Microsoft Kinect

You mean like they did with the Live cam? That was a huge success.

The Live Camera didn't have its equivalent of a cirque de soleil show, two e3's where it took up most of the time and it's own special port on a new 360.

So, you give the example of Microsoft halving the price of the original Xbox to help it succeed, yet you don't think they'd cut the price of Kinect to help it succeed?

What i meant was the xbox looked like it was dead for some time but Microsoft kept finding ways to push it untill it succeeded. People here saying they'll wait till it is £20 obviously mean in the bargain bins and no one cares to make software for it any more.

HD-DVD, that did well too.

Well we all know that Microsoft didn't care about HD DVD and only did it to slow down blu ray, they were also more interested in streaming films.

Nothing to do with backing the wrong horse then.

As VC-1 was being used on both formats I'm sure Microsoft were really upset about getting two sets of licensing fees. While some see it as Microsoft backing the wrong horse, others see it as Microsoft's attempt to confuse the general pubic and put them off either until a digital distribution infrastructure was up and running.

No one will ever know for sure.

There's no way they released the HD-DVD add-on hoping it would fail just to confuse the market. Any fees they were due from royalties would have been more than offset by the cost of the project and its subsequent failure. Not to mention the effect it would have on the Xbox community who in invested in it also, and it's image. Confusing the market has never really been a sound plan.

And anyway, even if that was some kind of crazy plan they had going on, it didn't work.

I agree. This is one of those situations that reminds me of the saying, "Never attribute to malice that which can be easier explained by stupidity" (which is probably not the precise quote, but it's close enough).

However I see no point in this thread where anyone has suggested that Microsoft hoped it would fail so that's kind of an odd point to bring up.

Kinect is something completely different, it's clearly something Microsoft are looking as the future of interfaces for more than just gaming. Rather than a stop gap medium for films.

Instead of 'easier' it's 'adequately', it's called hanlon's razor. I don't know why i know that.

It's very true in this instance.

Brilliant Charlie Brooker piece on Kinect

The Kinect demonstration showed a man saying "Xbox, play movie" in order to make his Xbox play an HD digital copy of Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. Then he said "Xbox, pause", and the Xbox paused it. Then he said "How cool is that?" and the audience took a while to respond, because there's no polite collective noise that means: "We appreciate the ingenuity, but CHRIST you look like a dick."

So many choice quotes:

You simply stand in front of your television sweeping your arms about like an unemployed conductor having a breakdown in front of daytime television.
Kinect has ears as well as eyes. So as well as jigging around to impress in-game characters who aren't really there, you can also converse with them, thus enabling you to enjoy all the fun of a full-blown psychotic hallucination without feeling compelled to go out and stab someone afterwards.
You can talk to the tiger cub, tickle it under the chin, dance for its amusement, or hide behind the sofa and watch it whimper morosely until you jump back into view. You can do virtually anything with the cuddly not-there critter, apart from taking the only sane course of action: screaming "BEGONE, VILE WRAITH!" while stamping on its head. If you try that it'll just stare at you, blinking vacantly every 2.3 seconds as prescribed by its software, until you admit defeat and crumple weeping to the carpet – at which point it'll detect your despair and do a funny little handstand to cheer you up, and you'll catch sight of it and momentarily smile through your tears despite yourself and THUS KINECTIMAL IS THE VICTOR.
We've got buttons now. Buttons. If you want to play a movie, there's a button right there. You don't have to plead with it. Just press it. Shut up and press it.

Brooker brings the weak sauce this week. He must just be happy or something. Konnie Huq!

He's right, the casuals are not going to go and buy and Xbox + Kinect to try it and the core gamers are not intrested. How has Microsofts last charge at the casuals performed? (Reminder: Viva Pinata and Avatars)

How about core gamers who have casuals in the house?

I can see Xbox owners everywhere willing to give up their machine so that their mum/brother/sister/girlfriend etc. can dance around the living room. And besides, they've probably already got a Wii for all that, have had for some time, and it's all becoming a bit old hat.

That's the thing. Unless Kinect's going to be really cheap anyone'll just be better off getting a Wii, if they haven't already got one. Next-gen when all these wiggle sticks and Kinectickles are standard features maybe we'll see it all take off for companies other than Nintendo.

No. Remember when boyatsea told us his mum was looking forward to playing scene it at Christmas? See, xbox owners are such dispicable nerds they haven't a wii. They've been crying about waggle gaming, slagging off the likes if wiifit witout ever trying it, not because they're precious about they're own console, it's because they're precious about their console manufacturer. You've seen it already, nerds saying 'oh my girlfriend likes the look of this!'

she likes it because you won't let her get a wii like all her mates, you horrible twisted nerd. You freak, you social retard. With your headset and you spectacles. When you disgusting slobs snort when a wii ad comes on and yet you take the time to show her YouTube videos of kinect then of course she'll say kinect

looks good. But she just wants to say what you want to hear. She doesn't want you going off to haloland in a strop again you feeble minded fuvking reject.

Is this what playing on a Nintendo console does to you, Ramone?

I think it'll be interesting if Kinect doesn't fail, because we've seen every kind of excuse as to why it definitely should.

While that might be true for hardcore gamers, I'm not so sure about the casual audience to be honest. If Microsoft manages to market it to the end of the world, it'll gain some traction (especially considering how EyeToy was a silent success without much marketing in comparison).

I think the real challenge is going to explain how players are supposed to play golf or other sports titles without holding anything. It's like trying to teach multiple generations to become mime-artists.
