This years one big game

The new wii sports. It seems so obvious to me, I don't get how anyone could think otherwise.

No way. It may well sell loads and it may be significant but it won't be the 'biggest' game of the year. That's entirely a different thing.

The GTA thread on here has 540 pages (on my view) which is more than double anything else in 2008. Wii sports 2 will get nowhere near that level of interest.

Going by thread replies you could say that SF4 has been the one big game ;) , but I think that the love for the game has come from a vocal minority, and that Resi 5 gathered a lot more attention but less discussion. Of games still to be released...personally, I'm still really looking forward to Bionic Commando, and I think it could surprise people who've perhaps overlooked it...but then that's probably wishful thinking. :D

It's difficult to see just exactly what impact it will have. First of all it ships with the new Motionplus which, although we've read about what it does, is still an unknown quantity. It could be truly, totally revolutionary, in much the same way Wii Sports 1 was, but at the same time it might get ignored by the more casual elements of the Wii's new expanded audience who've already had their fill of Wii Sports. At this stage we just don't know enough to make proper predictions. My hunch is that it will take a lot of people by surprise in just how much more advanced the motion control is, and therefore how much more depth will be added to the games - something which critics of the first one often point to.

Do we even know which 'sports' it will cover yet?

I'll have to put my hand up here, I'm guilty of not knowing much about it. So it's got some sort of jet-ski racing and fecning has it?

edit. if anyone's interested I found this on Wiki

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_Sports_Resort

Games announced to be included (so far) are: Frisbee (Disc Dog), Jet Skiing (Power Cruising) and Kendo (Sword Play).[3] However, it has been indicated that there will be at least 10 games included in the final product.[4]

;)

So you say it may well be the biggest game of the year, yet personally, have absolutely no interest in it and had to wiki it?

I am interested in it actually, but as you can see from wiki there's not really much to go on is there? Besides, you'd have to be a bit special to think that the sequel to the biggest game this generation would be anything other than HUGE. Even if you did have no interest in it whatsoever.

I think they're more popular across a broader spectrum, yeah.

There's no way that's even remotely true.

So the 'biggest' game of the year is measured by the size of its thread now? Kerrazy.

I don't think the Rock Band demographic is concurrent with that of The Beatles. Uncle Clive put it well before, they go in and out of fashion. They were definitely in fashion when they had that big EMI marketing blitz a few years back due to the reissues, and Kurt Kobain used to harp on about them dragging a nation of grunge kids along with him. But these days I think they appeal to a mainly older crowd, and not one that would be bothered about setting up all those instruments in their room at Christmas. That's just my perception, whereas with Abba I think everyone's a bit partial to a knees up with them, all ages, and helped by the money guzzler that is Mama Mia. I do think it's fair when someone said Abba aren't really a band though, so I don't think Rock Band Abba would be that successful on reflection.

I think you're wrong but the point I was making was that The Beatles : Rockband will appeal way beyond the current Rock Band demographic. They are the biggest act in the history of popular music, this game will 'expand' the market.

I think your perception is probably correct for the UK. In the USA (which is far and away Rock Band's biggest market I would suggest) trends tend to move much more slowly, and The Beatles are still big and popular with all ages. Hell, I was basically introduced to The Beatles by my American wife, before I only really had a passing interest in their music. My nephew has Revolver on his iPod and he's 13. OK, so he has more Fall Out Boy albums, but still, he's addicted to GH/RB games. I'll bet Beatles:Rock Band will be on his Xmas list.

I'd be very, very interested in Rock Band: Rolling Stones.

Trouble with the Stones is that they'd probably insist on having their entire career represented, which lets face it, has been shit for what, the last 30 years?

Sadly, yeah. The last great record they made was Exile on Main St. in 1972, so almost 40 years. Luckily they haven't actually made that many since. If they just based it on that Greatest Hits package from four or five years ago it'd be good. I'd enjoy it a lot more than The Beatles, who weren't a great live band anyway.

You're even more critical than I am of them, I at least had some fondness for "Some Girls", which is where I came up with my 30 years figure. My worry about the past 30 years makes me simply want more stones DLC, its a bit of a tragedy that the only thing we have from them in Rock Band is Gimme Shelter.

Street Fighter IV

By a ways as well, a revival of a truly legendary franchise, and the first fighting game in years to have appeal beyond the hardcore. Certainly the first casual-friendly fighting game to have good online play (DOA and Tekken were utter shitonline , and VF5 is about as hardcore and exclusive of a title as there is).

I'm confused, isn't this thread meant to be a looking forward thread in view of the vague release dates and arguable lack of "big" games coming out?

Alan Wake should be on the list really but I don't think it will stand up well after so long in Dev, I'm getting a Daikatana vibe from it for some reason.

In terms of sales, Wii Sports 2 will murder it, I'm sure.

Heavy Rain probably won't be it either, could be pleasantly surprised on that front but I don't think it's got the mass appeal that other games do, it will probably be good but not to the degree that Sony or even Mr. Cage would like I think...

Final Fantasy XIII has got to be up there too
