It’s fucking better, by a lot. 4K Perfect Dark is the sole reason I want an XSX. It’s a great game but not a patch on Goldeneye. No levels are as well designed as facility or bunker 2 and some are just plain annoying, like the last level and the Air Force one check in level.

They’re all absolute master strokes in stage architecture which sprawl across various missions that could slot together and adjoin perfectly if intended. Some of my favourite levels of any game. Actions and/or methods for completing one stage will define what happens during (or how you start) another. I started listing my favourites but ended up just listing the entire game. The five highlights being dataDyne Central, Carrington Villa, G5 Building, Air Base, and the crowning glory being the entire Area 51 complex.

Fierce Poodle
He’s right, Perfect Dark is absolute nob in comparison.
donkeyk
Perfect Dark’s single player is very inconsistent. For every Area 51 which is excellent, there is a Crash Site which is….not. The last two levels especially feel particularly rushed in development. Two of the three bonus missions are great, though. PD’s multiplayer however, is far superior - endlessly customisable and has most of the best multiplayer levels from Goldeneye included. Playing with Bots was great as well, even if it absolutely tanked the framerate. If the GE remaster does happen I would like to see them add more custom functions like PD had - would be a good QOL improvement, otherwise GE multiplayer is very basic by modern standards.
dataDave
For Crash Site you need to lower the hover bike on Air Force One before it gets blown out of the sky. That huge level is much better on a hover bike. Although I do find it quite tranquil on foot; that could be down to me being a sucker for the way the N64 handled winter scenes. Are we doing some multiplayer or what? What's going on? Who's not got an Xbox and Game Pass? Will I even be able to play against XSX players with my 360? Indeed - when I talk about Perfect Dark I don’t even acknowledge the campaign, it’s just irrelevant. Combat Simulator is the beginning, and the end. I agree that multiplayer on PD was superior although we still had loads of fun with multiplayer on GE. But Combat Simulator on PD is also a single player experience. So when comparing the two, regardless of GoldenEye’s qualities, whether as a single player or multiplayer game, Perfect Dark reigns supreme. the_debaser
Solo combat simulator was a poor alternative to real multiplayer. Like playing chess against a computer rather than a human, the AI acted really odd sometimes, very alien.

Like playing chess against a computer rather than a human, the AI acted really odd sometimes, very alien. At least it exists as an alternative, wether you think it’s poor or not. I went through all of the challenges again last year and it was by far the most exhilarating fun I’ve had out of a shooter since Halo 2 (against humans). The AI isn’t bad by any stretch. Being able to assign personality as well as skill level is really novel too. This feature was universally acclaimed back in the day, and it really hasn’t lost any steam since. I’m really desperate for some co-op campaign. I’ve never done it before. I’ve done it loads on Halo (and criminally Perfect Dark Zero) but never this. 😕
ZOK
It’s also nonsensical to claim the Combat Simulator was a poor alternative to multiplayer, as the Combat Simulator was the multiplayer mode. It’s just that it was so advanced, you could also play it as a single player, either as challenges or any permutation of a match you could think of. Me and my mate Del used to play 2 v 6, we had a team uniform made from the medics. Slomo, against a variety of sims with pistols and N-bombs was my favourite. Seeing the ricochets of bullets as you capped opponents just never got old. GoldenEye multiplayer was a lot of fun, but there’s really no comparison if you played both inside out. GoldenEye for the casuals, Perfect Dark for the connoisseurs.
ZOK
Also, I completed all 30 combat challenges on the 360 version, and it was still pure magic. Level 28 remains the expert test.

Loik V credern
I think on Perfect Dark they enjoyed too much coming up with missions that added little and just slowed the game down, i never really got my shooting fix from it, i just wanted a few silos to run quickly through manically shooting enemies. Being bombarded with far too many guards to cope with are my favourite Goldeneye moments really, when you set off an alarm, Perfect Dark didn't have that. I don't think they were thinking of exciting scenarios in terms of shooting, their creativity and ambition was elsewhere. The excitement for Perfect Dark was unbelievable at the time.

G5 Building and waiting for the vault door? Air Base where you’re assaulted from sides (oo er)? dataDyne Defection’s ground floor? Those are just three. There are loads of scenarios where you’re swamped. Try playing Perfect Agent.
ZOK
It was understandable. What’s unbelievable is that the end product far exceeded what anyone could have reasonably hoped for. It outclassed every console shooter until Halo came along over a decade later, and still stands alongside it as the two most significant and evolutionary console shooters.
