No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

Solid SOAP

Well, this is getting really good now. Some of the boss designs are wicked. Just had 2 brilliant bossfights with

Ryuji

and then

Mimmy

.

Ryuji's fucking dragon attack! Bastard!

The second of those two fights I fought as Henry. is a dash move and he's got a projectile charge attack. I love playing as him, he's so fast. The battle was kind of reminiscent of the Ayame Blackburn fight in killer7, with a little bit of MGS 3 perhaps. <3

Oh, and I tried the classic controller earlier. It controls very well with it, and I can see quite a few people opting for this new control scheme tbh. Especially if they want a break from all the WAGGLAN. From what I remember [L] locks on, [y] and [x] were both slash attack, and [a] both kick. You roll using the right stick (which makes dodging a little easier).

Finished. The final boss is some

ridiculous Bruce Wayne rip-off!!

:( Incredible. I did wonder why they'd changed the name of the

Pizza Butt corp

. That Paris, Texas theme runs throughout too. Quite a nice ending I thought. Certainly a lot more reserved than 1's full-on mental twists and turns. Though the point where

them henchmen brought Shinobu, Henry and Sylvia's heads through on a platter proper shit me up

. Bastards!1 :P

Oh yeah, and besides the Bitter difficulty unlock there's

Death Match which appears to be a boss rush mode!

:)

Can't speak of finishing it without a mention of a few standout fights:

Captain Vladimir

- I just loved the character and the setting. Just a really nice concept.

Mimmy

- For me, shades of killer7. Fuck Yeah, Henry!

Ryuji

- What a total badass! Prolly my favourite fight in terms of combat.

When he busts out the ol' DarkStar-mimicking pink laz0r dragon it's beautiful, watching it twist and twirl against the ochre sky

.

They might not have fleshed out enough of the boss characters, but there was definitely a lot of good characters there. Very nice to see a few

returning cast members too

. Totally preposterous, but that's part of the reason why we love these games AMIRITE?

Just ordered this this morning. In preparation I've started playing through Killer7 for the first time. Seems even more batshit crazy than No More Heroes! I have less than no idea about what's going on, but it's certainly a unique experience. To further my current Suda51 fest - I just ordered that Flower, Sun and Rain game for DS. Even if it's supposed to be iffy, the central premise sounds interesting, and it was only £5.73 delivered.

I actually watched a compilation of all the cutscenes from the first game today. :( I forgot how brilliant some the writing really is. The ending is particular is of Monkey Island 2-esque genius with the best

text and font ever.

Glad to see such great first impressions, I'm looking forward to playing a Wii game for the first time in well over a year!

This is pretty fucking rad so far, some levels are shorter than I'd have liked them to be, but besides that it's so much better than the first. The clothes are a lot nicer, but getting money to buy them takes more time! I wish there were small assassination gigs like in this like in the first one, though I'm content with the 8-bit mini-games and Revenge Missions. Also the storyline missions are so much better in this one, and the weapons are ridiculous. The long beam-katana destroys fucking everything, made every boss I've fought it with a joke.

Does anyone else hate Shinobu's platform bits as much as me? They just seem so needlessly clumsy and prone to mistakes beyond the player's control.

Yeah, it wouldn't be so bad if you could position the camera a bit better.

Sat and played this for almost 5 hours yesterday, It's actually keeping me away from Mass Effect 2. Video Games Plus delivery only took around 5 days, not bad.

Currently stuck on the Dynasty Warriors style boss with the big spiky thing and the purple dragon.

Would help if I could Dark Step, but it seems much harder to pull off this time.

Ah man, the Ryuji fight. If you're having trouble with the Dark Step, try keeping your distance for a different approach. He'll do a charge attack with his sword if you're far enough away. Then just evade it and he'll be open for attack.

That's the way I did it in the end... Though I have since mastered the Dark Step. I've found that it's the best way to power up the tiger meter and can now take down most bosses in around a minute. :(

Just done the Rank 2 fight. Awesome boss.

Oh yeah, I don't think it's much of a spoiler tbh but something really cool,

Takashi Miike

makes a guest appearance in this as himself.

Was thinking about ripping all the sound files tonight since it doesn't look like a OST is gonna get released for this. Someone else has prolly already done it, mind. I'll have a hunt around in a bit. I think they've re-used some of the tracks from the Darkside Soundtrack remix album anyway.

:)

I actually think that the soundtrack is the one thing that is 100% better than in the first game. And I own the 3 CD NMH1 soundtrack.

