I found this evidence of it:

Quote

In the summer holidays of 1999, Alex and I – both 15-years-old and best friends – were still high off the success of selling 80 copies of our 150-page The Golden Files (“Crikey… Not so much a fanzine as a frighteningly comprehensive homage to GoldenEye.” – The Fanzine Farm, N64 Magazine, April 1999). Jake – our senior at 17-years-old – suggested we make a site for Perfect Dark. We needed no convincing. It is hard to believe now, but at this point Jake was the only one of us who had the internet (he kept it in the box-room of our family home).

It was 150 pages. Like a small phone book. It had everything mapped. It was incredible. Really regret selling it now. :(

In case anyone is interested: this, running on Xenia does work with Parsec. So it's easy enough to deathmatch with friends from a distance.

Could you lend a hand to some reference on getting this to work properly? Would love to organise some online GoldenEye 007 deathmatches :)

That's a really good read. Brings back a lot of fond memories of that era of the internet.

It was a good read! Me and my brother both ran websites back then, and I really do miss the purity and innocence of that era. No Youtube, no Twitter, no Facebook, no social media. Just kids hand coding HTML. My brother even bought a kids "how to" guide to program in HTML. Twelve years old and helping build the internet.  Remember web rings based around a common topic? God how I miss those simpler days. :(

Anyway, no one is asking the big question about this remake:

DOES THE TREVELYAN GRENADE TRICK STILL WORK?

You know, on Cradle, you run up to the wall of his first room, he chucks a grenade at the wall, and blows himself up dead. Then you just shoot the console and go to the ending platform.

I used to be able to do it consistently on all difficulties on original hardware.

Last night I spent 30 minutes over and over again, without success. I managed to get him to chuck the grenade, and I hear the explosion, but the smoke seems to be on the far end.

I can't tell if they made him immune to his own grenade damage, or they changed the physics of how grenades bounce.

Has anyone been able to achieve this?

Here is an ancient Geocities walkthrough describing it:

I've tried the grenade trick a couple of times last week but had no luck.

Explosions don't seem to go through walls any more, you used to be able to use a mine on the wall outside of the antenna building surface 2 to blow up the computer is inside which doesn't work anymore, I've tried with infinite ammo on.

To he workaround seems to be to shoot the window on the side and chuck the mine through.

They do with interior walls at least. For example in Control I've stuck a mine on a wall and killed the guard on the other side of it.

A shame. I had tried (and failed) with the mine on Surface 2, but just assumed I place it wrong.

Looks like I'll need a new strategy to finish Cradle on higher difficulties. It gets very bullet spongey with those uzis.

Control down on 00 Agent. Caverns is giving me a hard time though.

First time through I shot the guard in front of the radio to contact Wade with an assault rifle and the bullets went through him and blew the whole thing up. How could I have forgotten about that.

Second time through I tried to be more methodical and the guard blew himself up and the radio with it with a grenade.

Third time through I thought I'd be clever and go and destroy the drone guns and dispense with the enemies in that final path to the elevator, in advance of contacting Wade, so I didn't have to try and do it under the pressure of those RCP90 wielding Janus special forces spawning behind you. Turns out opening one of those doors is actually the trigger for those guys appearing so I got blown away anyway before I could even complete the objectives.

All good fun though. :)

Possibly not, I was watching a YT video the other day, and the host was saying that the wall clips no longer worked, as they used to manage to hop through closed doors while the frame rate dropped, something in the code tried to figure out where you would be during bous of frame drop, but now this runs at a solid 60, that's off the cards, so I wonder if your trick was somehow frame rte related, and thus now impossible?

I seem to remember on Control a much easier way to complete the protect Natalya bit was not detonating your mines to keep the glass intact and then park yourself by the stairwell and shoot the guards as they come ambling up the steps. You can then blow up the mainframe once she’s done her thing on the computer. It’s absolute mayhem any other way.

You can keep the glass intact by throwing the mines on the floor just in front of the mainframes. The explosion should take out the mainframe, but not the glass behind it.

