GoldenEye - out now on Switch & Xbox

I'm thoroughly enjoying this. I love how faithful the graphical update is, right down to Bunker 2's 'CCTV tape':

 

 

The only level that's seemed off from my 00 Agent run so far is Surface. The limited draw distance of the original gave you the feeling of being in a blizzard - it seems far too tranquil in its new guise.

 

Frigate is the best level isn't it? Love the hostage stuff, bomb defusing, planting the bug on the copter, awesome music, and the Silenced D5K is so effective.

The only minor issues I have with this are:

 

1) You can no longer destroy cameras in 1 shot if you hit them in the lens, I could be mistaken but it now always takes about 3 bullets.

2) You can't shoot through glass in doors (Bunker levels) again I'm sure you could do this, now it just leaves a bullet mark

3) Minor graphical glitch in Aztec in the body armour area where the new texture doesn't seem to be aligned with the old one.

What? Noooo!

 

Shooting a CCTV camera through the lens with a single silenced PP7 bullet is my favourite combination of sound effects in video games ever - an effect so satisfying that for a long time, my avatar here used to be a GoldenEye CCTV camera!

After some digging I've discovered my Xenia rendering problems relate to running Windows 7. DX12 isn't supported, nor is Vulkan rendering on my NVIDIA GPU.

 

Since I'm not upgrading to Win10 it looks like I now need a RGH or JTAG X360.

Win XP desktop for legacy games and DOS box (never online)

Win XP laptop for very bad things (I call it the WMD laptop it's got so many viruses)

Win 7 desktop for my high powered game rig - only connects to download for Steam and GOG

Win 7 laptop for work (mostly offline, strong firewall)

Win 10 desktop for online surfing and emails and printing (very low specs, i3)

Had a crack earlier and the Dam & Facility ran reasonably smoothly on a i5 3570k and 1070. Few jumps here and there but will need to play again (oh no!) to see if it was texture caching.

1. It looks ridiculous. Upping the texture resolution on its weird Bill and Ben marionette people doesn't help.

 

2. As the Craig Bonds have been commercially successful, they're probably not keen on promoting stuff based around previous era Bond actors, especially after the EA ones flopped hard.

 

Also it's perhaps wrong to assume that the rest of the world has the same level of nostalgic investment in either incarnation of GoldenEye (and the 007 franchise in general) as the UK.

Genuinely can't think of a single good reason why you'd run games on Windows 7 vs Windows 10.

 

Especially why you'd have a 'high powered game rig' that doesn't even support DX12.

The Bond people seem to have delusions of grandeur about the series, hence the last couple of films being made as if they’re Oscar-worthy prestige dramas rather than stories about a very strong spy who shags lots of women and blows things up with his special watch. I can see why they’d see an N64 game as being on the same sort of level as this:

At the time of buying the computer (2016), I heard a lot of reports of older OS progs not working. I emulate Dreamcast, PS2, GameCube, Wii, CDi, 3DO, etc. on this system. I did not want to risk an older legacy emulator not working. Especially when the extra grunt under the engine meant they would run pretty smoothly. Wii emulation is great for example. Also both Steam and GOG have disclaimers saying that since Win10 updates so often, they cannot guarantee all their games will always work.

 

It just seemed like I risked a lot of things suddenly not working if I went with Win10. Would that hacked branch of MAME which I use for CDi still work? Would my Russian Jaguar emulator? Would the Dreamcast emu? Would the GOG games?

 

I updated my dad's laptop and my low spec desktop to Win10, and as expected a whole raft of things just suddenly stopped working.

 

For one, I hacked the registry to disable auto-arrange within folders. Microsoft chose to remove this from Windows 7 upwards, so I was forced to reimplement it. I can't work with auto-arrange on. Inside any given folder I cluster groups of sub-folders and files based on their use.  For example the Junk folder goes lower right, the in-use files in centre, miscellaneous middle right, correspondence for this folder lower left, stuff that needs patching upper right, recently downloaded gubbins to unzip mid-left, etc. Try to imagine you're floating above a forest or a city, and specific clusters of things are in specific locations, and between them white spaces which you can float your mouse pointer between. Sometimes I need to zip, unzip, delete, or patch files 1, 4, 8, 13, 27, and 40 in a folder. Under Microsoft's new mandatory auto-arrange system, these are all lined up in rows. It's like being in a straightjacket. I can't just corral them into their own area - I need to drop them in a sub-folder, work on them, and then bring them up a folder. By disabling auto-arrange, on Windows 7, I again have that freedom of control. I read online that hacking the registry to disable auto-arrange was much harder on Win10, so again, it was just safer to stick with Win7.

This is beautifully insane, but as someone who also plays a ton of emulators and uses loads of esoteric software, I've literally never encountered any issues in Windows 10.

 

Dolphin runs significantly better under DX12, so that's Gamecube and Wii emulation hobbled in Windows 7.

 

And you're missing out on the best version of Super Mario 64 (built in DX12).

 

It'll continue to get harder to cling to Windows 7 with every passing month and every new release.

Interesting. I might be tempted to upgrade the gaming rig then. Sunset Overdrive also works better on Win10. But then again, I'll probably need to update the drivers for everything.

 

Maybe I should just buy a new gaming computer.

Yeah, I probably haven't dived as deeply into the corners of emulation as others, but my Win10 desktop handles a lot of things - Cxbx, Redream, Dolphin, PCSX2, a bunch of 16 and 32-bit machines... At most I may have to do compatibility mode tweaking sometimes, or maybe track down some old dll that I need to put somewhere, but generally it seems quite happy with what I throw at it.

@Sketch I think I can forgive you whatever OS you choose to run on the basis of this statement alone.

I've done 2 player, on my own, but the option  was there for more.

Tested on a 360, no idea on PC.

There's XLinkKai, which spoofs playing on a local multiplayer LAN via a VPN tunnel, but most games that use it tend to be pretty unplayable with even 100ms of latency, because games weren't really built to support that.

Pleasingly they got this right in Jungle - the haze is still there obscuring your long distance vision. The atmosphere and challenge of the level would have been diminished without it.
