The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Fixed.

I think it looks crap with half the screen filled up with controller maps and there seems to be an awful lot of waggle in there too. But then, I haven't enjoyed a single big screen Zelda since Majora's Mask so what do I know.

Use whatever word you like, I don't care if it's good. This was always going to be a waggle-fest anyway. Fortunately for me the more waggle the better. But we're not going to go over that old ground again are we?

Maybe you should give this one a swerve Napoleon?

They crow barred motion control into Twilight Princess, not this. Plus the controller hud will not be there, or at least will be a setting, in the final version.

That's what I think, and I even liked what waggle stuff there was in TP anyway.

The HUD isn't as big a deal as people are making out.

Wind Waker with removed dungeons reinstated on 3DS would melt my eyes and make my trousers explode simultaneously, I'd wager.

They should have never changed the visual style after it, as it suited the universe perfectly. Everything else just seemed like pandering to people until they made pleased sounds.

Fuck 'adult' Link - It's a cartoon about elves and fairies, etc - you can still have dark elements - it just doesn't have to look duff at the same time.

Portly out of work magician Morrius gets frustrated by negs for shit thread and begins to pretend he was trolling from the outset.

What?

Wrong thread maybe?

I said there are a few questions we need answering about Skyward Sword before we can declare it BEST GAME EVER/BEST GAME ON THE WII.

You people.

Interesting anecdote:

A friend of mine is heavily into skating. You know, with a skateboard, not Torvil and Dean stuff. He's too old for it really but anyway.

They go to various skate parks and meet other "crews", as I think they are called. Anyway, he meets this young skater kid, who bounds up to him all wide-eyed and blurts out, in a torrent something like "Who are you? Where do you Skate? What sort of board is that? What music do you like? How old are you? How long have you been skating? What tricks can you do?" etc.

Later he asks some of the other skaters what he's called:

"Questions", they reply.

Yeah, I know. I was being sarcastic.

Anyway, Ive watched the trailer again, and I think there is quite a lot of gameplay on show, at least at quite a detailed level.

Things I particularly like the look of:

  • Precisely slashing the sword to spin a cog/lock in the right direction
  • The clearly fairly precise slashing in general the bit where Link slashes the shield of the big pink guy for example
  • The really fast slashing that it looks like you can do the bit where Link is seen training with some bamboo
  • Balancing on a rope using the remote. I love that sort of thing, so much better than waggling a stick like when youre trying to stay on a horse in RDR.
  • Pointer controls for aiming, obviously
  • Rotate-o-key puzzle

The trailer is obviously designed to show roughly how combat and object manipulation works, in microcosm. Theyve not shown anything of the sidequests, overworld, or plot, but I imagine they will, and that it will be AMAZE.

Keep the faith people.

Apart from the 3D functionality, arent the last two DS Zeldas exactly that? Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks feel like expansion packs to Wind Waker. Same kind of textures and effects and similarly designed Link and entourage. Lineback & co. are right out of WWs populace. Your mentor/trainer in Spirit Tracks was actually part of the crew on the pirate ship in WW afaik.

Looks like DS = Wind Waker extensions, Wii = Ocarina of Time extensions.

edit: For a second there I forgot about OOT out soon on 3DS. But hopefully the WW style will continue with unique Zelda 3DS games.

Isn't it funny...when they first showed off WW everyone went nuts. This isn't Zelda, it looks teh kiddiz etc. But it was actually a classic. People look back at it today and realise how good it actually was.

Then they show off TP and everyone went nuts. This is just an up-port from the GC, it looks teh emo, why do they never change. People look back today and realise how good it actually was. Look at the 25th anniversary thread - full of people saying how good it actually was now they've had time to reflect.

So now they show off SS (that's not the best acronym to go with Mr Nintendo) and everyone is going nuts. This is the same old thing, it looks bland, there are no new ideas....

Anyone wanna bet me that in a couple of years we'll look back and this one and all agree that actually it was pretty damn fantastic?

It's amazing how people are always prepared to throw away years and years of quality Zelda releases on the back of about 30 seconds of GDC footage.

Maybe people are growing tired of the formula espcially those that have played them all. The thing that strikes me is that Link looks like hes put on a few pounds.

I for one don't understand all the negativity. This looks like Zelda meets Zak and Wiki to me, and a game built to really exploit the Wiimote, something few Wii games, even the best ones, have actually done. I can't wait.

I meant 3D ala WW as opposed to the top-down deal of the DS titles. They have the machine that can pull that off now - I'd like to see them do it again.

Flippant photoshoppery aside I think it's looking really good. The art style is growing on me enormously. I hope the foliage and scenery can get a little bit more natural looking and less like obvious texture maps on low poly geometry but its a small concern if it plays as well as it seems to be shaping up (combat in particular!)
