Microsoft Kinect

I'm really glad that this is released as a peripheral rather than being bundled with the xbox slim, I would really resent having to have the thing in my house.

Also I think the system looks very interesting and I'm glad that the technology has been developed, it could be really useful for something. Just not for games.

Bill Gates bigged it up last year when it was still Project Natal, and he indicated they were looking to use it in Office apps:

Speaking about all of the technology Microsoft has cooking in its labs, Gates said: "I'd say a cool example of that, that you'll see... in a little over a year, is this (depth) camera thing." Gates said it was not just for games, "but for media consumption as a whole, and even if they connect it up to Windows PCs for interacting in terms of meetings, and collaboration, and communication."

You're not likely to be sitting down if you're giving a presentation though, are you?

I was referring to the other people in the meetings. It could be great if it recognises people raising their hands and the like in order to conduct sweeping surveys, but not if eveyone has to stand first.

So Microsoft have confirmed that currently, it doesn't work sitting down. But they're sure it will by launch.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who likes games beyond a very casual level will be tempted to buy it (before it hits £20 a few months after launch, anyway)unless they have a lot of disposable income and a fervent desire for an unquestionably doomed yet intriguing Virtual Boy-esque device. It's anathema to the self-proclaimed 'hardcore' - a flakey equivalent to the Wii remote, with its ONLY conceivable use being for the party / mini games so roundly detested by said group and substantial software like Mario Galaxy an impossibility for the bold new world of "hands free" control - and it's too costly and far too late in the 360's life to really catch on with the oft-sneered at 'casuals', Microsoft's new primary focus.

First we hear of the specs being significantly scaled back, now it's facing a race against time for it to be possible to use menus while seated. They should have waited - By not doing so, they've probably killed the credibility of more developed tech of this ilk for next time around, too.

Define 'properly', that Star Wars game they showed at E3 looked like something from the era of Mad Dog McCree.

Doesn't matter. The guy was holding up his own hands and fending off Vader in a lightsaber battle. The Wii remote was PERFECT for this and we've had nothing, bunch of arse.

No, it wasn't, because it couldn't track in 3D space when not pointing directly at the sensor bar.

Motionplus might be, but even then it loses sync far too often.

I've been shitting on Kinect a lot recently so it's only fair that I post more (potentially) bad news about it.

That bastion of embarrassing fanboy nerdism, Neogaf, has a thread about how only 2 players are supported by Kinect at any one time - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=398914

This is really odd, if true, especially as that fake target video last year had oh-so PC families of 4 playing other families of 4 at a quiz game over Live (yeah right). And they were sitting down.

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/ma...e-96337804.html

Players can also grow that party at home with up to four players on Wii™ and PlayStation Move, and up to two players on Kinect for Xbox 360.

Fuck's sake, I was really looking forward to playing this with my three fat brothers. :)

Are you going to want several people jumping around your living room?

It does mention that it can recognise a room full of people, just not do he expensive calculation for all of them at one time. most games could easily switch who has full tracking on a whim.

How many 360 games are more than two players these days anyway? I'm still annoyed they cut back from 4 on project gothem

Everyone saying they'll pick this up when it's £20 in a few months is deluded. Microsoft are not Nintendo, if it isn't a success they'll keep pouring money into it until it is a success or they kill it off years down the line. Remember Web TV? What about Windows Mobile and even the original xbox looked like a faliure when they droped the price by half and added free games within a year. Microsoft are going to be pushing this heavily for a long time to come.

You mean like they did with the Live cam? That was a huge success.

So, you give the example of Microsoft halving the price of the original Xbox to help it succeed, yet you don't think they'd cut the price of Kinect to help it succeed?
