Nintendo 3DS - first thread

3D rufus is disappointed in everyone who didn't get a 3DS yet. my 3D phone number is 4940 - 5415 - 5389 (all welcome of course but please only add me if you actually want to play some street fighter. i don't want to go through the social anguish of wondering how long is appropriate to wait before removing friends with whom who i've never played a game! i'm sure anyone with an xbox 360 will understand). the friend card has a spot to put your favourite game icon on it, and a comment like an xbox motto thing but slightly shorter so i had to get creative in thinking up a new one, but it's okay now.

you can import your wii miis or whatever but you can't do it until you've created your first one on the 3DS which you then can't delete and which will be your main mii forever, so i spent ten minutes diligently copying the features of my wii mii over to the 3DS system by hand, holding up the 3DS against the screen to compare. not because my wii mii looks much like me but just because, well, you know, i don't want to abandon him after all these years. i'd feel bad just making a replacement. i felt a bit silly doing this but also wondered why they decided not to let you import an existing mii as your main mii in the first place. as previously discussed and now reinforced i hate miis. except the one to which i've become somehow attached and now has a cloned brother with a dodgily 3Dised nose.

my brain - rather than my eyes - hurt a lot when it started doing the 3D stuff but i've learned to adjust to it by spending five minutes on it then doing something else. so the first five were confusing and i could see it but it was like an illusion about which my brain felt suspicious. then i ate dinner and the next five minutes it all made more sense and looked nice but i couldn't decide where to set the slider and so hurt my brain a bit more doing that. then i played some old fashioned big screen shootyman for an hour or so and came back again and it just worked.

some of it is so good in a way that feels totally effortless - the way stuff fades to the background when you bring up the home menu (i love this and have been cancelling one application into another just to see it), the way there's a bunch of different fun things to do before you even try a game, even the way there's an SD card already sitting there in the slot, etc - and other bits are bad in a way that feels like, because they don't need to make the effort, they just didn't make any effort at all. why can't you import your wii mii before creating some other abomination? why do you both have to enter friend codes (according to the instructions) rather than one person get an invite to just press "accept" on from the other (okay, i guess i can imagine a reason for this)? why does your favourite mii still have to wear red trousers? why doesn't it look a bit nicer?

of course, all of this is dwarfed by the amazingness of dropping an easy 3-hit combo against rose with the endless african savannah stretching out behind you - and it really does stretch out - or finally starting to feel like i'm getting the hang of double quarter circle commands and landing rufus' ultra off one of my big console setups. and the photo stuff is crazy even when you're just pointing it at random stuff (fair warning: i've never seen a 3D movie so am new to any of this).

We're all strong until launch day eh Mike.

Tell me about it! This would inevitably lead to divorce. We blatantly can't afford it. And yet, the lure of THE NEW is so strong. (Maybe the "you're lucky I didn't buy an iPad 2" approach will work - the lesser of two evils!)

RLLMUK 3DS FRIEND CODES DATABASE

Please use this form to enter your Rllmuk username and 3DS friend code.

You can view the full list of usernames/codes here.

This two step process might seem a little annoying, but it worked really, really well for the Starcraft 2 players database. It's better if people aren't editing the original document, as despite everyone's best intentions, someone always comes along and accidentally completely fucks it up  If you make any mistakes let me know and I can delete your incorrect entry.

If someone could add this to the OP it would be great.

If you want to go ahead and put some test entries in using the form that's fine, just make it obvious that it can be deleted :)

Just about to start adding some peeps from this list! Not too sure if it's already been mentioned, haven't read much of the thread since as I've been playing on my shiny new toy, but is there some way to add "notes" or something to your entry? Just realised that I've put down my forum name as Rikku, but my 3DS name is Tutsie. :)

Been playing with the system for about an hour... Very impressed.

I only have Ridge Racer and Pilotwings but both give a superb immersive experience when played in 3D. There is some crosstalk/ghosting at times but it's forgivable when placed alongside the overall experience.

However, amongst all the good points lies a significant negative... I was disappointed to see that DS games look noticeably blurry in their translation to the 3DS higher res screens... :(

Got my 3DS from Tescos yesterday and got Ridge Racer and Pilot Wings with it.

Neat little system and the 3DS is really cool but am i the only one thinking it's pretty much the same old experience but just in '3D'?

I think it's possibly because that there isn't a game that actually uses the 3D for it's game play that I feel a bit under whelmed and tbh regretting my purchase.

Convince me to keep it!

I think the fact that most supermarkets have plenty of stock, cheaper than most of the online places proves once again that pre-ordering is a stress you do not need to put yourself through.

Mainly the mail-order thing. I never understood why people would use mailorder when they absolutely GOT TO HAVE something on a given day, especially if there's no real monetary benefit. I ordered with Amazon (which I knew would take longer due to international shipping anyway) because of the huge price difference, but otherwise I would have just popped into a store and got one from the shelf.

I just called two different Currys stores in Plymouth. They're selling the 3DS with a selected game for £174. I made them double check, and they said yep they got the prices in this morning. I'll be heading there soon, so will confirm later. Both stores said they had plenty available. I called Toys R Us (who I have my preorder with) and they do price match, but only on solus systems and not bundles. They did say I can get my £10 deposit back, though.

And they wont be coming out with games that use 3D for gameplay either. They've stated that they they wont allow it.

With the 3-4 hours battery life I am very glad that I've not bothered.

I would still love one though. If it were free.

Just called my local Currys store, and they said it's £197 for the console on its own, or £222 with a game

Excuse me if this has been asked a million times already, but it that green 3D light always on, even when the slider is turned to off??

I'm still confused by this. Should the green 3D light always be on? I assumed it would switch off when you pulled the 3D slider down to off.

A thousand times this.

Knowing I was going to import my Wii Mii over I just made a crappy 3DS Mii so to get to the option to transfer and now you can't delete the little sod. Ridiculous. Why they just didn't give you the option to transfer over to start with or then to change/delete your primary Mii is beyond me. Grrr.

I double checked with them, and was put through to someone else and was told they had an updated price list this morning. Both stores said the same thing. I almost don't believe it either, which is why I called two different stores. I'm heading up there soon to find out for certain, and will post here with my results.

The 3D light goes off when playing normal DS games. AS someone said earlier, hold select on boot up and it lowers the Resolution of the original DS game, making it look a million times better!. I have Nintendogs coming today, but I really want more games :( Thinking of getting street fighter and Pro Evo later on :)

I've added you for some Street Fighting mash ups. Along with everyone else who has posted in the thread.
