This years one big game

I'm trying to think but unless I'm overlooking something massive, there isn't one. I'm tempted to say Dragon Quest IX but i) it's unlikely we'll see an English language version this year and ii) it's only massively popular in Japan. Last year there was GTAIV, the year before that Halo 3 and possibly Mario Galaxy, hard to choose which is biggest out of those two.

You know, those games that have 500 page threads before they're even out?

Wii Sports 2 will in all likelihood be the biggest seller but I don't think it's the most highly anticipated.

So what's that one big game I've forgotten about?

Good call. I was hoping for something, I dunno something of the magnitude of a GTA or a Mario. But it's MW2 isn't it? I can't see anything being bigger.

In terms of sales, I really don't know what could outsell it, considering how big the last one was. I'm sure it'll be a good game as well, but I doubt it'll be the year's best.

You think Fallout 3 was BIGGER than GTAIV? People were there for midnight launches, queueing all day, fighting over last copies. The anticipation was HUGE. Fallout isn't even in the same league.

One game a year?

it's not the n64 anymore, we get plenty of great games all through the year now.

Well if you can think of more than one, tell us.

Isn't there some Nintendo shit coming out this year? Like Wii Fit 2: Revenge of the Fatties, or Wii Sports 2: Reggie Strikes Back or whatever. Something like that is bound to be the biggest this year, even if I'm not interested at all.

Edit: must read opening posts better. Not in terms of sales, but in terms of Forum Frenzy, then ODST or probably Modern Warfare 2, even if I'm not interested at all.

My point is that Fallout 3 is still being talked about and seen as an amazing achievement. GTAIV is today's fish and chips.

True dat.

GTAIV is still being talked about, bearing in mind it came out a good while before Fallout too, it's had DLC only recently and it has also sold considerably more than Fallout 3. And i mean considerably.

I have very high hopes for Halo ODST - some one at bungie has had some kind of epiphany and realised Halo 1 was actually a fucking fnatastic template and all the bollocks dropping off the franchise since the second need the rubber band treatment pronto.

Basically, Halo ODST looks like being the Halo 2 single player experience I and many others always wanted. And if it is, its game of the fucking decade.

In terms of sales, Modern Warfare 2 will decimate everything. Look at how successful 4 was. It was the best selling game of 2007 by far, which was a fantastic gaming year in general. Personally, I'm not that interested in it at all. The game I'm looking forward to most is Bayonetta, which is a niche title when you compare it to the juggernauts of this year.

From what I've seen and read, it was the final proof I needed to accept that even Bungie themselves will never understand what makes Halo 1 so fucking good, even today. No Elites? No thanks. Halo 1 was a fluke.

You're right, WaW did sell like crazy even if it (allegedly) didn't come close to 4. Modern Warfare 2 it is then.

Like you, 2009 is all about more 'niche' titles for me (well, niche compared to the stuff being mentioned in this thread) - Way of the Samurai 3, Bayonetta, Batman, Prototype, etc etc

Anyway, I think my criterion for BIG game isn't the same one you're going on. Sheer units sold isn't the criterion that I think is very useful (beyond making someone a lot of cash) but this is probably not the place for that discussion.

Not just units sold but obviously that reflects a games popularity. Do you not remember the anticipation and hype surrounding GTA4? It has the longest thread in Gaming Discussion apart from the sales thread I think.

?

Am I missing an in-joke, or is Dizogg part of the development team of the game?

I thought he was part of the development team, unless this forum lied to me. Which could very well be the case, it's the internet after all.

That's how I felt playing 2 and 3. Both were absolutely awful. I played through less than an hour of each after putting untold days into the first one's campaign on every difficulty setting.

As much as I like Hip Hop, I hope he isn't in charge of the soundtrack. The game looks very atmospheric from what I've seen, and

or Ludacris on the title screen would be all kinds of wrong.