Does anyone have a save file with everything unlocked? I can't be arsed finishing everything on 00 Agent just to unlock Egypt.

This YouTube video claims to have a full unlocked save, but the DAT file is only 512 bytes, not the 60kb of my actual save file.

Any advice?

EDIT:

Bloody hell that was convoluted. You need to install Horizon Xbox 2.9 and use that to unpack the 60kb file, take the 512b file and insert it, then resign and rehash it and then reinstall that in your save folder.

Now works.

Oh man those control room tips are giving me nightmare flashbacks of hours and hours trying to get past on 00 on one of the challenges, you'd get killed so fast and keeping Natalya alive was a miracle if you managed it (I eventually got it but it took fecking ages). Probably the hardest bit in the whole game except maybe unlocking the cheat on Dam.

Finally managed to nail this and under 9:30 for the cheat as well. :)

Cradle was easy after that. Aztec 00 Agent though is an absolute bastard. I can have a pretty good run up to the main room with the drone guns and the guys behind the crates - the drone guns are easy enough to take out but the guards often hit me with pinpoint accuracy the moment I peer out. Jaws is then a bit of a lottery, but worst of all are the seemingly randomly spawning moonraker guys who emerge after that point.

8-)

Quickly dispatched Baron Samedi after that, and unlocked the remaining cheats. It's been an absolute pleasure to play through this again. A fantastic update for a cherished game. I'm glad they didn't tinker - the visual and performance uplift was all it needed as the soundtrack is as incredible as ever and the core design still holds up remarkably well. A huge shame it wasn't ever released officially as the online scene would no doubt have been a lot of fun, but what a pleasant surprise to play it all these years later anyway.

I deleted my cheat save and reinstalled my original. Played a bit more.

I think I've reached about where I had gotten on my N64 copy, before lending it to a mate at school to finish the last few levels for me.

Some of these 00 Agent levels are a nightmare. I don't reckon I'll ever see Samedi on my own. The inability to shoot through glass windows makes Bunker 2 on 00 Agent much harder! I used to stealth sniper all the guards like that. :(

There are at least three GoldenEye-inspired fan projects being worked on at the moment, and two of them have very confusingly similar names.

The people working on the GoldenEye 25 remake (who, I think, did GoldenEye Source before that) got a cease and desist letter, and started working on a thing that's called either Spies Don't Die, S.P.I.E.S., or S.P.I.E.S Don't Die:

https://twitter.com/spiesdontdie

https://twitter.com/SpiesUpdates

Meanwhile there's a different project called Agent 64: Spies Never Die which has a Steam demo:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1574480/Agent_64_Spies_Never_Die/

Plus there's the person who recreated GE's levels in Far Cry 5:

Am I the only one disappointed that Spies Never Die has enemies all with the same face?

I'm still impressed how guards in Goldeneye all had random faces assigned from a pool of faces. It was a small thing, but helped the levels feel that little bit fresher. Compared to a game like Metal Gear Solid, where every guard wears a ski-mask.

You know, not many games seem to do that - add a tiny touch of randomisation to enemy appearance. Thinking about it, they almost all seem to go with enemies which just recycle the same uniform (MGS, Deus Ex, Half-Life, NOLF, etc.).

It really looks like it's happening. The German reclassification, followed by this, the fact that the achievements are explicitly referring to the N64 game. I'm guessing NSO gets it too.

I could see that, but there's no chance I reckon we don't see the remaster xbox one that leaked not coming to it. I don't see Nintendo just agreeing to give the MS the best version and Nintendo fans just the old N64 one.

There's 2 ways of looking at it. It'd sell NSO, it really needs headline titles. We're getting Banjo on there and it won't be the nice 4K version the Xbox has.

I hope you're right, but I'll happily take Goldeneye in whatever form it arrives, on Switch and Xbox.

That's my theory too. It's been said that the Xbox 360 remaster was cancelled at the last minute because of Nintendo having second thoughts. All other involved parties were still onboard. Maybe the Xbox division had another go at convincing them, and offered to port the remaster or allow Nintendo to release the original on their online "service". Or both.
