Hey guys, let me just start by saying I fucking LOVE Nintendo, I think they're awesome. And I thought that Goldeneye was particularly awesome. What I am asking is this, was Goldeneye just so awesome because for many of us it was the first FPS? You know? Or was it more the structure, you know?

Goldeneye was what, ten, twelve pretty small levels. That sounds shit! But ti wasn't was it? I mean, I must've played the train level a billion times. But the thing about goldeneye was it had no story really, it was just a series of awesome levels.

So do you guys think, you know, perhaps you could do an awesome FPS shooter these days, you know, a small one rather than a sprawling epic. Am I saying that levels are too big? I don't think so but perhaps.

Or am I only thinking fondly of Goleneye like people do with other old games which are actually rubbish.

The Founding Fathers got it right -- rabid nostalgia has no place in the world and needs to banished, for the good of everyone.

GE wasn't my 1st FPS, but it was the first one which made me feel like I was being there. Also it was the 1st one allowing sneaky stuff, and awesome sniping (ok, MDK beat GE to it, but GE did it better).

I don't think it was that good a shooter - I'm not that big a fan of that kind of objective-based stuff - but it is one of the best film licenses I've played; everything from the music to the cutscenes and the ricocheting "peeyow!" effects... it made it so much more atmospheric than other movie tie-ins...

I haven't played a game since that's managed to capture the Goldeneye vibe. Small levels, lots of variation, gadgetry, fast moving and great gunplay.

Silo, Control Room and the Train were *amazing*.

(the tank and jungle levels were pants tho)

I had quite fond memories of Goldeneye's multiplayer, then I unfortunately played it recently, it's a pile of wank now  dunno how people ever put up with it's godawful framerate and control layout (probably because there wasn't an alternative). Singleplayer's still alright.

I spent an entire summer playing that 4P round a mate's house, we've even got a whole host of songs that are forever known as 'goldeneye' tracks cos there were normally 5 of us for one reason or another, so one had to mix while the other's played....

That level of multiplayer fun that comes from 4 people round one telly is still part of the reason I don't actually like playing with randoms over live. They're all bell-ends or take the whole thing far too seriously, I just want a laugh...

I never understood how having split screen worked in FPS as you can just look at the other players screen and know where he is?

I was never able to enjoy the game as it gave me awful motion sickness. All my mates loved it, with a couple of them completely addicted to it like no game before or since but no matter how hard I tried to play the game within ten minutes it's was run to the bog and throw up time. Most of the lads still talk of Goldeneye as one of the true classic multiplayer games, to this day I still feel like I missed out on it.

This game alone put me off playing another FPS for years for fear of motion sickness!!

It was harder than you'd think to do on the fly and lead to some intense stand offs...

Yeah, but it just becomes a sneaky tactic.

I quite miss executing a hit based on a glance at a mates screen.

Well it's a bit of a 'rule' I suppose, the same as playing in LAN if you're all in a row next to each other, you can look but it's bloody boring if you do anyway.... Tbh, you're normally quite engrossed in not getting yourself shot or getting a better gun or something to spend time looking at the other screen too much. Do you look at the other screens in Mario Kart a lot?

Then again, it depends on if you're purely playing it to "win" (nothing at all apart from bragging about the fact you're a massive cheat) or you just enjoy running about shooting your mates....

I didnt like the shitty little 4 player split screens.

Even then, there should have been the technology to link systems.

Other than that, its a great game!

Very true, I also worked in an internet cafe around that time as well and having 16 (or so) PC's linked for multiplayer Doom 2 / Duke and then Quake by the time it came along did sort of blow it away but it is amusing to be all huddled around a big TV. We managed to rob this one guy's family TV for aaaaages, which was a (pretty big at the time) 28 or 30" CRT, so it wasn't that painful to play split on it.

If I could be bothered to find the necessary tools and files (Project64k, Darkman's DInput, etc) I'd definitely have a go at trying out multiplayer GE with keyboard/mouse. I think it'd be pretty straightforward (for an emulation nut like me, anyway...maybe not for a layperson), but I'm in the middle of several other games right now, and I doubt I'd find anyone else with the patience to test it out with me.

Yeah but the levels aren't distinctive enough to really tell where anyone is half the time. My favourite level and setup was the Basement with grenades or remote mines. Bouncing a single grenade off a wall to explode in the path of someone who isn't in your line of sight, then strafing while walking backwards to fire a grenade off in your other direction made you look like a fancy twat, but it was awesome. It was like ballet.

My first FPS was Zero Tolerance, and then, Doom, I think. Hexen, Duke Nukem, Alien Trilogy, Quake, Goldeneye. I've enjoyed few FPS's since. Timesplitters was the last. I prefer tighter levels. I still love running through Silo like I'm invincible and being able to anticipate where the guards are going to be and moving and shooting in a way that made me feel really great at it. I think it was the strafing on the c buttons that made the movement so satisfying. I've never enjoyed an FPS as much as I did Goldeneye. I still play it (or would, can't get N64 to work), it's still my favourite game. I don't think modern FPS's are better. I'm playing Call of Duty World at War at the moment, and as much as I've made of just moving around in Goldeneye, moving in COD is dogged, slow and turgid. Shooting enemies also isn't as fun. I'm playing on Veteran, and they die a bit too easily. It doesn't feel like I'm shooting human beings. I miss the thud sound. I miss that interaction. Goldeneye was awesome. Thanks ramone.

Ramone, did you enjoy Perfect Dark then? It improved on Goldeneye in almost every way.

It's coming to Xbox Live this winter if you're interested.
