I don't know if I'd be comfortable with voice acting in a Zelda game. In Ocarina and Wind Waker in particular, the sudden shift in the NPC's animation to convey the emotion of the next box was a big part of the charm. Even the sound of the text boxes filling, punctuated with occasional yelps and groans, makes me sickeningly nostalgic.

I dunno... The ending of Wind Waker, Ganon sitting at the end of the bed, the music stops. Just the barest of background and mostly silence... And just his words to read. With the ping when you click through. It has a unique atmosphere.

I don't think the games would benefit massively... And could lose of their charm. Of course, one day I'll be proven wrong.

Yeah, definitely. I'm not even sure what voice acting would add, the interactions between folk in the 3D Zelda games are conveyed as well as they could be.

Maybe they could do both. The starting world all bright and colourful with saturaday morning cartoon voice acting, then the dark world with it's howling wind, cawing birds and muted text boxes.

I'm all for mixing things up with Zelda with new things anyway, which is why I'm interested in the more combad-based direction of Skyward Sword, because I've obsessed over the series so much that Twilight Princess literally felt like I was at work, completing mudane but necessary tasks. All I want is the joy back.

Perhaps the issue I really have is that I'm an emotional wreck of a man.

This was one of my few criticisms of Twilight Princess, so I'm glad they've sorted that out. It will make hunting for chests even more satisfying.

Let's hope they give you a stonking huge wallet to go with it though.

I'd much rather have no voice acting in my Zelda thanks. The recent Kid Icarus trailer made me think twice about Nintendo putting proper voice acting in their games. :P

You got a point there, previous Nintendo experiments with voice acting (either in games or in those god awful cartoons) don't convince they'll do a good job. On the other hand I think it could improve the games a lot as long as the voice acting is done properly and fitting in with the series. If Link is a mute, it won't make sense giving him a voice. Then again, there are plenty of main characters in games that don't speak, Gordon Freeman probably the most famous of them all. I find it a bit funny though that people automatically become really defensive and assume the worst when this discussion is brought up - there are examples of great voice acting where the game is really improved by it. In fact, really duff voice acting is pretty rare these days. I find it odd to see textboxes in anything but handheld or budget/indie games these days

I find the argument that the sound of the textbox filling up and the emotional switches between the different dialogue switches a strong one actually as that would really impact the feel of the game. The counter argument could be that if there's one series that's being criticised for being formulaic, predictable and samey, it's the Zelda series. It could do with a bit of a reboot and as it's a series that has always been running at the front of pushing the technology and storytelling until Wind Waker, I'd love to see Nintendo trying the trick again instead of once again creating the same game with new scenery.

That kind of fantasy-land script is so tricky to pull off, I can read that stuff and it sounds fine in my head, but when you get it spoken aloud it can be massively cringeworthy unless the actors are really good. Which Nintendo don't have a great record with anyway. I'm happy enough for the character designs and animations to carry the load in Zelda games.

But there are more possibilities: Ico style speech would also work for me - fake language gibberish but with the emotion and character coming through in the voice, with subtitles.

oh God no... I hate that barbling in Okami... wish I could bloody switch it off.

Midna absolutely nailed this. For me she was hands down the greatest character that Nintendo have ever created. Way beyond the one dimensional fare that they normally populate their worlds with. She was quite a revelation for me.

Link should stay silent though, aside from the odd grunt obviously. I'm pretty sure of that.

How is it done in Animal Crossing? It sounds a little like the text being read, but condensed to a warble. It suits Animal Crossing. Maybe it wouldn't suit the tone of Zelda.

If Zelda had voice acting, I'd want Tony Plana in there somewhere. I think I'd still like Link to be silent though.

I now remember the last time when voice acting really pissed me off ... and it wasn't even dialogue. The yelping and moaning of Lara in the E3 footage of the new Tomb Raider game at the start of the MS conference. My dear wife, the considerate soul, had put the laptop ready on the table while we were having dinner so I could watch the conference. Then we first got a load of shooting and explosions in MW3 followed by Lara Croft's porn dub. My children were horrified, my wife was not well pleased.

sorry if old:

Oh wow that's simply wonderful.

The look, the music, the motion plus usage, the item selection, love it.

Add that video to the lovely flying above the clouds footage plus all the info we know, and I think this is going to be my favourite game of all time.

No, it's already my favourite game of all time.

I seem to remember hearing that the HUD was scaleable in terms of transparency. Anyway, you won't notice it once you're in the Zelda zone.

Vid above looks great. Some quite subtle improvements like the limited dash (which will hopefully stop me rolling everywhere), and the Wiimote stuff seems more fully integrated.

Excitement levels rising. What's the release date again?
