Call of Duty: Black Ops - *Multiplayer Thread*

I tried to get back into it over Christmas but I'm washing my hands of COD until they fix the fundamental flaws that have been making my blood boil for far too long. I was in a match last night with an assault rifle. I kept getting into firefights with this SMG guy and lost every single one. I knew it was bullshit at the time. I went to the theatre mode afterwards, watched it, and even through his view I hit him first with a FAMAS at medium to long range every single time but he still managed to down me with one shot from his peashooter, two at most. At. Medium. To. Long. Range. When. I. Had. Just. Stuck. A. FAMAS. Round. In. Him.

Fuck. Off. Treyarch.

It's a shame because I have a great time in Combat Training. If I could move around and shoot like that in the real thing, I'd never look twice at another game.

I'm really enjoying this at the moment. There has been a few times where I've shouted in rage at the lag, but its not a deal breaker.

I'm loving the dive feature... That has saved my ares quite a few times, nothing more fun than getting hit from somewhere, diving headfirst through a window (breaking it as you go), then spinning round and waiting for the fucker to come after you :D

Just remember not to dive through a door onto a trip mine....

Having tried offline training mode, I have to admit that lag perhaps isn't quite as bad as I'd thought. Seems the guns are inherently pretty inaccurate.

Amen whoever said that some unlocks are a bit worthless, though. I've just gotten the MPL, and it seems inferior to the last unlock (the dinky little PM-thingy) except ammo count.

Also tried the FAL, and while it is suitably different, I do find it hard work. Anyone else run with this?

I really like the FAL, but you have to treat it like the DMR in Halo Reach - you have to wait for the gun to control itself slightly before you shoot again at distance. It is easily one of the most accurate guns in the game though.

I unlocked the final assault rifle (G11) the other day and instantly knew I'd found my new favourite gun. The noise it makes is unreal, the 3 shot semi-auto burst which I usually hate means I rarely run out of ammo, the low power scope means I get to snipe without having a sniper rifle and the rail reload is amazing. I don't know if it's actually any better than my usual AK47u SMG loadout but I just love playing with it.

Is this supposed to be such a horrible, jerky mess on PS3 or is there something up with my machine?

I don't think it is lag or anything just a terrible frame rate, feels nearly unplayable after going from MW2 on 360 :(

It's an abomination on PS3. You could almost forgive the frame rate issues on a campaign mode, but you'd have to be a masochist to attempt to play that thing online with all the problems it has. Nothing but rage awaits.

I've found it's got slightly better on ps3 ( in the last week or so) in that I'm managing to finish more games instead of getting a bloody disconnection message.

For some reason, I haven't had Nuketown as a map for about the last 10 hours play.

maybe a bit but if it was me i would have turned around and used the other door about 15 mins before the teammate had stolen the package... time was wasted

I though about this but it would have made no difference-whether I had set off straight away or later on, i would have 'lost' as he was next to the package and i had to run all the way around.

If it was ammo or something equally throw away I wouldn't have minded as much, but it being a Rolling Thunder (which the useless prick didn't manage to kill anyone with), I was well fucked off.

Hanoi is the worst offender for this kind of behaviour, there's a spawn spot at the back of the map with only one entrance, been in games of TDM where I've either been stuck in there all game or seen someone blocking at least 2 people in. Not only is it going to get you killed when the enemy finally finds you, but whether you quit because of it or sit through it, it's most likely going to count as a loss.

This game would be a lot better and many of the issues wouldn't be there if the community wasn't mostly full of tossers.

That spot is so dumb. Not only does that crappy little alcove serve to purpose other than to trap people in, it's also got pieces of scenery that look like you'll be able to jump on them to vault the wall only for some reason you can't get on them. Treyarch!

That Firing Range one looks like they almost planned for that to happen...

