GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

Real shame the Xbox 360 remaster won't ever see an official release. That was perfect aside from a couple of minor stylistic decisions (Surface with too much draw distance and without the stylised orange sky at twilight didn't feel right).

Glad people are enjoying this port though. I'm sure the "aged badly" crew will be along soon to tell us what this really needs is objective markers, regenerating health or some other abominable aspect of modern game design. ;)

This is great on the Xbox, just needed to invert Y and that’s that. Controls are great and it seems very smooth. I remember the dam so well even though it’s been well over 20 years since I last played it. There is definitely something magical about this game. I know why the bloke in Game gave me such a funny look when he recommended it and I said I didn’t need another shooty game as I already had Shadows of the Empire.

After getting my controls fixed on Switch, I can say this has been a pleasant surprise so far. No rose tinted glasses for me as I never had the original myself back in the day and only got it well after the NGC-era at which point the game looked and performed terrible.

Not an issue here apart from some awful default controls. Thank god that even Nintendo has seen the light on this and have given the option for button/stick mapping.

There's a pleasing arcade quality to the action. Fast, breezy and lots of enemies to mow down. The different animations that play are great, no 2/3 enemies react the same when attacking in groups giving every encounter a unique feel.

Levels have an almost maze-like quality to them, with lots of little nooks to explore. So far, this is great.

I'm planning an old-skool multiplayer session for the weekend and a worrying thought has crossed my mind - I have no idea if each player can invert their look independently of each other.

I will have to test this after work. I'm the only inverter of the group and I'll be damned if I'm going to play against their home advantage!

I’ve played with default controls (other than inverting) on my N64 controller as I never switched to Turok controls back in the day and it does make perfect sense with that controller, and aiming the reticle feels lovely and twitchy when you’re lining up a sniper shot. But that’s enough nostalgia now, I’ll go back to the Xbox.

Definitely not pointless! I watched this video which explains how to set up the controls in a couple of minutes.

I just did it and it makes the controls like a modern FPS, only took a minute or so to set it up. Without it is was incredibly hard to control for me.

Oh that doesn’t sound too bad then, I’ll give it a go!

I’ve been wondering about this…I was an inverter for years, then suddenly switched round (no idea how or why) and now I’ve been a normy for years…I wonder if this will make me switch back again?

My 10 year old wouldn't leave the house this morning for Breakfast club - this isn't a mis-post to the Things that F*ck you off Thread as its because I booted up the Xbox to download the game - showed him and after briefly questioning the graphics - grabbed the control off me, got sucked in and wouldn't go anywhere until he completed The Dam.

So they have a new convert.

Awesome, just as with old books, films and music it’s lovely when kids discover and enjoy a little bit of history.

I thought it had shitty level design on release if that helps

It’s the other way round surely, not inverting is a vulgar and obscene way to play it.

Pervert.

Anyway this is great. Shame it’s not 60fps but it’s smooth enough, the guns feel fantastic and the sound design is still awesome. So many happy memories.

There is a deadzone setting in the controller options on the watch.

I reduced it to zero.

This makes a world of difference - thanks for posting.

Played them both for a while. Switch is the more accurate version… thing to remember when playing that though is to use the auto aim - you barely ever need to move your head. In fact, if you do, auto aim turns off for a bit and makes it harder.  Old schools but with modern Ish controls using that video.

xbox the easiest way to play and definitely better for folks who have never put 1000 hours or so into the original.

wonderful game, great emulation

i know right, i think. i wanted to reply to zok's post with what did you fucking say because i thought it'd be funny but i know people will take it wrongly it wasn't worth the fallout. (control schemes are serious things). it doesn't matter if you're not a pilot at the controls of a plane, you're not moving a mouse on a flat screen, you're in a 3d space, up must always mean head/gun down.

My muscle memory keeps tripping me up when I hold the trigger to aim; I keep trying to use the left stick to control the crosshair. Using the left stick to aim in Goldeneye is so deeply embedded that I assume the information is entangled with the part of my brain that governs enzyme production and proprioception.
