Dune - Denis Villeneuve to direct!

I reread Dune recently in preparation for seeing this - that latest trailer is pretty decent. I'm trying to think of where would be an obvious stopping point for  a 2 part movie and can't think of one other than meeting a certain character for the 1st time and that happens reasonably early.

The green knight being cancelled is a bummer , that looked awesome.

So, has only half of this been shot or is it all made but divided in two?

If the former then I'd be a little worried...

They've only shot the first film, and a sequel covering the second half of the book has not yet been confirmed.

Scott Mendelson (@Goose :bye:) wrote this just before the new trailer came out, being sceptical of how well the movie will do:

But in terms of the footage we saw, it’s the very definition of “good news, bad news.” Even with IMAX-formatted footage, much of what we saw consisted of almost oppressively tight close-ups amid periodic expansive wide shots. We saw the first several minutes of the film as well as a key first-act action sequence, and the footage played as narratively obtuse as the infamous source material. And that second trailer, mostly culled from the first ten minutes, was oddly less narratively coherent than the initial teaser. More so than the first teaser, the second trailer (which will get an IMAX sneak peak tonight before debuting online tomorrow), seems to be selling the mere idea of “Hey look, we made a mega-budget, all-star Dune movie!” as its primary hook.

I was amused to hear Jason Momoa arguing “You’re gonna have a good time!” because he’s the only actor in the trailer seemingly enjoying himself. He’s loose and energetic, while seemingly cutting loose in his action beats. I was reminded of True Detective season two which went off the rails partially because everyone talked like Matthew McConaughey’s cryptically poignant Rusty Cohle from season one. Likewise, George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels featured a majority of characters who all talked like Alec Guinness’ Obi-Wan Kenobi from A New Hope. If all of the Mystery Men sounded like Wes Studi’s Sphinx, it wouldn’t have been quite as funny. If Momoa turns out to be the one offering relatable gee-whiz energy amidst a cast of “very serious drama” performers, then he’ll be the MVP in a walk.

Oh man, thanks. The sequel is not greenlit? Christ.

What is even the point?

Villeneuve's said it's a complete film, rather than half a story.  Suppose there are potentially ways you can play

Spoiler

Paul and Jessica being accepted into the Freman, Paul getting to meet his dream girl and discovering what the Freman are really like

As a satisfactory conclusion.

But the whole novel revolves around

Spoiler

The eventual coming of the Kwisatz Haderach and everything plays out to a specific point of Fremen revolution. I'm not sure how you can make part of it "complete" without changing the story fundamentally.

Also, no matter how tempted, do NOT watch any of Blade Runner: Black Lotus.

Impossible to believe how bad it is, how little they understood, and really shows how well Vielleneuve did.

Seriously, I cannot take the shitery from your brain. Do not watch the trailer.

If they can't make the second part they could just take a leaf out of Bakshi's book: just stick a voice-over in there saying the good guys won in the end.

Did they? 😉

If they pull in material from the other books that VO is going to be amazing.

Spoiler

Then Pauls son, Leto, gets killed.

And then there's a jihad where trillions of people die due to Paul.

And then Paul dies, but then he's not dead, but then he dies.

And then his son, Leto, turns into a giant worm.  Not that son Leto, his other son, Leto.

And then Leto dies. Success!

And then their are sexy ladies. With cats!

One tries to have sex with a 10 yr old, so he'll remember he's the bestest soldier. He's very fast. He helps save the other sexy ladies who are just a bit more demure then the sexy cat ones.

Two old people natter and garden a bit.

~ fin ~

Villeneuve's said in an interview that part 2 (if it happens) will have Zendaya as the protagonist.

That's an interesting perspective to view

Spoiler

Paul's rise to messiah and his clinging to his humanity/love.  It's certainly suggest that without his love for Chani, he'd have made the same choice as Leto II.

Villeneuve's been moaning about the TV release meaning people not going to see it in the cinema apparently. Well, quite apart from the deadly virus everywhere you might have heard of, maybe put out a film that isn't half a story mate.

It's not like he's ignoring the pandemic in interviews. His complaint continues to be with WB's day one streaming strategy.

You can't do Dune justice in a 2.5hr film.  I'd happy take a decent first half over a crammed 'complete' version. Hopefully it'll be good and it won't come to that.

I'm not sure I agree with this. Two and a half hours is plenty for one book.

You could pick out one story/perspective from Dune and squish it into a single movie. Invariably that end up as Paul's story.  Could you do that and avoid it being white savour space Jesus the movie? (Which would hugely miss the point)
