I don't know, it just makes me angry. It pisses me off that such a large company (gameloft is essentially Ubisoft) can have such a factory production line of just copying other people's hard work. It's not like it's an homage or anything, it's entirely cynical. Nova isn't the only game of theirs that's like this. Pretty much their entire catalog of original IP is horrifically plagiarist. They should at least be trying to set some kind of creative standards or something, with that sort of money.

I don't think Gameloft have any connection with Ubisoft any more, beyond licensing their IP.

Their 'cloning' strategy only seems to have emerged in the last couple of years, and has become progressively more ridiculous. The folly of it is shown up particularly badly when they take the clone games to platforms where the genuine article already exists (like their God of War 'homage', which ended up on the PSP store).

They actually had to change the name and graphics of their Guitar Hero clone ("Guitar Rock Tour", or "Guitar Legend" as it was originally) because Activision were understandably unimpressed.

I can see the sense of it in the case of NOVA, it's not like there's ever going to be an official iPhone Halo game. Still a highly unwise strategy in the long term though. They're spending all this money on R&D but aren't getting any IP which they can make a long term business out of as a result.

Yeah, spot on. What I meant by the Ubisoft comment is that it was founded by the same guys and they have automatic 'free' access to all of Ubi's IP, like Assassin's Creed, HAWX etc., which puts them in a favorable position in comparison to most others. So like, make with the originality already.

They wouldn't do it if it didn't make any money, by buying it you're part of the problem to be honest.

So I bought Nova, and Gameloft are cunts. Literally not one idea is their own.

There's brutes, there's Cortana, the little dudes etc. all cribbed from Halo. Wait, actually, everything is cribbed from Halo. It's like they don't even care or are bothered to make the same ideas look even remotely different. Technically it's wonderful, but man, I struggle to play it because it's infuriating how much they steal! They must be entirely creatively bankrupt. I just don't get it. Massive budgets but no drive or will to come up with their own stuff.

Did popcap start this way too?

I like the 'knock off' aspect of Gameloft- they remind me of the gaming equivalent of Roger Corman, frantically scrabbling away to produce a quick clone of the big releases. Except the quality of their releases tends to be pretty high- and I'd love to be playing God of War, Diablo, Halo, Saints Row, Soul Calibur etc on the iPhone, but that's not going to happen. I can see why some people might think it's a bit shady, but then I stick on Dungeon Hunter and all is forgiven.

I think that that would also sort out the piracy issues.

Very briefly, until the pirates find a way around it, which they always do. Paid DLC is just more data downloaded and put into the app, it'll be just as easily pirated as apps are at the minute. Simply a matter of putting the DLC in the right place on your iPod/iPhone.

Aye. Can't really bring myself to recommend it over Real Racing, to be honest - it's certainly on the same level, but doesn't really have enough of its own ideas to justify the price. It's got a drift mechanic which is total pants (you have to suddenly jerk the iPhone in the direction you're turning to engage a drift, it's awkward and rarely works) but beyond that it's basically the same, with a load of pop music.

Also, if anyone was considering Metal Slug - DON'T.

Just played some more Glyder 2 - it's the first game but better - different litttle things to do, A-B flights now involve Pilotwings style rings, you can make playlists from your music to play, environments are interesting. There are also costumes and wings to collect and customise Errin with. Buy the game, put some Eno on and scratch that Pilotwings itch.

Liked the demo to one but never got round to buying the full version. Skip the first and get the sequel I assume? How much is it?

Oh and my most played game is Minisquadron atm.
