I reckon we should get started on Mukville Grand Central Station, for when minecarts get stabilised (hopefully soon!). Not sure whether we should go for underground, overground or skyrail- underground would be a bit of a dull trip and hard to navigate while digging the tunnel; overground could require some demolition of trees and the like but would almost certainly be easiest; skyrail would be the most scenic but could be a bit of an eyesore and material-intensive. The bonus of the former is that the station could be built largely, if not entirely, underground, and so be really central while unobtrusive- and it would be easy to expand it whenever a new destination was opened up.

We could go at a constant level throughout the whole thing, digging through hills and the like, bridging over sea etc. That may be the best option.

I reckon it would work best as a series of shuttles between destinations (e.g. central <-> chasers <-> 1up <-> wicker man <-> new comradia) each would have one shuttle going each way (so that you didn't get stuck at one end with no carts and have to wait for it to come back after you press a button). If it was made such that you had to get off the cart in a specific direction, and in so doing tripped a pressure plate which sent it back to its resting station, that would work. 'Fast trains' could also work if someone wanted to lay a track directly to a destination (or indeed, destinations could just be reached by travelling through Central).

Also, we need a Hollywood-esque sign. If only there were more hills around.

I can help with the transport :)

Once mplayer tracks/minecarts are a-fixed, expect to see Mas on! I love the machinery of MC>

If I'm going to purely build, I don't want to have to mine, I want to be able to fly about, teleport and be able to operate in some other way than manually fiddling with one block at a time. It takes so long to make stuff that, for me, the satisfaction of the self-set goal of designing and completing a structure doesn't match the effort required.

It sounds like you've just described Creative, the forerunner to /indev /infdev and the current survival alpha, which pretty much is a playhouse with infinite of every type of block and admin options for flight. Plus there're macroes you can use for rapid construction.

I think it's kind of necessary that the capability for creativity within the mechanics, like the rollercoasters and aquaducts and so on, stays in survival and isn't entirely separated into a different mode. Without this kind of open-endedness he really couldn't sell and interate on the game in this manner, and it has a great viral effect that makes it something people are aware of.

People keep comparing it to Dwarf Fortress and despite being very different games mechanically, their notabbility through the stories people tell in them like Boatmurdered mean they share similar space in popular conciousness.

From Notch's twitter

I just made the most unfair mob ever even more unfair. You will hate the Ghast.
It's not invisible. I haven't been able to kill a single one yet, though.. i will try with bows.

Yikes! :(

Someone was saying earlier it was too easy to get safe with a few blocks of dirt, I've got a feeling this badboy moves through walls.

Construction has started on Mukville Grand Central Station. It's pretty much directly through the cathedral from /home, near the road to New Comradia and the house that's there (once it's up and running we'll make a shuttle service as close to /home as possible). I don't have any particular plans for it other than a main concourse which can be extended out ad infinitum as we open new lines (which is why I had it backing onto the sea rather than bit closer to /home), with the platforms sticking out at either side. I have no architectural plans for what the platforms will look like, so if someone wants to do a few that would be great.

If you do, make sure that each platform has space for an incoming and outgoing track, and that there will need to be some sort of mechanism (probably a pressure pad) such that whenever you arrive at a station and get out of the minecart, it goes speeding back to its home station (that way there will always be one there, or on its way, if someone needs transport).

If the proprietors of any of the out-of-town destinations want to start making their train route (as direct as possible, please- we could always make a scenic train for any particularly cool bits of environment), that'd be cool as well, just make sure that if it has to run parallel to the train station fairly close to it to try to avoid doing so at ground level, so there's space for new platforms.

Well at least nothing is smashing down the Walls...yet.

That would be good to see though. Some enemies could burrow through dirt, but not stone. Or perhaps some could breach also stone, but not iron!

ive just zoomed around all the locations on the penny arcade server and the building work is very impressive. However. there definitely has been a lot of terra-forming for the world to look like it is, the area containing Rapture for one has definitely been carved out along with areas for Columbia.

their mineshaft system is done really efficiently though. they've developed a grid based mining quarry that gives maximum yield over all available surface area of the ground under the surface.

This is their second version. When Rapture and Columbia started expanding toward other people's creations, they decided to start afresh, except they brought Rapture and Columbia with them. The new map was heavily terraformed in the beginning to create the separate zones and to accommodate Columbia and Rapture.

Eight i'm in a cave and there was a sound like a plane going by, WTF WAS IT!!

Haha. I had a few of these, and near shat myself each time.

Turns out, the game plays these odd noises when you're near an enclosed, unlit space. In other words, it's pointing you towards hiddern caverns. Or, in my case, punishing me for my rushed approach to construction.

The East stand is completed, shotski and wroth, and turner completes the dressing rooms; so a few of us chill out in the home dressing room bath. Sexy!

oooh first proper post after to many years of lurking, Hurrah! *bows* For a Java game... go figure.

This might be a dumb question but any way to back up Minecraft World Saves? As in Singleplayer ones. Having lost 2 worlds and however many hours work now to pc crashes (blah blah, fix the pc issues...meh!) I want to hurt something/someone.

They are kept in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\saves\ Just zip up the World1 or whatever directory and put it somewhere safe.

There are a few dedicated Minecraft backup utils as well.
