i only played Elite Beat Agents of those and that was fine. care to explain? please also describe how you would solve the problem of ensuring realtime allocation of orbs to either light or dark magic at the player's choosing, as what you mention currently doesn't address this.

Nah, I just threw in some other unrelated games that weren't combat/adventure titles. You know, like how Ikaruga's a shooter and subject to entirely different rules.

And I did mention my solution. The orbs could fill up both of them, or have different colours depending on the enemy or how you kill them. Or you could hold down block and press X for light magic and B for shadow. There's plenty of other ways, each with their pros and cons. Clicking in sticks during a battle? That's just awkward to me, and disruptive.

Ok, lets analyse that:

"The orbs could fill up both of them"

but then you are taking away the choice that the player has in deciding whether they should heal their character, or give them more attack power. This goes completely against the grain of the risk/reward mechanic at an upper level of the battle system, let alone the micro-level in how you deliver that choicemaking to the player.

"or have different colours depending on the enemy or how you kill them"

but then you are removing player choice again, this time in respect to how a player should defeat an enemy.

"Or you could hold down block and press X for light magic and B for shadow"

using the block button screws with the controls logic/usability, collecting orbs is and should be a separate command/act to blocking - ensuring the player understands that a button performs one function only in fast battle situations is key. not only that, asking the player to use two button presses to perform a function is overly complex (why not just one?).

I barely use shadow magic apart from for the necessary puzzles. I only use light magic to heal myself. If it wasn't for that and the necessity of using it for puzzles, I probably not use it at all.

That's what I've found as well. Playing it on hard, so healing's important in places... but that's about it. Shadow Magic's not really done anything particularly noticeable for me up to chapter 7 save for hurling yourself through walls and all the rest of it.

Up to Chapter eight and I've lost all interest. It's just outstayed its welcome for me now. Had it ended around here and been building toward it rather than finding x keys here and solving an arbitrary puzzle there, I wouldn't have minded. When I'm having to stop and clear out a gang of enemies if I so much as fart, it eventually becomes a chore.

Really loved it for a good while, so I'm disappointed to feel like this.

A good effort from Mecury Steam - but for a game of this kind, it's simply too long.

Ha! Back at you, you rogue. :D

eh?

you're claiming that something doesn't work. either substantiate your claim with a working solution, improve your playing skills or go whinge elsewhere.

so far i reckon that what is in place currently does the best possible job given the conditions of the light/dark system. if there's a better solution pls share

Christ. Couldn't let it lie, eh? Couldn't shake hands and be chums, eh? Couldn't accept the fact that some people might prefer to have certain aspects of the controls work differently, eh?

Okay, here's how this works. This whole argument you're so keen to continue. I say 'X' and you say 'X is bollocks, Y is clearly superior'. Ad infinitum. And everyone gets bored of reading us arguing like a couple of tossers. Also, get my arguments right - I didn't say it didn't work, I said it was awkward and could have been done better.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure the 'playing skills' argument doesn't apply to me when it comes to action games so you can take that elitist 'lol can't play vidgame' attitude you seem to be waving around and sod right off with it. This argument, such as it is, ends here.

I don't have an issue with clicking the sticks, it's just that you have to be standing still to do it that makes it awkward.

And Bunta, you must be right that I get that ability later - even though I already have acces to dark magic, I can't activate it when necessary against that boss :(

don't get angry because i'm exposing elements in your argument that need further follow up. i'm just trying to be objective here and follow up on your point.

awkward = doesn't work.

how would you make it work?

this discussion ends in your favour when you propose a workable solution.

I did the second Titan last night. Ran about for about twenty minutes trying to figure out what to do. Give up after a while, (how annoying is the girls voice) head to YouTube. WTF the boss is doing an attack on these videos it never does to me?! Oh I see once I reload my savegame it seems to work. Nice one! Other than that was quite fun :)

Yeah, annoying as she is she's telling you to get away - as in, most of the arena away. If you're in close, the boss'll never chuck the rocks you need.

I was really getting irritated with her on the previous level since there's a tough to spot whip point and she keeps rabbiting on about how you need the crystals. Bloody women, always scared you'll forget the shopping.

There is a bit in a later level where you have to block holes by pulling statues onto them. Enemies spawn out of the holes and you have to kill them before you can pull the statue and, if you take to long, more enemies spawn.

The entire time, Zobek was shouting 'WE NEED TO GET THAT STATUE CLOSER TO BLOCK THE HOLE!' over and over and over and over and over and over to the point where I muted the television.

Compounded with the fact that 90% of the time he takes so long to get in position behind the statue, Gabriel lets go of the chain before the button prompt appears. Fucking annoying, I actually thought it was a bug.

Oh and once I've ended up walking about & climbing in the sky, and had Mandragoras spawn that were invincible.

REMEMBER WE NEED THREE MORE CRYSTAL PIECES.

no wonder Gabriel stabs her while she's sleeping.

When he did all I could imagine was:

begbie4.jpg

Shouting: "Find it yaself ya fooking cunt!"

Up to level four now, brilliant fun this.

The music has been pretty cool, but I'm really holding out for some Castlevania SNES style mega tune remix at some point - it sometimes sounds like it's going to bust into one but not quite yet...

Something like...

Would get me going, like the Bionic Commando in Rearmed and even the 3D one did oddly.

Suoer Castlevania has probably the best composed soundtrack ever,

Do any of you fellow geeks know if anyones ever done a re-arrangement that's any good? Would love to hear it on proper instruments!

I've not got a "proper" version as such but tons of mp3's like this:

Saw him live the other year - mental piano skills.
