Parks and Recreation

Glad I stuck with this after literally the entire civilised world recommended it, but good grief that first series is so bad I can’t believe they even bothered to broadcast it. The rest of it is so lovely though I feel such an idiot for not persevering sooner. Not a unique observation I’m sure.

It’s probably my second favourite show of all time, having recently been beaten out by The Office US, which the wife and I have watched over the past year or so.

Anyone got any recommendations for anything in a vaguely similar vein as these two shows? Have also watched all of 30 Rock.

Have you watched Schitt’s Creek? Different premise, but has an outstanding ensemble cast, and as the (originally deliciously vile) main characters begin to grow, and learn how to be kind and caring, it develops the same kind of warmth and affection I get when I watch P&R.

We watched it all last year and along with another run-through of Detectorists and Mortimer & Whitehouse, kept my humanity quota topped up during a very tough time.

Obviously Detectorists is a very different thing - very English, but a wonderful show. A love letter to the British countryside, friendship, and the simple pleasures of gentle pastimes. Amusingly sweary in places too.

But again, the central performances are just great, and the broader ensemble cast are hilarious. Just a brilliant show.

The final episode is about as perfect a television finale as I can think of.

If you haven’t already seen it Harry, Superstore on Netflix is in a similar vein to Parks & Rec.

I saw that the other day, but my wife said she'd watched a season of it and it wasn't much good! Does it get better, or is she just wrong? Her taste in TV is horrendous, so I can see it being the latter.

Similar to P & R, it takes a little while to find its feet, but by early S2 it’s a great show. It’s not quite a docu-comedy like The Office and P & R, but the humour will be very familiar to you.

Modern Family is good as well, we're about 5 seasons in and it's holding up. Most of it is on Netflix.

Edit - it's not in the same tier of comedy as Schitts Creek or Parks, but it is consistently entertaining.

My wife and I have started this recently. Last night we saw the season two episode where Ron Swanson gets a hernia. When he attempted to eat his burger I was in fits of laughter, tears rolling down my face. I'm still chuckling about it now, it may well be one of the funniest moments I've ever seen and I don't even think the show was trying very hard to be funny.

Yes! This was the exact moment I knew I was going to adore Parks and Recreation. So, so good.

Superstore is wonderful! Turns out my wife was skipping through it, as she is wont to do. Turns out if you skip through a comedy, you miss all the good bits, confirming that she is a terrible person and has the worst taste in television of anyone I've ever met.
