Where is teh retro?

I'm getting married in about 5 weeks - so the Dreamcast, Saturn, Megadrive and Mega-CD all had to go :-( It was simply a matter of space. Whilst there's space on the stand, there isn't enough space for all those games..

Still got an N64 somewhere as well as Steel Battalion for that other Xbox.

Space saving meant I needed to make a decision to focus my collection - and I'm predominantly going to be Playstation from here on. I was really sad to the Saturn and Dreamcast go in particular - especially X-Men vs. Streetfighter :-(

Getting rid of the Dreamcast? Are you crazy? It'll all end in divorce!

lol - I realised that the main reason I had a Dreamcast now was for fighting games and since I bought a MadCatz TE stick for PS3 a few months ago, that has to be my main console for fighting games.

(I did keep Shenmue and Shenmue 2 though shhhhh :))

I honestly don't understand men that do this. Would she agree to throw half her shoes away? Storage is really very inexpensive and the fact is, you're getting rid of something you love and have a passion for (in ten years, some of these consoles and games won't be available) - any woman worth her salt wouldn't even dream of letting you get rid of this stuff. Surely you have friends/relatives who'd let you store this in their attic or garage?

I understand the rationale you've applied - but to be honest, I do love videogames - but not as much as my wife to be. I don't want to force to be surrounded by videogames in a little flat. I can live without it. Besides, I'm making room for future console expansion when we get a bigger place :-)

There has got to be the right balance and I've certainly tidied up my collection to make the house a nicer place for my wife, my daughter and me. I certainly haven't got rid of anything that I want to keep (if that makes sense).

My rate of buying has dropped off considerably due to a lack of space.

I have to agree. I had a GC, N64 & PS1 in the cabinet. The PS1 was never used, the N64 only for the occasional nostalgia trip to Goldeneye land, and the GC had been neglected due to the newly aquired Wii's BC. Did a boot fair and sold all three. Now it's much tidier under there (Wii, PS2 & Xbox only) although it could be better due to the all the controllers, and my bank account is much happier.

You could move your daughter into the cupboard under the stairs? Extra bedroom for storage then.

My missus understands that I am a gamer and doesn't stand in the way of me, unless it directly and negatively affects us as a family. Which it never does (is the reason I still haven't been able to afford a PS3). She would rather I was at home gaming than out at the pub every night.

My g/f of 3 years never could understand why I love gaming so much. Anything over 30 mins of game-time and she'd come running in trying to sit on my knee or in the way of the TV! It's sad to say, but her lack of respect of this is actually one of the main reasons we're in the process of breaking up...

start rant.

I'm actually pretty fortunate that my wife-to-be is as understanding as she is. She doesn't mind the fact that it all takes up so much space. Or that it's kinda embarassing having a Rock Band drum kit in the front room. She doesn't mind that I read a lot about videogames, talk about videogames, listen to videogame soundtracks etc.

(I recently met Final Fantasy XII composer Hitoshi Sakimoto who gave us permission to use a theme from FFXII at our wedding. My future sister-in-law is playing it on the piano.)

My wife-to-be (wow this is getting boring - she'll be referred to as my wife from here on) has Crohn's disease and she gets tired out really fast and sometimes just passes out on the sofa, meaning I can't then do anything in the front room.

I was really happy when she bought me wireless headphones so that even if she passed out - I can keep on playing.

My wife is exceptionally understanding, giving even, about my love of videogames - I just don't have the desire to swamp her in videogames more than I need to.

This is a hobby, a profession and a passion of mine - but that doesn't mean I shouldn't respect my wife by not letting it over run our lives.

Marriages take hard work guys and I intend to give it my all - I won't be letting playing videogames become a wedge between my wife and I, because it is, after all, a hobby.

I think Bradigor nailed it on the head when he said this:

My missus understands that I am a gamer and doesn't stand in the way of me, unless it directly and negatively affects us as a family. <snip> She would rather I was at home gaming than out at the pub every night.

end rant.

Let's try and get back on topic now though ;)

Here's my gaming area...

02082009054.jpg

I mostly play on the N64 and Dreamcast but there's a 360, DS, PSP and Wii in the picture too. Retro roll-call:

2xSNES (PAL, modded)

2xGamecube (PAL, NTSC+modded)

2xN64 (PAL, NTSC+RGB+cart mod)

1xFranken-cast (a modified Dreamcast built from other parts)

1xChipped Xbox (mostly here for Steel Battalion!)

1xPS2 (HDD-enabled)

1xMegadrive+Mega CD combo (covered in bubble wrap; it gets dusty up top!)

1xPSOne+LCD screen

There's a GBA SP, GPX and PlayPal hidden on the desk.

...and sitting just behind the Doctor Who stuff is the Steel Battalion controller. Pedals behind the Tokai. On the shelf are most of my Dreamcast games, a selection of Saturn titles (which is currently upstairs plugged into the plasma, steering wheel and a copy of Sega Rally!) and PSOne games. The metal box has most of the Xbox, PS2, Gamecube and some other disc based games in it (it holds 350 discs). Most everything else is in the shed; here is just the stuff I frequent the most as everything else is just merchandise :) Apart from the N64 carts which are in shoe boxes under the stairs for instant access, boxes flat packed and put in the loft :) Controllers live in a box also located under the stairs. Just out of shot on the left is an Aero City cab:

Just about everything is plugged in hence all the wires down the back of the unit. The TV is a F&H 22" LCD off eBuyer. Has two HDMI inputs (PC, 360), SCART (magic Argos SCART block, N64, SNES), VGA (Dreamcast) and component input (component switch, Xbox, Gamecube and PS2). It does a reasonable job of scaling, showing off big blocky pixels for SNES and N64 games ;)
