Brink

This looks really good now. I was kind of disappointed with some of the dingy industrial shots in previews a while ago, but it's actually a very pretty game. SMART also looks fairly intuitive as well - I just hope the rest of the game is polished enough to make the parkour a welcome complement to the gameplay, rather than a USP for an average shooter.

This was never going to be an average shooter. The USP for Splash Damage games has always been the objective-based shooter which noone has even come close to emulating yet. Games have tried but have never had the same interaction. The parkour, graphics, et al, is a nice addition to a game which already has a very solid base. SD have been doing this for years and seem to be catching some wind with Brink. (Much too late in my opinion)

I did think it was similar to TF2 before but shrugged it off but when I saw the spy class in the new video... kind of bizarre they are ripping a class that more or less has no team utility in TF2 and transplanting into their game.

Brink is a direct relative to W:ET which had it's Covert Ops class. Which Brink extends upon, it is not stolen from TF2, it, and all other classes, have a long lineage in SD games.

See, this confuses me. If there was one FPS out there coming up that looks to be doing something different both in gameplay and looks it would be this. What with everyone vying for the COD crown this atleast looks original in it's approach. I'm kind of glad we haven't heard too much so far, nothing worst when a game feels old before you even buy it. This seems to be the first wave of impressions and with a few of months until release I'm sure we'll start to hear more

\not sure why you think this is the first wave of impressions - certainly magazines gave it an lot of pages prior to it being delayed.

As for how it plays, think Quake Wars (from all I read).

It's kind of weird that Splash Damage's art team have done a good job to get the game a solid visual style of its own and then the marketing chaps decide to sell preorders based on entirely unrelated IP (other than Zenimax own them all).

This

I absolutely love the art direction of this game, the characters look superb and although appealing it does seem weird to license the weapons and ip of other games.

But not the console versions, the ports were handled awfully. All versions are now being handled in house at SD so expect a better performance on console this time round. (In fact I'm near sure I read somewhere that consoles were the target platform with this.)

Yeah of course, I was a big ET player. But the fact their classes have historic significance doesn't mean they aren't now uncomfortably similar to TF2 classes. Regardless of who 'did it first', TF2 is the current torchbearer, and they also have a very similar artstyle too, which doesn't help. The GT preview above does a good job of showing off the parkour stuff. Why aren't they pushing that aspect really heavily in the marketing to try and distinguish it?

I really like the look of this, but certain things in the presentation niggle at me. Is it really necessary to have little 'xp' signs popping up whenever you shoot somebody? Or to cover enemies with a blocky red outline? They've obviously put a lot of effort into the art style, but it sort of spoils it to have that stuff distracting you from the pretty visuals.

Again, the SMART system was heavily covered in mags last year as being one of the key things in it.

And as for TF2, does anybody on consoles care about that? (Genuine question, btw). It may be the torchbearer for the PC market but I'd be surprised if the 360 and PS3 weren't the main focus for this.

Nope. Microsoft wouldn't let them patch for free. They elected not to patch at all rather than charge for the content. End of.

So turning their back on an entire section of their customer base who may have gladly paid for patches and updates makes them the hero? What?

I refuse to believe that Microsoft wouldn't let them patch for free...I've never played TF2 and therefore have no idea what needed patched nor what the patch was, but what makes Valve different from every other developer out there that are allowed to patch. (Ie, every single last developer in the world.)

Also, your point about the marketing of Brink is moot as there has been no marketing yet, unless you include the trailers that they have shown of which quite a few showed off the parkour elements.

Publishers actually do have to pay to distribute patches, although I believe the first is a gimme. Both Microsoft and Sony charge a certification fee.

I believe the wider issue with TF2 is that Valve couldn't distribute free content — i.e. maps, modes, the transformational hat fetish — via Live without having to cover all the charges themselves. Presumably this is a large part of their desire to get Steamworks into Portal 2 on PS3: they can push content from their own servers, bypassing certification or other administrative charges.

From memory I believe Microsoft allow something like two or three bug-fix patches for free, then devs have to begin paying themselves.

Content updates are a different matter, I'm not sure if there's actually a limit on the amount of DLC for a game you can release, but yeah Microsoft seem somewhat reluctant to let publishers release free DLC for whatever reason (although there are cases of it happening, for instance Monday Night Combat and Battlefield: Bad Company 2, I'm not sure if the various Burnout Paradise updates were charged for on the 360 or not).

Of course Microsoft being the big bad in this situation wouldn't explain why the PS3 version of TF2 was equally shitty. Also regardless of whether or not Valve could or couldn't charge for hats and extra maps, the actual base version of the console versions was fairly terrible and I'm not sure if it even received a 'free' patch despite promises.

EDIT: What Aimless said.
