Okay, I bought this on PC this weekend (yeah, I know I'm an idiot but it was on sale and I was feeling flush) and fuck me, does everybody on PC have Marathon - Lightweight - Commando permanently equipped? I have had five games in three lobbies, 32 kills 32 deaths, and I think I have been killed with a gun less than 10 times so far. <_<

Well, I have had six games of multiplayer on PC now, spread out over four lobbies. I'm not doing so great, 38 kills to 41 deaths. The number of people on PC who play Marathon > Lightweight > Commando or Marathon > Lightweight > Shotgun is fucking insane though. The ratio is far far higher than that on console, at least if my small sample is anything to go by that is. I guess it's harder to hit somebody who is hauling ass with a mouse when you don't have the console auto aim to help you out (which also might explain the lack of quick scopers and drag scopers on PC) but it does highlight that a great game is ruined by some perks which really should have been playtested in a beta before the game got released. I doubt anybody will care in a month or so when Black Ops is out, but that kinda speaks to the failings of MW2, doesnt it? I cant see any significant numbers of people still playing this three years after release like they do with COD4, or eleven years after release like they do with Counter Strike.

It's a real shame, because this game is the first FPS I have actually felt the desire to become any way competent at (I'd say I'm about a 1.5k/d player so the use of the word "competent" is open for debate) but for the sake of two or three things making this game incredibly easy to cheese your way through, MW2 could be an all time classic. Instead people will just remember the broken bits when they go back and look at it in a couple of years.

Up to 93000 kills,51000 deaths, 1.80 k/d.

Played for just under 25 days in TDM.

This game is digital crack - i 'retire' and always end up going back a few weeks later.

It's so far ahead of the current competition IMO - neither Reach or BFBC2 have really left much of an impression.

I think it's down to how extremely streamlined everything is, within 30 seconds of turning on the xbox i'm playing an online game in a game mode i want to play. Compare that to Reach, where i've played for an hour and still not gotten a variant on a map i want to play.

Doesn't matter if people quit as they are replaced in next to no time.

I hated World at War, but i'm eagerly anticipating Black Ops as i need my next CoD fix.

The main, teeth-grindingly annoying, thing that's wrong in this game is the knife. Not the tac knife or even Commando but the plain knife any dull, situationally-unaware scrub can instantly kill you with because of panic reaction. There's no, or certainly very little, "lock-on" with the knife in CoD4 which makes it a somewhat less than 50/50 chance of you actually getting the other guy. You stick with your gun unless you're desperate (out of ammo) and sometimes it comes off. It's always fair, however, which is something the lunge and lock-on knife in MW2 definitely isn't.

Agreed.

And to counter it, all they needed to do was a 'stab vest' perk which meant 2 knives to kill you. Sadly they never bothered.

Nice going. That's a lot of kills in 25 days. I'm now on 159/70 k/d for a kdr of 2.28. The first half of my kills were on TDM, with the rest being on FFA, where it's a bit easier to improve your kdr. 1.80 on TDM is excellent, imo.

I really hate being stabbed. Really, really hate it, but I've never really held it against the game or seen it as a fault in the game. What bothers me more than being stabbed is that I am utterly shit at stabbing. A combination of it never occurring to me to stab someone (which I've tried to work on but never mastered) and my knife seemingly refusing to activate even when it does occur to me must see me at the bottom of the table in knife skills. Bizarrely, most of my knife kills come from accidentally pushing the stick when someone surprises me.

Thanks. I've tried a few matches of FFA and enjoyed it - my main problem is i've always got perks equipped which help in TDM but are useless in FFA. Wish you could have different load outs for different game modes. I know we've got 10 slots, but even that isn't enough.

I'm exactly the same. I remember the once i was up to level 40 or something before i got the backstabber challenge (stab 1 guy in the back) i just can't get my head around knifing, i always seem to judge the distance wrong and end up slicing the air like a loon,or forget i've put commando on and still wait till i'm extremely close range before clicking the stick. Don't think i run it on any of my classes now - just find Ninja and Steady Aim so much more useful.

Id have made it like Halo or TF2. Melee is a one hit kill if you stab somebody in the back. It's not if you stab them in the front.

I always thought the knife system in counter strike was best in some ways. You only pull it out if you need to or if you want the satisfaction of a stealthy back stabby kill. Maybe a melee button for striking them with a weapon + actual knife as a weapon could be good if not a little more complicated

I think they are doing something similar in Black Ops, arent they? You actually have to switch to your knife if you want to use it rather than just being able to fire it whenever you get the urge.

I never really bothered with knifing because I play on tactical so maybe I am biased against the knife just because it's not really part of my arsenal. I assume some players who play with default feel the same about the drop shot?

He still does, just does the odd one with guest commentary.

And yeah I got about a minute into that vid and couldn't face another second of it. Oh well.

Anyway I'm trading this in today. Had a few final goes on it last night to get my KD above 1.0 - by four whole kills - trading it for Medal of Honor then trading that for Black Ops. So long, MW2. You were awesome and we had some great times but ultimately you were riddled with cunts.

Fuck me. I swear to god I have died more times to commando knife lunges and grenade launchers in 10 games on PC than I have in the last six months on 360. Is the PC version really full of cunts who use the cheapest, cheesiest kits available? It's maddening!

Know exactly what you mean. On close maps like Favela it's a proper stab-fest.

I might play a bit more this evening, although I'll probably end up getting seriously frustrated and pack it in. It's one of those games where I'm utterly dire yet want to keep playing. Typically I'll get, say, 5 kills to 15 deaths. Best killstreak was 4, apparently, although I'm sure I got more. Tempted to try Black Ops but I know I'll be just as bad, but still tempting.

The great thing about the console version is when that happens I just bust out the AA-12 with extended mags and bob's yer uncle.

That made me wonder about the PC version. While it seems there is a significantly higher percentage of players who use cheap tactics like ripper and oma noob tube, is it just that I'm unable to deal with them on PC and therefore notice it more?

I'm not as quick to aim as I would like and I still havent unlocked a lot of my favourite things. Time put in will no doubt fix the problem, but unfortunately that time is destined to be frustrating as I get done over by yet another prick cheesing it with Marathon-Lightweight-Commando.

Those MLC players can be so bloody annoying on certain maps, but on a map like Sub-Base, where only the foolish will try to rush you in the open, continuously keep coming back for more, it makes that SPAS-12 to the face it all the more satisfying. :D

The guy doing the commentary for this Sandy Ravage video makes me ashamed to be British.

 He talks absolute rubbish throughout. "I don't know about you guys but when I use an AC-130 I don't get the little red boxes so I can only assume it's Randy's aim-bot working overtime for him" Holy lol.
