Your favourite video game music

As it turns out, Shin Megami Tensi IV is just full of excellent music tracks. Game flutters between very fast tempo, angry shit like the boss music above, to some really delicious synth tunes which starts making it sound like Front Mission (of all things) while exploring some proper grimdark environments before you get jumped on and killed in one turn.

(Note: While I mainly spoiler tagged the below because of the amount of screen estate youtube videos take on here, they also might have titles which allude to the big twist that's presented about eight hours into the game. This is, however, a game from 2013 so I'm not anticipating people getting mad)

How the fuck anyone was able to generate this much dread and desolation from a single 3DS cartridge boggles the mind. No Shoji Meguro in sight, either.

This has to be the gaming OST of 2020.

Sun-soaked eighties electro-funk. Brilliant.

OMGGGGGGG that's so good.

Were the UK not such a basket case finance-addicted banana republic, some smart game company would have snapped up this guy and team in an instant and given them whatever they want.

Everytime you enter the Freelands in Hypnospace Outlaw and this starts up (a song about a guy getting ready to shave)

Spoiler

Whiskers growing at the speed of light
Put the trimmer into overdrive
Thoughts are runnin' through my mind
Just the bathroom and the night

Spray the shaving cream into my hand
Lather up, the world don't understand
Man inside the mirror now
Should I finally let him out?

I'm gonna shave
I'll put the razor on my skin
Gliding along my flesh I need
Confidence and patience

Infinite world
A galaxy of innocence
It's true, I am the Chowder Man
This is my contrition

I've got the blade and I'm ready to shave
I'm not afraid, I won't look away

5 o'clock the shadows haunt again
Melancholy darkness 'round my lips
Appetite, I'll show you how
I want your love, I need you now

A stubble crown, I am the king
Seize the moment, spread my wings
Press the metal to my face
Braver, stronger every day

I'm gonna shave
I'll place the razor on my skin
Gliding along my flesh I need
Confidence and patience

A universe
Addicted to the loneliness
It's true, I am the Chowder Man
Hear my declaration

May this sharpened edge bring me peace
The truth, freed from the arms of chaos, arrives slowly, methodically
A star in the sky, the Earth rumbles, a drone so sincere

And I'm not frightened, I just am

I've got the blade and I'm ready to shave
I'm not afraid, I won't look away

Like the thunder and flames in a lovers' embrace
I will clean the slate of the growth, shear the pain away

Chowder Man, ready to shave
Chowder Man, carry the blade
Chowder Man, break the chains
The Chowder Man, free again

Bold and strong, we shave
The journey starts on the face
Creation, love, destruction
Untie the strings of blindness

Accept my humble sacrifice
Let the embers glow
Secrets hiding underneath
Shave me, guide me back
To my home

I've got the blade and I'm ready to shave
I've got the blade and I'm ready to shave
I've got the blade and I'm ready to shave
I've got the blade and I'm ready to shave

We've got the blade and we're ready to shave
We've got the blade and we're ready to shave
We've got the blade and we're ready to shave
We've got the blade and we're ready to shave

I'm sure the music from Final Fantasy VII has appeared a few times in this thread (I probably posted it!), but I've been listening to the Piano collection and I can't get over how sophisticated some of it is. If you told me this was Ravel or Bartok I would probably believe you. Just brilliant.

Do you like video game music?

Do you like synthwave?

Well, you just might like World of Synthcraft, a new album that remixes World of Warcraft music with synth, for some reason, to mixed results.

This is a big thread so I have no idea if this has been posted or not (I did a search and it didn't seem to be), and I always liked this track from Information Society which is the intro theme from Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (eventually).

Yeah, the whole soundtrack goes far beyond the call of duty, haha. The first stage theme is considerably longer than the stage itself (everything after about 1:40 could only be heard via the sound test), and the game over music, which most people will hear for three seconds, has several mins of frantic soloing.

Even though it's a loose conversion of R-Type II, there are motifs from the original game all over the place, too. The opening notes of "Solo Sortie" are from its title screen, the boss theme is a new arrangement of the old one, and the true ending theme (heard only after beating Pro difficulty, so at least two loops) is a big medley.

I finished FFVI for the first time recently and (as I expected) there are some amazingly moody pieces. “Awakening” was always a nice tune to accompany key character moments, and the Gestahl Empire theme makes me consider the evolution towards some of VII’s distinctive tunes. :)