I've not had too many problems with the servers. Definitely more than MW2, but it's certainly not much of a worry for me. I like the level of customisation available in this (although it's just a nice touch, not a game changer. I hope they stick with it though) and the less intrusive Killstreak rewards make the game more enjoyable, but the majority of the maps are pretty dire and unimaginative, unlocking stuff doesn't feel has rewarding and the graphics/colour of the game are somewhat dull. The guns are more balanced also, I guess. Using a TAR with silencer and Stopping Power on MW2 was a bit much. As much as I loved Stopping Power, it's probably best done away with.

One of the best aspects of CoD for me now is knowing there will be 4+ mates on every single night, reducing the chance of bellend team-mates...

Not been on this since way before Christmas. There is still something that just does not gel with me. I know its not the thread for it but I tried the single player with the snow hit and it was just utter shit. Gave up on it by the time the Vietnam mission kicked off. For the first time in about 9 months I stuck MW2 on last night and its shocking how better the maps look as far as textures and details. I'm not normally anal about such things but it did looks worlds apart. just a shame fuckers were bouncing around with interventions no scoping me.

Anyway, I'm gonna give BlackOps multiplayer another go.

Having not seen anything from Sandy Ravage for weeks, I watched his latest video last night

Seems he really doesn't like Black Ops:

Well I haven't played anything in about 6 weeks now because lets face it, Black Ops sucks. And no it's not because I'm "bad" at it, my stats are higher in it than both cod4 and mw2. I just find it incredibly boring and unsatisfying.

I can see where he's coming from. Although the core gameplay can be enjoyable, I'm finding it increasingly unrewarding. I'm not sure if that's down to generally weariness with Call of Duty, or whether it's specially down to Black Ops. Having played for around three and a half days there are only a handful of maps that I really like. A lot of that feeling is down to the art design rather than the maps themselves - Havana, Hanoi, Firing Range and others look very plain, where's the colour? Havana in particular is a mass of brown and grey when it could have been really vibrant.

The connections continue to be really variable. Great for a few games, really immediate and you can feel each shot connecting, and then a few games later it's a mess of three-bar connections where you unload huge numbers of bullets into people only to repeatedly die when you shouldn't. We dropped out of loads of such games last night, and almost every lobby was the same.

If Activision are going to introduce some sort of monetised model, they need decent dedicated servers on Day 1.

First Strike DLC Debut Trailer

http://www.gametrailers.com/video/first-strike-call-of/709349

Berlin Wall

The largest of the new maps prominently features its namesake, bisecting the map (there's a hole players can cross through) and essentially pitting East vs. West. There are plenty of tall buildings offering good spots for snipers. The most promising feature is an area called "No Man's Land." This big open space offers a shortcut, but provides no cover and is guarded by automated turrets. Pro tip: Run fast.

Discover

A large map set in the Antarctic at an abandoned German outpost from World War II. A seemingly bottomless chasm separates the map. The catch? The icy bridges that lead players over the chasm can be blown up. Yes, you have an all new use for your C4.

Kowloon

You might remember visiting here from the single-player campaign, but the area was rebuilt completely for multiplayer. Olin promises a lot of verticality in the map. To help get around, Kowloon is the first and only map to offer ziplines. You'll get down to lower areas quickly, but you're completely exposed on the zipline. You know there will be campers waiting to pick off anyone who takes the risk -- so be smart about using these.

Stadium

The smallest map in First Strike, Stadium is still going to be bigger than something like Nuketown. Even though it's mid-sized compared to the full Black Ops offering, there's not a lot of open space. Sorry snipers! Stadium is for close-quarters combat. Olin advises players equip motion sensors or tactical insertion in any objective-based modes.

Zombies Mode Map - Ascension

Set in an "abandoned Soviet cosmodrome," Ascension features the regular cast of Zombies players (Takeo, Nikoli, Dempsey, and Rictoffen). But it does include new enemies, including Space Monkeys who steal perks. Uh.... what? New weapons include the Gersch Device or "Black Hole Bomb" and Matryoshka Dolls. Those damned dirty monkeys will be swiping new perks that include Stamin-Up and PhD Flopper, the benefits of which we're not quite sure.

:)
