BBC: MW2 Makes $1bn

Video game Modern Warfare 2 has become one of only a handful of entertainment franchises to take more than $1bn (£625m)in revenue, its publishers say.

It went on sale in November and made an estimated $550m in its first five days.

The sales put it alongside other $1bn titles such as Guitar Hero III and World of Warcraft, also owned by publisher Activision. It also puts it alongside other entertainment franchises such as the recent 3D science fiction smash Avatar. The film's takings as of 04 January make it the fourth-biggest film ever made.

Ahead of it are Titanic ($1.8bn; £1.1bn), The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King ($1.12bn; £695m) and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.07bn; £664m). However, direct comparisons between films and video games are difficult as games typically retail for between three and five times the cost of a cinema ticket.

The first-person-shooter game is the sixth instalment in the Call of Duty series. It has since become the best-selling videogame of 2009 in the UK, according to industry body Elspa.

"The phenomenal success of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was undoubtedly one of the leading entertainment stories of the year and firmly established videogames as one of the leading forms of entertainment in the UK," said Michael Rawlinson, Director General, Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA).

I vented about this around 20 pages or so back. It seems daytime brings out the worst kind of player. Night time I don't spot em so much but the number of complaints I file if i'm on in the day for racist names / behaviour is ludicrous. I'm really not a prude but i'm screwed if i'm going to play a game with someone who calls themselves kill[insert racist name here].

Mute is always your friend also.

Was it kill all pakis by any chance? I gave him a verbal and message hammering then reported the cunt.

Observation

American's can't say 'cunt' without sounding strange. It doesn't have the venom that the general British accent does.

Yet, strangely, they bandy it about like any old word. It is positively cliché over the pond.

But then, it's Xbox Live, and it's PSN, so, well, you get cunts all over it anyway.

Most Americans would die of a heart attack if you said 'cunt' to them, let alone say it themselves.

I was on MAG the other day and, thanks to the inadequate on-screen signals distinguishing your own team mates from the enemy, coupled with COD6's lack of friendly fire, I accidentally shot a team mate running away from our own base (covered in smoke).

A minute or so later this guy came back for a vengeance, said, "you're such a cunt, LEE FIDDY, you cunt," and killed me back. Good job armies don't work like that in the real world or America would have no army left. He was definitely American too. Maybe black. You can sometimes tell from the pitch of the voice.

Started going through that wingsofredemption guy's videos last night. Made me revert to the UMP, I forgot why I used this gun when I first started, it's lethal.

One thing I did notice is that he seems to be able to drop to the floor while aiming, does that mean he has one of those modified pads with the B (or in his case O) button on the underside? It seems to make quite a difference.

But you have your thumb on the right stick, meaning it's not free to press B?

You can change the layout of the controller in options. If you select "tactical" it switches the position of prone and melee, therefore R3 will make you hit the deck. You will look like an idiot for a few rounds when you try to knife somebody and dive face first into the dirt instead of killing them though.

As for headsets, a decent stereo headset will do the job very well so if you have one lying about use that. I dont think Turtle Beach sell their products in the UK, but you can get the Tritton 5.1 headsets over here. I got some AX360's for about £80 a couple of years back (for COD4 actually) and they are excellent. They are branded as Sharkoon X-Tatic over here, but they are the exact same headset with a different sticker on the side. They are Dolby approved 5.1, which is still quite rare in headphones, and the surround effect is very good. It doesnt simulate bullets whooshing past your head or jet fighters flying over you as well as a proper 5.1 system, but for gaming they are definitely better than a 5.1. Well, for FPS they are at least. They plug into a PS3 or 360 too. They seem to be sold out on Amazon, but I'm sure you can find some if you shop around. They might suffer from SFIV Joystick syndrome though, I would imagine the price has been jacked as everybody is after them at the moment.

Ah thanks, that makes a lot more sense. I wish I'd changed that setting when I first started playing back in COD4 because the muscle memory melee attack is going to be hard to break.

Just had my first game of FFA since having my 360 returned from repair, and I managed to squeak first place which was nice!

It was really weird playing it after a week off though, it felt like the whole screen was zoomed in, very strange sensation.

turtle beach are sold in GAME, cheapest being £40 or so. i had a look thinking i might be able to get some decent headphones/headset for £20ish - pretty expensive these things, probably won't even bother.

In GAME it's about £45 for the wired headphones and well over £100 for the wireless ones. Having read a number of reviews it seems that the wired set is much better.

I was contemplating buying a pair last night while in Bluewater but I managed to refrain! (rarely wear the headset these days anyway since I play Merc TDM and have no desire to talk to any of em!)

yeah, £45 isn't TOO bad but it does still feel a bit much, i mean i'd be pissed if they were to break - and headsets for me have a history of breaking.. would probably be worth it in the long run, but just don't have the money to splash on it. :)

anything below £30 would probably get me seriously looking, but it doesn't seem likely at all - anywhere.

I don't think that's what you meant to say, is it?
