Modern Warfare 2

I have played some Groundwar too, but you still have the safety net of a load of other players...it just doesn't flick my switch anymore.

I used to play a ton of team based stuff with the rllmuk Halo 2 & 3 crew, but I think it was playing BF1943 that converted me to the lone wolf stuff. Which is mainly because I'd just moved house and couldn't be bothered to find my headset. It just suits me more now.

But the problem with TDM is that noone i have played it with plays as a team... If you team up as a three with one person using a riot shield drawing fire and the other two with Assault rifles etc you can normally beat 70-80 % of other players you come up against as they are all running around being rambo... It would be sooo ace to be able to play (when your mates aren't on obviously cos i normally just default to waiting for them to play with) every time with people actually trying ot play like a proper tactical squad. On Battlefield modern combat back in the day there was a real squad vibe going on especially as the vehicles really worked best with more then one player in them... That is what is missing from what is a quality fps... Also because everyone runs around rambo style getting all over the map you end up being stabbed from behind... there is no real 'feeling' of war where you know where the enemy are and can tactically maneover to flank them (ala band of brothers hells highway single player).

A few posts from earlier in the thread:

It's good to be looking at the mini map absolutely all the time in the corner of your eye, and just as useful as the red dots are the green arrows. If a team-mate is facing one way you can strike off that angle as covered, no matter how good he is. If you hear "tango down" you know they're coming from the direction he's facing and he's taken one out, and similarly if he disappears you know he's just been killed from the direction of the red dot - no red dot means he was knifed or killed with a silencer. The radar often quite subtley gives you massive amounts of information on where the enemy is.
I never use cold blooded, but I spend the vast majority of the game never on the opposition's UAV. When they put a UAV up, retreat back to your team and try and predict where they'll come from based on the positions of your team-mates, because they'll be hunting you.

I play masses of Mercs TDM on my own and absolutely love it. I mute everyone and have a great time, playing it like a score attack. I urge everyone who plays FFA to give it a go using the radar like this. Play defensively. If someone is moving let them come to you instead of going to them. Use a silencer. Try the silenced SCAR again. SUCH a beast.

Mercanary Team Deathmatch should be renamed Team Awesome-match. Or Team Score Attack Match. Hey man I should be naming these modes. I'd love to post a video with a really boring commentary over the top though. I'm not shelling money out on video capture stuff though, get lost pal.

I'm much the same - I used to play almost nothing but objective games with a smattering of TDM, but since CoD4 have spent the majority of my time playing FFA. Its quite a different gametype, for sure, but it feels fairer and somehow purer than the other gametypes, at least with regard to Call of Duty. Also I don't see how K/D is helped by playing FFA, if you want a high kill ratio play domination and do nothing but defend a point.

I'd have loved it if there had been a Halo 3-style Theatre mode for this game. I reckon I'd learn a huge amount watching some of you guys play.

I'm at that point. Do I Prestige? Part of me just wants to get the fuck on with kicking ass, and having my perfect classes. But then another part of me, the proper fucking nerd in me, likes seeing challenges and shit pop up mid game.

Bah!

Single Player: Soap says, "I've been compromised, keep a low profile." Then something about plan B. Then he keeps getting executed, and it's game over.

I don't get it.

I'm not sure how they could've made it any clearer, but earlier on he had you plant explosives on the fuel tanks, and called it Plan B.

Bah!

I'm not far off my 2nd Prestige and when I get that I'm going to cease Prestiging any further because it's getting dull (and I like the red star symbol for Prestige 2)

Boosters ruin this game a lot for me on FFA. Though it can be fun hunting them down.

I prestiged yesterday and initially hated it! I use the Famas and RPD mainly, so it wasn't too bad, but my loud footsteps are doing my head in, I need ninja pro back :-( Crouching everywhere makes me quiet but not as mobile. I also picked up a AK47 with red dot and loved it! Should have given it more time at level 70.

I used to love the level up and challenge complete music mid game, but now I'm using surround sound headphones(and relying on them a LOT) I find it annoying as I can't hear anything! It's worse than being blind! Same goes for the music towards the end of matches.

It's okay, I sorted myself out, and realised what I needed to do. To be honest, the story is so fucking dull, my mind tends to filter out a lot of the conversation, or I forget it a second later. I'm just too busy moving forward to the next duck shoot. The other characters might as well just shut their fucking yaps when I'm under heavy fire, as none of it registers at all.

you only fixed it for slow people!

all i really play is free for all and my k/d is okay, 5000 deaths and 7000 kills, 23% accuracy and 155 wins/341 losses

it's alright i guess, i don't play the game too much at the moment

Yeah I'm slow, I seem to get my best K/D ratios on Ground War games.

like RB

just hit level 70, do I don't I?

Have your fill of level 70 goodies then take the plunge, I'd say. It forces you to take a fresh look at, and approach to, the game. It does hurt for a bit though. You can still do well (my k/d ratio continued to climb after prestiging), but you do miss your favourite perks/weapons. Mind you, it also lets you have a nice "YES!" when you get the ACR back again.

Also, that extra weapons slot is really useful.

I need the extra slots - so many different classes and variants I want to make for those "If only I had X equipped" moments...

Its worth a second look at the default classes. I think most people forget about them when they ding level 4, but there are some excellent kits in there.

So where are the best spots to use air-support laptops without getting killed after a few seconds? On big maps like Quarry, derail or Wasteland you can go anywhere and get the time you need to use your chopper-gunner in peace. On Terminal I go down into the corner beside the plane, on Afghan there’s a table in the caves I like to hide under, on Rust I go up into the pipe in the corner but I often get killed, on Estate I go into the electrical compound area. Anyone got any other good spots?

I haven't played much FFA, but if you can get some distance try using the chopper gunner or AC130 to protect your own body if you see anyone closing in. It's not easy to pull off though.

FFA makes me feel so alone :) If the team is all boosting dickheads at least they're my boosting dickheads.

Estate has plenty, but a favourite for me is under the struts of the boat house, people don't often look there I find. It's a good spot to call in crates too, if you drop them in the water and wait you can pick people off

as they run in for them.

That whole area is nice and easy to guard for one person, really.
