No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

But I'm sure this is just a temporary passthrough - they can probably stop you from playing it, but I'd be amazed if they could brick your console for temporarily patching it to play one Japanese game.

Oh right, yeah. Sorry, I thought you were talking about the proper software hacking stuff rather than the FF patch. Worst they could do with that is maybe delete the patch files.

Well, that's what I'm referring to. If you use an SD card to patch in multi-region functionality. I'm weighing up the pros and cons of picking up a European or US system (I understand it's supposed to be a pain in the arse to buy something online with an import system).

It wasn't that bad when I got my US console in 2007. Set my country as Brazil, entered my correct post code and Visa card details and everything has been peachy. It's nice switching on the console and being told what the weather is like in Rio de Janeiro, too.

edit: on topic, I've pre-order with vg+. Fingers crossed the game turns up before next weekend.

IGN Review

8.8

The original No More Heroes was a fun game with obvious flaws that set the experience back. Suda took a step back, figured out what worked, and delivered on the game's original strengths. Desperate Struggle blows it out of the water with a more streamlined experience, far more charm and style throughout, and some downright amazing boss battles. You still run across the occasional weak boss fight, horrible camera situation or framerate crawl, but with as much pure fun as there is packed into the game, you forgive the downsides almost instantly. Suda and company have an amazing ability to deliver original, inspired stuff to players, and the shotgun blast of concepts and designs ensure that there's something fresh at every turn, be it a top-down shooter, a strict workout regimen with your overweight cat, a few rounds in the sparring ring, some hilariously fun retro mini-games, or the purebred ranked battles. This isn't a game that begs you play it. It's a game that knocks on your front door, waits for you to answer in a towel and your favorite pair of slippers, rips your head off, and shoves itself down your throat.

But in a good way.

Not watching the walkthrough videos, the review spoiled enough, but that does it, I AM BUYING THIS GAME. I thought it was just gonna kinda be NMH1 again, but it looks like that and so much more. I wish the review didn't spoil certain things though, but Jesus Christ, I am getting this day one it looks like an absolute fucking blast.

This looks so much better than I expected it to be, I expected an upgrade, but it looks as if they've overhauled every possible problem the original game had and made what was good even better, plus added in as much new and badass stuff as possible. This looks way to good, getting by this week will not be an easy task.

Import it and play it with Gecko?* It's being released tomorrow in the Americas, but places have been shipping it out early.

*I'm assuming this'll work. I should have mine by tomorrow so I can check it on a mates PAL machine for you if you like. What's the disc you had to use?

I used Freeloader before. Never heard of Gecko, what is it in a nutshell?

is this even coming out in the UK? I can't find it on amazon...

Wiki lists it as Feb/March for Europe.

Enjoying this very much so far. Just beat

Charlie Macdonald

. "Glastonbury" is superb :P

The visuals are much improved, there's lots more violence and swearing (the part where you

battle the ghetto blaster guy and those two women get chopped into meat between you

is particularly gruey.

I haven't even left the motel yet and it's already better than the first one. The video you unlock from the 2D shooter, jesus.

Yeah, all that sort of stuff is really disconcerting, veering from slightly off-key pisstake to callously violent moment-to-moment.

I'm not sure if it's make some grandiloquent postmodern point (I find the way the camera points, well, pointedly at breasts to be a very obvious jeering at male gamer's post-adolescent tastes) or is a victim of its own excesses (busty cheerleaders are busty cheerleaders, at the end of the day). But it's visually interesting.

As a game, I'm loving the new map and the way it zooms out. I'd I've liked the option, at least, to take the Schpeltiger out for a whirl, but hey-ho. Graphics are fantastic and amongst the best on the system (both technically and artistically). Realtime weapons change is obviously an excellent addition, too.

I'm sure loads of people want to hear this, too: there's a classic controller option. Haven't tried it out yet, but sounds like a clever concession to the waggle-hating crowd.

I've done the first two ranking battles. It really is like they've taken every complaint from the first game and sorted it all out, although I wish they had sorted the overworld out and had the menu as an option rather than ditching it entirely. Dodging could be easier as well, it's rubbish on the Dpad. It should have just been mapped to shaking the nunchuk.

Shopto have this down for a June release (which is probably just as well, given all the other stuff coming out between now and then). That's not 100% reliable, but the lack of coverage would suggest a Q1 release isn't on the cards anymore (if it ever was in the first place).

Oh man, this is awesome.

Skelter Helter?!

Hahaha. I'm heading up to

Nathan Copeland

now.

Loving the new Gym trainer. All the side jobs are pretty addictive, too. I kept on the 'Lay the pipe' job for ages. It sure remedies the monotony of the first's whore time. I can certainly see myself inclined to revisit them for gains this time. Though I'm thinking all the 2D stuff might work better with the classic controller. I'll give it a shot later.

With all these little flashbacks to

Linda(?) in the booth

I'm getting a very strong vibe from Paris, Texas here. Shit is awesome.

Transforming into

the Tiger

. :(

The video you unlock from the 2D shooter, jesus.

Not so long ago I fought

Dr. Shake. Great to see him back and finally spar with him. I love how Henry was frozen in carbonite a la Han Solo

. ;)

I've just started playing as Shinobu now. There's a neat little alternative to Travis' WAGGLAN battery charge. Combat is pretty similar, only Travis' kick is replaced with a jump and can be carried through into an aerial attack when pressed in succession. She has a charge, and can adopt high and low stance attacks just like Travis with a tilt of the remote. That's it so far. Be cool to see if she has any power-ups.

There's quite a few side jobs atm, too. I've got something like 8 or 9 unlocked. Is anyone any good

at the space rubbish collection one?

So frustrating from level 3 onwards... God, I'm crap at that.

Is this still on for both 'extreme' and 'no blood' flavours in europe? Any word of a release date?

Or, failing that, what's the best site to import from? ;)

Not too sure on the Europe release date. I'd give videogamesplus a shot for an import. They've got it for a relatively low price.
