Microsoft Kinect

Head tracking to make sure the camera is focused where you want it to be- good. The rest, utterly, utterly, pointless. And notice how things are activated by being held over something until the circle fills. That will get annoying before it's even been used.

It's been annoying for years already.

Did EyeToy get wiped from the collective memory or what?

Eyetoy's problem was that 95% of the time, it wouldn't pick up where you were pointing...

If they can solve that (or just go with "put hand over icon and say go"), then the interface won't be anywhere near as annoying.

And Natal Sports could be just as good. Certainly looks a lot more varied and accurate.

Highly unlikely as there haven been countless of other Wii Sports clones just as varied on the Wii and none of them top the original.

I have very little interest in waggle/flail on any console but I thought that fitness stuff looked very impressive. I can see that and the dancing game having a lot of mass-market appeal. The fact is, there's stuff you can do with this that you can't on the other systems. If they stuck to stuff that differentiated the tech then there would probably be a lot less LOLs.

I can't believe they led with Waggle Sports or whatever that pish was, and not that Ubisoft exercise thing and the dance game which really showed what the console could do. It was really impressive but by that stage I imagine most of the audience had written off the whole project.

Thing is, however great this may look, bring in the casuals, better than Wii sports etc, the Wii arrived as console plus waggle in one at a low price, with Wii Sports thrown in. This needs needs a 360 and then the peripheral. Thats just not going to grab casuals in. Even when it's bundled together, its gonna cost more that a Wii. I just dont see how this will widen the userbase for MS. And they have just pissed off the majority of their installed base with an E3 directly completely away from them.

Not bundling it will indeed most likely be it's biggest downfall. Maybe they'll see sense by the time of release and do it that way though. Maybe a cheaper version of the new design with a smaller HDD.

A bundled Kinect version probably doesn't even need a HDD actually, assuming the S model has the 512MB of internal memory for saves that the latest Jasper models have. That would bring the whole bundle in at less than £200.

Realistically, this thing only has a future as part of a more substantial set-up. The "holding thin air to simulate steering" Forza catastrophe is the most hilarious and flaky game-control related thing I've ever seen by miles. You need some feedback, something to give you a guide to make the finer movements. I maintain that a big part of the Wii's success is because it's very simple but it's also very tactile - people are holding something and they have a button or two and they know what they're doing with it. It seems to me that having nophysical controller is going to make it harder to pick up. You're going to feel entirely disconnected. The Wii remote succeeded because it combined a fancy new way of control games with a TV remote form factor, a device with which almost everyone is familiar. Waving around thin air just doesn't have the same impact.

I think camera based tech can play a part - combined even with a simple remote and / or nunchuk style device, there are ample possibilities for it to play a peripheral role in the wider scene. As it is, it's an ill-conceived attempt to capitalise on the Wii's success but with oodles of patented Microsoft naffness. It was the same when they tried to compete with the iPod (although I hear Zune was by no means a disaster functionally, having never used one myself). It just seems stilted in comparison and as a result simply won't resonate in the same way.

Will this convert the casual waggle fans like my parents? In general, probably not. The outlay is fairly high:

1/ 360 console - £200.00

2/ Kinect - £150.00 (I don't think the UK price has been confirmed so that's a guess)

3/ Software - £20.00 a game for the Kinetic titles (that's a guess too) - 3 games = £60.00

Total £410.00 for the console, the Kinetic and some software. Add to that a live subscription for all the added features with the software (I doubt video chat will be free to silver members) and you're looking at £450.00 initial outlay.

I think, in comparison to a Wii (that's already owned by many casual wagglers), that's just too high. In addition, are my parents going to gamble on something new that will cost them around £450.00 when they've already spent close to £200.00 on a Wii? I very much doubt it. Another thing that would put my parents off is that it's not all in the box as one lump sum bundle (shops will probably bundle the whole lot) but I think all these elements are going to confuse my parents.

I've shown my ten year old daughter the videos this morning and she's already begging me to buy one - the tiger video made her eyes light up  she did comment that the avatar Kinetic games looked like Carnival Games though and she's right, they look like those third party games on the Wii that try to use Mii style graphics. No one in my house liked the Ubisoft fitness software (thankfully).

The EA Sports software for the Wii is much better than that showed at the conference IMHO.

Having said that the only thing that remotely interested me with the use of the Kinect was Harmonix Dance game which the missus liked the look of.

It seems like the majority of the installed base are going to be buying a new 'slim' so they can't be that pissed off.

Really? I'm not. Why would I replace my currently working hardware with the same machine, but smaller? I don't think people will replace machines until their old one dies

And since I posted my original message, EA seems to have picked up where 'core' gamers would have wanted, so all should be well in the world.

I think the timing is perfect for shifting new consoles - most people on here with a premium will have had them for three/four years and the bigger HD will be very tempting. In addition, anyone who wants their gaming set up to match and look pretty will not want a black Kinect and a white 360. Personally, I don't mind wearing odd socks so won't be getting one until my current 360 dies.

I predict the next system update will trigger the internal miniature bomb that microsoft put in the original 360s and cause a Worldwide meltdown of white consoles

If you're using your hands as a steering wheel, what are you using for the pedals? I'm all for fun new ways to control games but that just looks like an arseache.

Shoe-horning in "air controls" is going to be the new "waggle-to-press-button", unfortunately.

The menu interface stuff is kinda cool, particularly if it works as fluidly as that in all conditions (what happens if you're talking about Xboxes while you're watching a film and accidentally fastforward or whatever?) however I do think it's largely a solution to a problem that doesn't exist. Fumbling around for remotes? Yeah, I really struggle with that all the time.

I hope the Star Wars game turns out well. I would to try like some proper 1:1 action action.

See how it goes. Not a promising start, though.

No way on Gods earth is it going to be as much as £150.

I said it was a guess. I am expecting it to be over £100.00 with possibly some free software. I half expect it to be price comparable with a Wii in the UK for some reason so that's why I've guessed £150.00.

Do they still do the USD to GBP thing? Surely not.

Anyway, I quite like the look of this and will probably get it. Not sure about the steering fresh air thing (though I assume it still works if you held something?), but I'm looking forward to see what inventive ways they may use it. I think my daughter is much more likely to play stuff, she's not terribly keen on using the pad but seems to get on with my mother-in-law's Wii.

Love the new design, too. Unfortunately, I got a 60gig model about a year or so ago, and it doesn't show any signs of wavering at all.
