No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

What difference would it make taking it to PS3/360?

Not much in terms of gameplay but I'd like to see the world be much more polished. I know part of it's charm is how rough round the edges is but I'm saying I couldn't do with another game of it's style. Either don't bother making it or really make it polished. The actual gameplay (at least the core parts) is quite mainstream really so I think it would have a great audience on ps3/360. Though to be honest it could be a lot more polished even on the wii, it's just that the art in this game is really cheap and nasty which I find a great shame because the designs are great. It's similar to God Hand, the console is capable of much more yet it's so painfully apparent that it has a either an abused art director or a lazy one.

It's similar to the Zelda rule, I don't want more than 2 Zelda's per console. Actually, this applies to many games.

Finished this earlier on, I did it in three sittings over three days. The fighting system is as good as, if not better than, the first game. Having four distinct weapons available is a thoughtful move and broadens the opportunities in combat. The gauntlets to the bosses are better than in the first game, I think, as there's a nice variety of enemies and plenty of different ways to deal with them. It's a shame there's no assassination gigs or challenge events to expand on that side of the combat, the 10 "revenge" mini-missions are okay but they don't really comprise of much content. I'm indifferent towards the decision to ditch the overworld map. The new map looks pretty cool and is obviously much quicker. The new gym setup is ultra-lame though. :D

The core of the game is still the bosses and, sadly, probably 40% of the ones in this game are not really up to scratch. They mostly lack any sort of build-up or mystique, and far too many rely on gimmicks and cheap tactics that result in frustration and the fights not being fun. The majority though are very well put together and extremely fun to play, the 4 fights leading up to the final boss being some of my favourite encounters in any game.

It's enjoyable then, and I'm incredibly pleased the game has been made. It falls short somehow of the first game, regardless of the small ways it exceeds it technically, and it has lost a little of the sneer and bravado that game the original such unusual charm. I enjoyed the story in this a lot more than I thought I would, but it doesn't have anywhere near as much to say as the first game's unique narrative.

I feel like I'm missing out on this really. Loved Killer 7, but never really liked No More Heroes, a game I'm positive I should enjoy. It's the waggle that kills it for me. I know you're mucking around with a sword, but still... the waggle. Got fed up of it. Like with every other Wii game.

You can use the Classic Controller for a waggle-free experience.

I had to stop playing yesterday dues to the dreaded "Wii elbow". I always felt there was just the right amount of motion control in the game, personally, and the little things like weapon clashes that require you to flail the remote around do serve to bring the tension on-screen to life, oddly enough.

This game is fully playable with the classic controller, by the way. I've not tried it myself but it's apparently quite good.

It just occurred to me that using the classic controller probably makes the gym minigame a hell of a lot easier.

I don't see why it would... with the Wiimote you have your fingers poised and ready over both the A & B buttons, whereas with the classic controller you'd be likely to have to switch between two buttons using only your thumb, adding another layer of dexterity to the challenge. Unless you mean the treadmill mini-game, but no-one has any trouble with that, right?

I think I prefer the classic controller. It obviously dulls a bit of that manic fun that comes from the frantic waggling in battles, but it's implemented very well. Maybe I'm just getting old. :D

I'm slightly curious about one of the mechanics of the classic controller actually. When you land a finishing move, you have to enter a directional input using the Wiimote. During this time, you can shake the wiimote for extra power and make the attack an area-of-effect, rather than purely target-based attack, so you can kill a whole group of people if they're bunched together. It's really one of the most satisfying uses of waggle I've ever come across - how's this replicated on the classic controller?

It's not even out in Japan yet, is it? (If it's even coming out at all) what a truly bizarre situation. Is the Euro version at least all bloody and stuff?
Suda needs to give this series a rest or take it to PS3/360.

It's out in Japan and also out for 360 and PS3. Anyone know if those versions are getting a US/Euro release?

Edit: Looks like Ubi aren't bringing it to the States so it's up to someone else.

If either 360 or PS3 have English subs Ill pick it up. 360 versions got more uberviolence apparentley.

I think you are getting a little muddled. The PS3/360 game is a port of the first No More Heroes and not No More Heroes 2.

Got a copy through the door courtesy of Rising Star Games at the weekend, but a busy schedule has meant I've only had chance to play it today, and have to say, its more of the same, only more streamlined and more outrageous.

The time between battles this time round is shortened. This is done in two ways, Santa Destroy is now a menu style map, so no driving around a (absolutely deserted) city this time round, also the journey to each boss is much much shorter than previously. Although there's usually a fair few cutscenes thrown in for good measure (one thing thats been taken out that I liked from the original was Sylvia phoning you and using the Wii remote's speaker as the phone, but its only a small thing).

The whole thing does feel like Tomonobu Itagaki has had a huge hand in its development, if only in the design of the ladies breasts, they have that Dead or Alive over exagerated bounciness to them which makes No More Heroes 2 all the more embarassing to play. The previous game revelled in its geekiness, and this one is no different, but it ranks up the pervertedness to a higher level that it really didn't need to go to.

The "black ash" has been replaced this time. Suda51 censored himself for the Japanese and European release last time, this time the blood is left in and it makes for a more ultra violent (a phrase the games' characters love to throw around) experience.

So far its just as enjoyable, if more ridiculous, than the first release.

I found it to be a bit of a flat fart in comparison to the first game. After the amazingness of the intro battle, it feels so by-the-numbers, despite having a far more refined combat system. There's no phonecalls, and the bosses don't get hyped up whatsoever. If anything, it slightly reels in the daftness.

This.

It's a bit like Kotaku pointed out: in theory, a lot of things have improved, but through that the game has lost its charm. Shame.

As much as anything, it's the lack of a build-up to the battles that's most sorely missed. Sure, Santa Destroy was a bit empty and the odd jobs were a bit crap, but each battle felt like an event. By increasing the number of assassins to beat and reducing the downtime, each fight feels less significant.

Well, given the amount of responses, I can see that this much-delayed PAL release is going to go down a storm in sales terms... :)

Anyway...I'm enjoying it so far. It's still funny, the boss battles are still good, the mini-games are pretty amusing and the combat is generally improved, albeit with one caveat: the removal of camera control. I find this a bit of a pain, to be honest. I understand that solutions are tricky given the Wii setup, but there have been a few nuisance moments thus far.

Tanks a lot for this. I was holding out until it was at least sub 20 so this is a bargain price. Was it released at 19.99?

Sadly not since I paid £25 to ShopTo having pre-ordered it months ago. It's not often you see a game bomba like this before it even gets released.
