The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

Which is the worst time to re-centre because it won't be in the centre, it'll be on one of the edges!

Move it back to a neutral position and now you're looking at the ceiling - whoops!

I never do it when selecting an item. Usually do it in the map screen when I see my pointer trying to escape my TV screen.

I never understood all the moaning about Skyward Sword's controls. I had no problems whatsoever using them; moreover I thought it was an excellent example of how motion controls added to the gaming experience. After OoT and MM this is by far the best Zelda game to date (disclaimer: author hasn't played LbW yet.). IMO.

The game does it automatically when selecting an item. That's the problem.

There's been a few times when selecting an item and Link is aiming at the ground or the Beetle keeps turning to one side even if I'm pointing my Wiimote straight. Pausing and adjusting the cursor seems to fix it for me. I haven't got the best set up for using motion controls as the sensor bar is close to where I'm sitting but it's what I have to make do with.

It does! You don't need to keep re calibrating. It's just your brain telling you because you are so used to having to point the remote at the screen in non motion plus games.

It's not my brain telling me that, it's my wrists. Pointing off to the side is uncomfortable. Our hands have a natural resting position even if it's not toward the sensor, and being off to one side just isn't a practical or comfortable way to play.

Hmm, so I'm replaying this again after giving up a ways into it at release, after I found it getting increasingly padded and tedious. I thought I'd give it another shot, I'm the forgiving type. Anyway, if you'd told me that the content immediately after I gave up first time around was an awful flying bit, a terrible forced stealth/losing all your equipment section and then having to fight the same annoying shitty boss two more times in the same sitting I wouldn't have believed you

Wow. There's a great 15 hour game here, crumpled under 20 hours of mandatory horrid padding. I've no idea if any of the sidequests are any good, which side of the fence do they fall on?

I'm pinning all my hopes for Zelda Wii U on the latest 3DS outing, which was great.

The screaming 10s given to Skyward Sword are simply wrong from my perspective. The game sabotages itself with troughs of poor content between ever-slimmer nuggets of excellence as it progresses. It attempts many multiple things and fails to deliver on a high percentage of them. No matter how great the highs, I could never attach a perfect score to a game which stumbles so often.

Have to agree far too much padding in here. That boss you mention? You have to fight yet again near the end of the adventure. And yes the flying bits completely spoilt it for me. Had a quick attempt to continue playing from I left off a few years ago. After 45mins getting frustrated at the same part was actually thinking life is too short and turned it off. I wouldn't mind if it was my lack of skill but you are fighting with a (IMHO) woefully bad control mechanism to do very precise movements demanded by the game.

They're good but surrounded by tedious find three things which makes up one of three things which makes up one of three things style tedium.

A complaint often levelled at the game, along with revisiting areas, but the truth is that it's varied throughout. There's loads to do and see.

And they weren't as accurate as using a controller with buttons.

The controller does have buttons, and the they were accurate.

They don't like the controls because they play it like their nan trying to change channels on the telly.

LOL. Well personally found them incredibly frustrating to the point of me quitting the game as I was having no fun at all with it. Just found them far to vague and more luck than skill at times. Like I say if it's something I can do then fine but when the controls are working against you.... Anyhow it's looking like this will remain forever uncompleted. Sigh. Hate giving up on things especially when I've put lots of time into it and mostly enjoyed it this far.....

Of course other people maybe more tolerant of the controls....

It's clear a lot of people struggled with the controls, not only fighting physically with/against them, but in denial of the whole waggle thing. I bought into it and loved it. The controls made it for me. Luckily for everyone else waggle is dead. And whilst a bit of me laments there will never again be a Zelda with such experimental controls, I'm happy for it to be more enjoyable for everyone without. It's Christmas. Goodwill to all!
