The current available files are crap, no matter their size. It's released properly on Thursday. Should see some quality rips at that point. I have a feeling this is a film that requires some decent quality.

Saw it last night at an unlimited screening and thought it was utterly brilliant.  A proper audio-visual feast that deserves to be viewed at the cinema on the largest screen you can.

 

Thought they nailed the Star Wars / Aliens esque 'lived in' sci-fi feel.  It largely felt like a real place that made sense, made with real care and craft.

 

Probably the greatest use of slow-mo this side of Zack Snyder's Justice League, but overall a beautifully made film.

 

I'm coming at this as someone who's never read the books, but did see the Lynch film a few weeks ago.  It's remarkable that this movie tells half the story in a much longer running time, yet leaves out a fair amount of content that was covered in the first half of Lynch's version.

 

Also think it's crazy that it's out, but the second half isn't even scheduled for a shoot yet.  It's such an incomplete story, ending where it does, that they really should have 'lord of the rings'd' it and filmed parts 1 & 2 at the same time.  I bet it's at least 3 years if not longer before we get part 2.

My wife made it to five minutes before the end before retiring to the foyer. She didn’t miss much.

No emperor, no Irulan, Feyd etc. Mentats weren’t explained, the guild and its navigators got a cursory mention. Too many slo/mo lacklustre dream/vision sequences.

Obvs held back for part 2. But conversely Dune felt like a real place with heat and dust and the tech was well realised except for the harvester lifter that looked a bit Gerry Anderson in a few shots. 

 

 

I agree with your point - this is *very* much only half of the film - but what an amazing job they did of that half of the story.

I’m a huge fan of the book (probably read it at least 30 times in the last 30+years) and I think it’s both very faithful to the books (maybe even too much) and with a vision.

 

The cast is great, the screenplay is good without too much exposition and the scenery is magnificent.

 

If you liked BR2049, you’ll like it. 

 

Oh damn. I didn't like BR2049. But I did like Arrival. Going on Saturday, so we'll see I guess.

Didn’t see Arrival - and frankly I think you can like D’une and not BR2049. I just happen to like both (while being very doubtful before…).

I fucking love Arrival and don't think BR2049 is all that. I really enjoyed this film and can't wait to see part 2. :)

I thought this was a typical Villeneuve film, long, slow, plodding, gorgeous, tense, humanist. Or some such.  Really liked it. Not sure I loved it.  I certainly loved many bits of it. 

 

It real is more in the spirit of the novel than the other two efforts.  

 

Part 2 please! And Messiah and Children too.

Just got out.

 

I haven’t read the books or seen the Lynch movie - I had picked up on stuff like the war for spice, the sand worms, the notion of various houses, but that was about it.

 

Really enjoyed it.  It helps that I’m a big Villeneuve fan.  It’s not perfect, but the good bits outweigh the bits to be considered, by far.  The whole thing is dripping in atmosphere and world building that just hoovers you in, and it doesn’t treat the viewer like an idiot.

I got massive Final Fantasy XV vibes from the story! (yes I know what came first)

To some earlier feedback I saw in the thread, yeah the story def has a young adult feel to it, though it’s told in a good way that gets adults too.  Watching this it’s clear where so many films and games got some inspiration.

 

So yeah, massively recommended and probably my movie of the year - I can’t see anything topping it really.

I’m genuinely confused by what I just watched. I read the book as a kid and saw the Lynch movie, but there’s still no story.

 

It looked pretty and the sound design was excellent, great to feel the seat vibrate in the cinema again. But what a load of wank.

Just so folk know where I’m coming from, I’m someone who’s seen the Lynch version probably half a dozen or so times and loved it enough to seek out fan edits of more complete versions which in turn was what finally pushed me into reading and adoring the book. 

 

To sum it up in a sentence, I don’t think the story is very well suited for an action forward approach. Imagine the sci-fi version of game of thrones writ large on an imax screen, but where there might have been scenes of careful political manoeuvring, cloak and dagger palace intrigue and perhaps a few plain old quiet moments of thoughtful introspection, in its place is now the all mighty and near overwhelming pomp and bombast of a modern blockbusters expectations. Perhaps this was always going to be the case, it being a movie as expensive and as risky but this was an exhausting movie to sit through. It felt like it hardly ever let up in its pace, just to give me a moment to breathe or to simply enjoy and get properly invested in what ever was going on at any one time. As soon as one story beat had started it’s over and we’re on to the next thing and it got to the point where I honesty started to get quite bored about half way through. By jamming more of the book into its running time than ever before, I felt it’s eyes were too big for its stomach because it ultimately lacked what it needed for these moments to feel anyway significant to the developing story. It’s a failing of the screenplay ultimately because as much as the movie is beautiful, both visually and audibly engrossing, the plotting is very much from the school of “and then, and then, and then” way of story telling. Sitting there watching characters I’ve known and loved in multiple iterations from both the book and the previous 1984 movie, whose motivations, inner thoughts, fears and desires are now all either removed or heavily cut down and mentioned in a brief moment before all hell breaks loose again, it was hugely disappointing.

 

Id say also that as the depth of all the characters are reduced down to make way for the action to take centre stage, despite how much death, havoc and destruction is brought down on everyone the whole experience still felt anaemic to me. It also wasn’t helped that the main cast (minus Jason Mamoa - who felt like he was in a different movie) were all wet blankets. The actor who plays Paul is mostly just there in his scenes. There is very little for him to do here, mostly a passive observer to the movies great juggernaut of machinery to find time to act like a human and emote a little. Say what you want about the lynch movie but he really nailed the brief and touching moments of humanity in his characters. Paul greats his friends with a warmth and humanity that feels completely natural and charismatic. The scene where Thurfir Hawat, the Atreides master of spies meets Paul before they leave for Arakis there is palpable warmth to their interaction, they share friendly banter and while the main reason they need to talk is a serious one, it never escapes your attention that these two characters see one another as their close and dear friend. I really missed this closeness of characters in this movie which I think was the movies main reason why it failed for me. They were nearly entirely lacking in personality. Also no offence to Stephen McKinley but he’s no Freddie Jones. 
 

I also couldn’t shake the fact that the soundtrack got pretty generic as the movie marched relentlessly on and while it sounded better in the movie than in the trailers it’s used in, the all too familiar ethnic moans and yells felt like they were on a loop for most of it, it just rubbed me the wrong way.

I think this is Villeneuves weakest film to date and while I’ve not seen Incendies yet it would have to do a hell of a lot of things wrong to outshine this for the top position.

I love Dune, the book, and I'm nervous about this tbh. The clothing design is very different to what I've always imagined.

 

And the soundtrack is just obvious. Zimmer at his literal, dull self. Forgettable, forgettable, forgettable.

 

Fuck me, imagine what Johansson would have done with it. What a tragedy. Such a shame Villeneuve never linked up with Hildur Guðnadóttir - it would be nice to have a unique soundtrack for Dune.

I loved this. It was my first cinema trip since the pandemic began, so I treated myself to an IMAX viewing. The time flew by, and honestly I think I would have happily sat through part 2 there and then if I could.

 

It does feel like a longer movie chopped in half though, which I suppose was inevitable.

I thought this was drab looking. What I feared from the trailers, came to pass. Arrakis didn’t look hot enough.

 

I was kind of bored by the end of it. Charlotte Rampling showed all these big name actors how it’s done. She tore up the screen even with her face well hidden. I like a lot of Villeneuve movies but his detached directing style just didn’t work for me here.

 

Disappointed.

I feel exactly the same.  The film took a little while to absorb me but when it did I was fully invested and ready to sit there for another 2+ hours, no problem at all.  Was in my element.
