With regards to removing samples from songs, the removal of the Nite and day sample from Climax by Slum Village - one of my favourite songs of all-time, constantly pisses me off whenever I listen to it.

Weirdly I just listened to the instrumental version of Climax and the Nite and day sample is still there, now I am just confused.

I think most of the De La wrangling was more about them not signing off anything going to streaming as they had such a raw deal and wanted their publishing, which they now own.

So, De La finally gets on streaming platforms (March) after much wrangling around sample issues, and to kick off created an official video to '3'.

One slightly concerning thing (that hopefully doesn’t pan out) is my sample nerd senses noticed that the 'Eddie Murphy' “Anybody in the audience ever get hit by a car?” sample has been removed from the track.

Are we in for a shock when these albums drop in March? I've had other childhood fav albums gimped through removing samples on a few occasions, annoyingly sending me back to YouTube for the 'proper' versions (Young MC, Geto Boys to name a few).

anyway, great vid…

I don't know if it's just me but I think there's a few changes from 2:20 onwards, where it goes into a load of different scratches and samples.

The first one is at 2:22 where someone shouts "yo what's up" which sounds like a different sample. Even the "do the shing a ling" sample sounds off but that could just be how it's been remastered.

Hopefully it's just my brain playing tricks and it doesn't end up like the Avalanches album that got butchered due to rights issues.

Frontier Psychiatry on that version sounded totally off.

There's definitely been some sampling issues / re-clearance going on. In the past few hours they've uploaded remasters to youtube etc. and the song credits to 'Eye Know' have now been officially changed. No mention of 'Steely Dan'...

That's a real shame.

The album is a stone cold classic and if it's been changed due to $$$$$ wranglings it just feels against the spirit of everything it stood for at the time.

I guess there's not a lot De La Soul can do about it. They either release it 98% complete, earn a living and let a new audience have easy access to it or leave it in the archive and get nothing.

I wonder if the physical rereleases will be changed? Surely the publishing rights for the samples on those were sorted out way back when.

Not everything was cleared back in the day (if at all).  Famously the 'Turtles' sample used (on "Transmitting live from mars") kicked off the debate when they sued De La. Biz Markie's lawsuit didn't help either. Once publishers smelt their was money to be had taking these 'fringe music' artists to court the game was over. Three Feet High came out just around this point (89) as things were kicking off, so I suspect hundreds of those little fragments they used just weren't cleared. As I've said before, there's a few albums I've heard on streaming that have been 'cleansed' of troublesome samples - totally to their detriment.

But yeah - physical media. Interesting one. No idea on that as statute of limitations would likely prevent them being able to sue for things that have technically existed for more than 25 years. No idea if a 'remaster' would constitute a 'new release'.

Eye Know sounds like the original Steely Dan sample to me.

To clarify, it's not been 'changed' (i.e. Steely Dan sample) - but there's deffo had to be negotiations going on around clearance of samples (which, lord knows how much would cost today), hence why they've had to put Otis as a writer (so his estate will get new royalties?). I seem to recall De La giving Steely Dan their gold record at the time, so I'm guessing that particular sample was cleared up to the wazoo.

We'll find out when the album finally drops, but they did remove the Eddie Murphy one from Magic Number which gives me pause.

Awful news, Dave/Trugoy from De La Soul has passed away. I had the pleasure of meeting him once and was lucky enough to have a lengthy conversation with him about so many aspects of their music and hip-hop in general, getting insights into working with Prince Paul, J Dilla and Ghostface (“Starks is just a total b-boy”) across various projects. I got to ask him a question I’d always wondered which was what was with the extensive Slick Rick “with your wrinkled pussy I can’t be your lover” sample infatuation throughout the De La Soul is Dead album. He cracked up laughing when I asked him about it. He was genuinely the nicest, most humble celebrity I’ve ever met. He stood and chatted for ages. Really sad news man. An icon.

Wow.

Listening to the De La Soul mix that 6Music played just as I read that. Only properly discovered them by finding a copy of Is Dead in a charity shop last year which Ive listened to more than any other album Ive bought in the last 12 months.

Came in here to see what has been said about Trugoy passing and read all the January posts of them getting close to releasing their music on streaming.

That's made me feel real sad on a Wednesday morning.☹️ RIP an absolute legend, 54 years old is no age at all.

Anyone near the Saatchi gallery could do no worse than pop down to the 'Beyond the streets' exhibition.

Well, I went. Always interesting to see T-shirts, threads and albums you owned 'not so long ago' as museum pieces behind glass.

Well worth going down.

Went to the Beyond the Streets exhibition yesterday. It’s very good but it’s also a bit “you know what people like? The Beastie boys!” in parts.
