I thought Shigsy said this zelda would be totally different. I was expecting Link to look like an plate of chips or something but no, this just looks like it's going to be another similar game. Yes, I can tell this from this one image.

Yup it's The Master Sword.

I wonder what the benefits of that are going to be? Maybe she fights along side you as a partner this time.

Maybe there'll be online co-op, with the game being a totally frustrating mess without another player by your side? :(

God, I hope not. And I doubt we'll see an online version of Zelda this gen.

I wonder if the title will just be 'The Legend of Zelda', a reboot of sorts.

They're all reboots, aren't they???

I reckon it'll be like the game before it, and the one before that, and of course, the one before that.

He'll be like Shin from fist of the North Star, able to cut people up with his fingertips and you'll have to draw symbols and stuff in the air to cast magic.... you'll be able to fly the boomerang from a first person perspective on the boomerang like, all of it using Motion+

Hopefully they'll bring back the Ocarina and all the music type stuff.

Naysayers take a hike. One teaser pic in and I think you've already got to applaud the originality on show here. I mean, if we're right about the living sword thing (and I'm certainly convinced) then right from the word go you've got a potential twist that nobody else has ever thought of before, and no Zelda fan saw coming.

No one sees Link's living sword coming.

So they're not using the windwaker art style?

Pre-order cancelled!

Aye, its been demoted to DS duties indefinately it seems. A shame as I was naively hoping they would return to it and make it even richer on the Wii.

I'll wait for more news and hope that isnt a second co-op character mechanic they're moving towards. It used to be the cherry on top and not the main thrust of what should be a single player campaign.

I love the fact that we're speculating about the game based on a painting. It reminds me of when we were all trying to work out what the Ico sequel would be like based on the Team Ico recruitment advert.

I reckon next time Miyamoto should impart clues through interpretative dance, or cookery.

With Motionplus there will be more emphasis on sword play so it makes sense to actually have the sword as a seperate character. Think about the possibilities there... moving Link around with the nuncuk whilst independently and accurately moving the sword around with the remote. The sword could also be used to draw symbols with which to pretect Link, cast magic, solve puzzles etc. a la Okami. And of course using the remote speaker the sword could talk to you, offering you advice and so on (like Navi).

It's gonna rock.

I think it's going to take a darker tone.

Link is going to be a Hyrule social worker, and he's assigned to this case of a girl called Zelda. Her step father, Ganon, is beating her, and forcing her to muck out the horses while wearing a panda suit.

In a tragic twist Zelda is paralyzed after Ganon pushes her down a flight of stairs.

Link knows what happens, but now wheelchair-bound Zelda will only say "I fell".

Link's only recourse is to try and become pally with Ganon - he starts drinking at his local in, and shows off with some dart skills while they're both roaring drunk. Ganon is impressed.

Thing is, Link needs to get closer.

Ganon invites link out on a hunt, a favourite pastime of his. With a bunch of henchmen around him, Link realises this is no ordinary hunt. Finally he is forced to face, and butcher Tingle...only then is he part of "the gang".

The bloody carnage leaves Link changed, and he is drawn into Ganon's world, eventually turning on Zelda herself - which results in some uncomfortable scenes for players.

Driven down this path the player has a morale choice - to carry on with Ganon and his corrupt world, culminating in a violent Bank Job - or to save Zelda and help her walk again...

DO DO DO DOOOOOOOOO

The talking sword seems right to me - but I think the blue diamond is there to merge the design of the sword to the blue lighted wiimote.

I imagine the sword is a navi/guide figure who talks to you through the wiimote speaker and maybe even flashes the blue lights on the wiimote to signal danger.

The fact he has a shield does suggest a defensive role like that in Ico, and that the nunchuck motion sensor will come into play to move the shield.

The stone/lava motif pehaps signals a blacksmith, forging of the sword type narrative - perhaps even Princess Zelda herself has been trapped in this sword. The sword in the stone legend also comes to mind (except here the sword is the stone), and the story of a young king to be being the one person in the village to remove the sword from the stone.

Maybe the Arthurian legend and characters like Merlin will come to the fore. Certainly the wii mote being able to conjour spells seems too good and oppertunity to miss.

Clearly Zelda will use everything the Wii has to offer.

The Snowboard sections on the balance board will also incorporate the Microphone - shout loudly to cause Avalanches and ride the snow waves!

The Microphone will also be used in Zelda singalong games, which can also use the Wii Guitar Hero controllers!

Plus, connect up your new DSi to take a picture of your face - transfer to the Wii and stick it on wanted posters...these will be transmitted to your friends online, and they'll be able to hunt down characters with your crudely pasted face on them - in the Link: Bounty Hunter side quests.

... it could be the reason why Link has turned his back on us in that painting...

wii-sports-resort-20080715110334404_640w.jpg

If you look at the sword fighting in Wii Sports Resort - and that'll surely be a prototype combat system for a Wii Zelda - then you'll see the rationale behind the painting.

A zelda with wiimote sword fighting will necessarily reduce Links impact on the screen. He is likely to always face away from us and be largely transparent. So Miyamoto has done something brilliant - he has made the sword, the object you will now be focusing on - into a character.

The painting simply reflects the quintessential vision of the game - Link with his back to us, and being foregrounded by the personality infused sword.
