Xevious
This has been out for a couple of weeks now, so surprised there's no thread ... It's a 'game' for the DS. It comes with two activity monitors, which measure your steps taken each minute during the day, and then whenever you connect the monitor to the DS it downloads your data and looks at how much you've walked and when. You can hook up to four monitors to one card, and then compare records against each other. I've been using it for a week and it does help to highlight where my activity patterns vary between weekdays and weekends, and also how my working pattern in Saudi is appallingly bad for me. Which is no surprise. My girlfriend is very competitive about it as well, which means that I has a good incentive to walk to work this morning (in addition to the fact the DLR wasn't running ..) Anyone else using this?

Anyone else using this? Yep, I am. I tried to get my three-year-old son to use it as an experiment to see how much he runs about during the day, but he doesn't like having it in his pocket. Might see if I can convince him to clip it onto the outside of his jeans. But in the meantime I've been using it, and it's made me much more aware of how much (or, rather, how little) I move around, so it's got me up and about a little more than I otherwise would have been. I still think it's a bit limited for the price, though - a couple more minigame ideas might have made it feel a little better value than it is. (Mind you, I did get it for about £12 less than the RRP from Tesco, so I can't complain too much.) The 'space walk' thing is very Noby Noby Boy, isn't it? Shame it's an equally niche pastime judging by the numbers.
toythatkills
I had a go over the weekend. It's good in that it encourages you to walk to your target but ultimately I found it not enough of a game. Ended up just competing with my girlfriend over who took the most steps (she did.) We walked 2,000 steps around Ikea. It's presented really nicely. I like the bit where you're running on treadmills to illuminate the town, and it does it by time so when you've been for a walk together it looks cool. It's her game though, she's given the activity meter I was using to her mum, so I didn't experience enough of it, I guess! With more time with it it'd enable me to work out where I was going wrong more, etc. One day wasn't really enough.
scottcr
I'd like to use this to see who could go about their regular working day in the least amount of steps. I'd like to plan my most efficient lines through the office, time my toilet and tea breaks accordingly and see if I can get an all time low score. JPickford
When do you think that'll be? Around the same time Wii Fit depreciates in value? Wii Fit is a boney-fido smash hit and not (IMO) massively overpriced for a pretty solid bit of kit. I don't think this is comparable.
Rudderless
I agree that this is overpriced, though I think £30 would be about right (the pedometers themselves are rather nifty bits of kit). I think the Japanese price was just about right for Wii Fit. It does feel slightly expensive here, but I'd say it's worth it for the amount of use I've had out of it (and will do again when Plus rolls around). You're getting two activity meters in the box, which actually seem pretty complex. They can tell you how many steps you've walked in half an hour intervals, and are able to do so for a week without connection to the DS. And you're getting a game too. They're selling the activity meters for £30 each which is absurd, but the game and two meters for £40 is hardly a rip off, if you're after that kind of product. If you're not, then, by all means buy it when it's £20. In about nine years.
Rudderless
They're selling the activity meters for £30 each which is absurd Really? I thought they were £19.99 RRP. I'm sure I've seen them advertised somewhere for around £15.

I saw them in HMV for £30 so just assumed, £20 is a much more sensible RRP (though still a bit too much!)

I got it for just over £30 from Dixons duty free on my way out of the country, so that was quite pleasing. They could have added a bit more to the software package, but I don't think it's really aimed at gamers per se. I've not connected to the Internet yet with it. Maybe tonight. Danster
... I hope not! Don't have a DSi... I don't think so anyway, there certainly was nothing obvious on the front of the box if ti is. Nah pretty sure it is a normal DS title.

Capwn
You never heard of a pedometer, chief? No. I'm guessing it's like a stop watch that turns time into steps. Surely it can't be exactly correct though?

GViper
As someone mentioned iPhone apps here, I bought one yesterday. Avoid, it's not good for using all the time as this seems to be. I'll be picking this up on Payday methinks
therealjohnpeat
No. I'm guessing it's like a stop watch that turns time into steps. Surely it can't be exactly correct though? Older pedomaters used a mercury/ballbearing/interia switch or similar to detect the 'jolt' your steps make - I'm sure this uses something reassuringly more expensive to achieve the same ends... I'm not sure how it does it or what it uses (but Adam, have you seriously never heard of a pedometer - or even seen the jogging game in Wii Fit?), but it's not just counting, it's also keeping track of the time of steps and the rhythm. It seems to work pretty well, in that I can see when I walk to work, get lunch, make a cup of tea, and so on.