They're both great. I like the variety in this though. Some nice guitar rock and the added vocals on the old themes are a nice touch. Fukuda is awesome, obviously. He was Takada's protege at Grasshopper for years, so there's no-one better to take the reins.

Just beat this, loved every minute of it. I can't wait to beat it again on bitter with all the weapons and clothes unlocked, it's gonna be cool going through the game without having to worry about money or unlocking new stuff too. I thought the ending boss was a little weird, even for No More Heroes, but whatever. I really liked the ending sequence and how they tied up what Sylvia was doing on the phone at the end, great game, can't wait to beat it again and it's making me want to buy and play more Wii games too. When I have the money I will probably be purchasing Tatsunoko vs Capcom next.

Only thing I'm disappointed in isn't in the game itself, but how much I got spoiled prior to buying it. Pretty much every major boss battle except the final one was spoiled in the trailers and reviews, which is kind of a shame because they were all quite grand and the surprise of playing them myself without knowing who or what they were would have made the initial experience so much better. Either way, great game.

I didn't bother watching video reviews etc, got my copy today and played for a hour so far. Great fun and I love the humor. I started on lowest difficulty since I just want to burn through the game for the story and scenes etc. Struggling as it is so I think that was a good choice. If there is a super secret ending like the previous game I'll just watch it on youtube...

Few questions...

1) When I'm just using my beam as usual I don't bother swiping the remote, just push in the direction of the enemy and bash A. I only use swipes if I get the on screen prompts. Though I recall the tutorial saying you get high and low shots depending on the angle of the remote?

2) B is just for grabs when they are stunned right?

3) My battery runs out so much, is there a chance to improve battery life later on? If I have a room with 100 guys I'm going to have to recharge full every 30 or so seconds, is that normal?

4) Went to the gym and just couldn't do any of the tasks at all, especially that tread mill one. Was tapping B+Z one after the other really fast but hardly made a difference. Is it worth going here? Need it to finish the game?

5) Are there REALLY going to be 50 or so boss fights?

1. Yes, you can alter the attack by holding the remote in a low or high stance. If you stand still and just tilt up and down you'll notice Travis changing stance. You can do a swipe attack too, with a quick swing of the remote.

2. can be used for grabs, kicks and acts a bit like a guard breaker. If you dish out a big slash combo you can mix up the kick attack in that.

3. It depletes pretty fast if you're constantly deflecting bullets with it. Try to avoid that by rolling. Most areas have chests with a battery pick-up in them. Try using a couple of things to your advantage; a downed enemy can be insta-killed if you get up close to them. And try to utilise the dark step as much as possible (move in a direction immediately after successfully blocking an attack) to give you the upper hand. And don't forget the ecstasy gauge. Release that each time you reach an excited tiger.

4. Can't remember if it makes a difference, but see if pushing in one direction with the control stick helps. It shouldn't be that difficult tbh. The spar level-up gets pretty difficult, however, but that's a fair bit into training. You'll prolly notice a need to train up as you progress, so I'd say stick with it. You don't need to do it for completion though.

5. That'd be telling.

Just finished this myself. What a game! Deserves a lot more interest than it's getting. I really hope this gets an HD port as well, as it deserves a bigger audience. Loved the whole experience though - even if it was a lot less crazy in terms of plot and stuff this time round.

I mean, wasn't it revealed by Sylvia's mother in the first game that the UAA was just a scam she was pulling? Weird that it didn't get mentioned at all! I was kinda hoping for more headfuck stuff like the museum scene at the end of the last one.

Still, the cast of characters didn't disappoint, some really great personalities and dialogue in there!

The combat is much improved I thought, loved the inclusion of darkside mode, the slot machine stuff was all ace, and the dual beam katanas were fucking ace! Although I forgot until quite near the end that you need to waggle a bit after doing a motion input to make the slash an area of effect attack. After that, I was unstoppable! Quite looking forward to playing through on bitter, even Skelter Helter seemed to put up a good fight. :coffee:

My only other complaint is that I wish there were a few more cool items of clothing and not so many novelty sets.

Eurogamer Review

The game's concessions to traditional game design make No More Heroes 2 a more palatable, satisfying experience. But in doing so, you feel Suda 51 and his team have moved away from Grasshopper's boisterous 'Punk's Not Dead' slogan. Travis Touchdown may not have donned a suit and got himself a desk job - after all, he is still decapitating hot twins - but he's inched towards institutionalisation, with all of the benefits and drawbacks that entails for the young and wild heart.
