Thanks for the games last night guys that was good fun. Was worried that the private race was gonna be me at the back in a milk van tootling along like a Sunday driver but the catch up mechanic works great. I am sure I am at the satge where you all have been of trying to imagine 20 rllmukers in a private match with elasticity wreaking havoc on the streets in search of glory.

Will deffo be up for more games in the future.

all you guys saying the SP is hard later on, are you playing it on medium or hard difficulty?

I'm on Medium.

From what I can see, all it changes is the AI skill-level/catchup rate - none of the challenges actually get harder so it has no effect at all on Destruction or Checkpoint races...

cool

gotta say last night, just 5 of us in a private race I was really impressed by how competitive and fun it was. A truly great multiplayer game.

Cool  I've missed you, man ;)

Parents are having a barbeque downstairs with people I can't fucking stand. Hence I'll sneak down to get some food and then stop in my room. Not long now till I get my own place (hopefully). I'm so jealous of Meerman and his batchelor pad. :(

Don't know how it works in the UK, but I got my own place (a room in a student's house) at age 20, like most people here who go to uni and stuff. I couldn't have held out much longer at my parents' for various reasons, and even now if I'm there for more than 5 days, we all go mad. Hope you find a nice place soon enough, if only for the freedom you get then: doing whatever you like, the endless gaming sessions without nagging and, you know, other stuff ;)

Ironically, I will have to do the dishes tonight, so I'll probably have to go offline for a while during Blur

Best. Race. EVER.

:D

Excellent set of races with Fazz, Corleth and Funtime Dave. I was onto a Winning Streak x5 near the end, only to be beaten by Fazz. On the plus side: I finally got my Viper ACR back!

lol yes mate, you were on fire for that race - I was fearful of getting lapped. Thanks for the games, I had a nice few battles with Corleth and amazing scenes with my first 20 player victory in the VW Bettle - GET IN. Nice one to Karzee for showing me the way of the batering ram, a whole new meta game has opened up and that ECM mod is a god send.

Will no doubt catch a few games over the weekend and Gambit it is all good with your own place but eventually a whole new set of nagging begins ;-)

There seems to be hardly anyone playing this. Every time I go online there are around 800 people spread across a couple of the playlists I have available to me (Driving School, Skirmish, and whatever the next one is). I'm finding it really hard to compete, and whilst the mechanics are attractive, it's just annoying at the moment:

You can't avoid Shunts as the game suggests you can. Getting hit by three in a row because you don't happen to have the right power-up to defend with is bloody annoying, and rewards spamming power-ups over driving skill. There's also a huge memory game factor here. I'm seeing people destroy everyone else (by 15+ seconds) and I can only guess that they have memorised where the Nitros are and are just boosting around the track. Which is all well and good when you're in first place, but not feasible when you're fighting it out with 3 or 4 other cars, and scrapping over road position and power-ups.

I like the presentation, speed and handling, but it seems to over-reward memorising power-up locations and playing for 50+ hours over driving well :)

EDIT: This video illustrates my point really well. The guy gets in front, and pretty much has a constant stream of shields, rendering him invulnerable to opponents attacks. He fluffs lots of corners but still dominates the race because he has the pick of the power-ups and can fire Shunts backwards, so his opponents have to contend with that as well.

Easy way to deal with those type of players. 'Blue Shell'. Hopefully Bizarre have earmarked it and will update accordingly.

Although I've seen players alternate between nitros and shields in 1st place.

If the 'Blue Shell' beats a shield, sure, but it shouldn't need a patch - surely this should have been thought about during the design phase. I'm not trying to hate on the game - there are plenty of people loving it, and I like what I see, but it just feels unfair.

This does happen on occasion, yes. In the first weeks of play I sometimes noticed someone breaking free and pulling a lead like this, these days even some of the regular forumites in this game manage it, like Fazz and me.

I think it's pretty much fair for this to happen, as you can only get ahead like this by driving really well - power-ups alone can't get you a lead like this if you keep hitting walls etcetera. Still, it's up to the rest of the field to not allow someone to break free like here. This can be quite hard if you keep involved in battles with others who aren't in the lead, but with the proper balance between speed, defense and offence right from the beginning of the race you should be able to stick with the leader.

At that point, as long as you manage to maintain your speed and occasionally pick up a power-up to close the gap (mostly Nitro's, Shunts and Shocks), it's far from impossible. Just focus on not letting anyone break free.

Because once again: the only way to lead a race like this is if you drive really well (I noticed that with Fazz on the Barcelona Oval tracks and with myself in that Hackney race in the Mustang GT-R). To beat a player who does, just drive better.
