GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

That's my theory too. It's been said that the Xbox 360 remaster was cancelled at the last minute because of Nintendo having second thoughts. All other involved parties were still onboard. Maybe the Xbox division had another go at convincing them, and offered to port the remaster or allow Nintendo to release the original on their online "service". Or both.

I have a pet theory that it's for two reasons; yes, NSO needs as many games as it can get. There's also another possibility; an N64 Mini. I always thought there were three reasons we haven't had one yet.

One: it takes quite a lot of computing power to emulate that thing, way more than the previous Minis had. Well, time has passed and we likely have cheap enough more powerful chips to pull that off now.

Two: the controller needs retooling - it's old and uses odd (optical) technology to do what it does. This has been done, the NSO controller has had a fairly extensive redesign from the original.

Three: currently some of the best games in the N64's library are with Microsoft as without Rare's output it's impossible to do a good representation of what the N64 was. I think this has now changed. We know Rare is coming to NSO, which shows some kind of a deal had been done. The only remaining game that they might want that was blocked was Goldeneye.

All very wishful thinking because I love the mini consoles, I'm sure, but regardless of whether I'm right or not, Goldeneye is an incredibly important game and it needs to be preserved on modern hardware. The modern acclaim that seems to get passed on to Halo is that it was the first to show FPS could be done on a console - is patent nonsense - Goldeneye did that years before, and a brief Googling session implies it outsold Combat Evolved. This is not to say Halo wasn't worthy of the hype, it was an incredible game, it just wasn't the trailblazer people make out.

Typically how long before release do achievements typically leak like this ?

It essentially means they’ve been pushed to the RETAIL sandbox, so the game is through cert. In theory it could shadow drop whenever at this point.

So it's actually going to happen at this point?

It seems to be much further along than the aborted XBLA version that was leaked. You’d have thought given the reasons why it was aborted last time (apparently Nintendo had agreed in principle so they [Rare] started work on it, only for Nintendo to change their mind before contracts were signed) that Rare/MS would not have put the time and effort in again unless they had binding contracts to actually realise a release/profit this time around. Once bitten and all that.

I also think Nintendo are now a lot more relaxed about ‘their’ IP (not strictly theirs in this case, but you know what I mean) appearing on platforms other than their own compared to 2008, given their subsequent mobile releases and other change of business practices since.

Under previous management they’d have preferred 100% of nothing (rather than a cut of the proceeds from a GE remaster for doing basically nothing) if it meant protecting their hardware platforms from dilution due to cross-platform releases. Clearly given the mobile releases et al they are now considerably more relaxed about this and will now take the free money being offered - and presumably it’ll also be appearing on Nintendo platforms.

The leak probably made them realise that there was a lot of interest in a remaster - and that a cross-platform release is simply in their interest as a pure business case. I mean, they’ve got milking their back catalogue down to a fine art so might as well accept MS’s help to continue doing so… 😉

TL;DR - I highly doubt MS/Rare would have put the time and effort in again if Nintendo weren’t already on board. At least I hope - I’ve been dying for a remaster since Perfect Dark XBLA got released.

EDIT: should’ve added most of this is purely conjecture on my part, but the logic that MS wouldn’t waste time without being certain it’d actually happen does make a release more than plausible.

  • 1 month later...

Microsoft has just bought Activision, who own some of the parties that may own part of the rights to NOLF. So it’s unlikely given the ownership of the NOLF IP is so fragmented and chaotic, but maybe Microsoft’s recent acquisitions have meant they feel they can stake a claim on owning it.

Obviously, it’s more likely to be nothing at all, as with most of these vague nerdbait tweets about unspecified megaton news stories.

Oh man that would be the best possible outcome. Sorry Goldeneye fans, but once you actually get to play NOLF you will agree. Absolutely brilliant game

I only played the PS2 version of NOLF, and I really couldn't get into it at all. I remember the aiming sensitivity feeling extremely awkward, even compared to the notoriously poor aiming of other PS2 FPSs.

The game's good reputation must come from the PC version!

I had no idea that there even was a PS2 version. Given the difference in power at that time I can only imagine how terrible it must have been

Really wish they’d just official announce this now!

*edit I see Banjo-Kazooie is coming to Switch so that probably also bodes well for this

Banjo-Kazooie came out a few weeks ago
