. And yes Flub - the wireless has to be on with the 3DS in sleep mode - I think not having a game suspended may help as well. Mine was in sleep mode for 5 hours and the battery indicator remained at max.

I guess it's unfashionable to say it but I really love the 3D on this. It really makes a huge difference on Pilotwings, it really makes the game feel immersive - the game definitely feels more dead with it off. I can't say if it's helping me fly through rings more easily or anything, but it certainly seems more like I'm really flying.

Agreed. Quite impressed with the animation on the faces too - it's quite convincing in the movement when they go all evil. We scanned in a teddy face and it was quite amusing! Like Naughty Bear, but better.

"something like" Faceraiders has been done hundred of times on mobiles (no doubt even 'inspired' Faceraiders itself).

Using friends faces though, yeah - seeing myself grimace (eerily realistically, it has to be said) was a lovely Ninty twist on things, I'll give you that.

Absolutely loving the 3rd. Just thinking about all the titles they could bring out. How about virtual fighter or online multiplayer 4 player powerstone? I think I might just about wet myself. There's a franchise that could do with a rerelease. Bloody iPod correcting my words again.

Its a pretty cool evolved form of the Gameboy Camera, where you had to take a few pictures of your face to be the final boss in the Galaga style game.

I didn't want to use my own face so I'm using history's greatest monsters. That is, Hitler, The Joker and Bennett from Commando. Any other ideas? I was going to try a T-rex but it just didn't look so great.

I've used Manchester United's Nani and TV's James Cordon.

Nah not forgotten that, there wasn't that much a buzz about the old nes on release I think most people thought it was too expensive. You could get an Amiga round the same price believe me the NES was a low key release here in blighty.

It's just a fantastic, surprising bit of kit really.

I know it's been mentioned already, but these reviewers thundering through Pilotwings in under a couple of hours and rating the game accordingly must be truly joyless. It's great.

I've not even looked at Face Raiders or Street Pass Plaza yet.
