Microsoft Kinect

When I see this Forza 3 Kinect video I can only laugh. It is blatantly a gimmick, something to make the people go 'oohh, see!! not only kiddie sports games!'

The Forza 3 Kinect video only shows steering. What I want to know, how do I accelerate and break? Lean forward and backwards? How do I look behind me so I can scout for opponents? What about the handbreak? How do I navigate menus?

If anyone's interested, I'm selling some fine cardboard standup legs that you can position in front of you whilst playing Kinetic sat down.

Only £299 a pair, made from the finest components!

Availabe in 3 magical varieties: Jeff Goldblum, Goldie Hawn and Will Smith! Other varieties will become available once they release more of those stand-up figues used to advertise movies.

Seriously though, it doesn't matter that this thing is an internal tech experiment that went a bit too far and doesn't work, it's all about the games...

See, there's a dancing game, a sports game, a sports game, a sports game, a fitness game, a dancing game, a sports game, a fitness game, a fitness game, a dancing game, a sports game, a pedophile tiger attack game, a dancing game, a sports game, a sports game and a sports game.

And Sonic.

And a driving game that was supposed to be free last year.

With all that dancing, aerobics and bowling I'm not going to have time to sit down!

This is like the Iraq war of console peripherals.

Every aspect of it is doomed to fail, every gamer on the ground can see it will fail, 3rd party enthusiasm is bone dry, yet somehow the generals at Redmond push on.

...And the world wept as they could not play Kinectimals while sitting down.

I have always had to drive my car sitting down. Now, thanks to Forza 4 and Kinect, finally - FINALLY - I can realise my number one ambition in life and drive standing up.

:)

Update from IGN...

There has been some confusion about whether or not you can sit while using Kinect, Microsoft's upcoming motion controller. We've seen many, many demos of the device in action here at E3 and used it ourselves, but we've yet to see it used by a sitting person. Early in the week IGN was told by Microsoft that you can play some Kinect games sitting down, but then we've heard the opposite from some developers. We posted an article expressing our concerns about not being able to relax while using Kinect.

In response to that article, Microsoft representatives reached out to IGN to clarify, saying we definitely will be able to sit while using Kinect. Representatives said they want to provide a comfortable, enjoyable experience for users and understand that people don't want to watch a movie standing up.

That's good to hear, but since we've only been able to use Kinect standing up so far it looks like Microsoft is still working on making it usable in the sitting position.

If Microsoft want to debunk it all they have to do is get a couch then grab someone from IGN or Gamespot or whatever and go 'Here, knock yourselves out!'. Hell, all the journos are in one place this week, so its even easier than usual. The fact they're not speaks volumes.

The sitting-down 'debacle' just makes me think of these fat fucks trying to play Wii Sports in a perfectly immobile position.

The only excuse you should have is if your legs have actually succumbed to necrotising fasciitis.

You know, I've never actually sat down to play a Wii game, either. Only thing that seems outlandish is the price, but as someone else said, factor in all the peripherals 4 players need for Wii and Move and it doesn't seem so bad.

Also, isn't there a cheaper one with no motors? Or did I imagine that?

STILL says nothing about playing a game. I was under the impression part of the point of Kinect was that you could integrate it into regular games - leaning in an FPS, or something like that but less stupid (can't think of one off hand, though). Rather than just wii sports rip offs and minigame packs. No one is going to stand for a 3 hour multiplayer session of an FPS just to use some gimmicky extra controls.

This whole thing isn't looking very promising right now, but I guess they might pull out some amazing uses for it.

That's only a rumour just now. The only thing they've announced is the release date. The rest of the info is coming at gamescon.

Did you stand up all the way through Metroid Trilogy?

Anyway, MS could sell harness that you fix to joists that keep you in a standing position. Problem solved.

One thing that gets me is that all they say is that you don't need to "watch" a movie standing up. You can pause etc using voice control... But all that moving arms around to manipulate the movie using the force? What about that...

Alternatively... Just gimme a remote.

They should introduce a small sticky dot that you can put onto the end of the xbox remote and turn that into a pointer. Problem solved.

From a business point of view it is bad because I'd guess most of the potential audience for this (and Move) already own a Wii. What's extraordinary is that either Sony or MS needed to show a clear reason for these people to upgrade with interesting, appealing software. Neither of them managed that over E3.
