The iOS gaming thread

Bought this last night. I've got no idea what I'm suppose to be doing, having watched the tutorial!

Tutorial over-complicates it, but the game itself is simple to understand.

Rogue Planet is actually pretty good. a lot of time has been put into the presentation and the gameplay, which makes a change from the '...wheeeeee! fucking hell, touch screen!' novelty that sometimes happens.

plays exactly like Advance Wars, right down to the face-direction command, the ability to occupy buildings, and being given the choice of playable characters. i've only faffed about with the Quick Play mode, just to see how the controls work and without running through any tutorial i was able to get things moving after only a couple of rounds - including the sweet ability to rotate and zoom the map. a look through the available Quick Play maps shows different terrain and water, so i am guessing it has the same range of air/sea/land units as AW each with their own weaknesses and strengths.

encounters work in the same way - split-screen animation of the units, some blasty-blasty animation then the damage. one thing i did notice is the option to sacrifice your units instead of engaging in battle, choose that and they blow up and inflict damage on whatever is adjacent. took me a couple of rounds to work that one out

it doesn't have the chunky Tonka toy charm of AW, resembling more the gloss of Mass Effect and it may seem too slick to some but the depth and gameplay is certainly there. recommended.

Has anybody played Beat It! yet? It's getting very good reviews and the art style looks great.

I am. It's pretty amazing. The pixel art is gorgeous, I love the way it builds up the detail as you beat each level. I'm on the second world and it's getting bloody hard now.

My self imposed ban of buying new games was a total failure as predicted... geoSpark is indeed excellent. Current (rubbish) high score is 2,230.

edit: 4,260.

edit: 8,600.

I could do with some game recommendations. Hard to define what I'm looking for. Games with quite a big score element, preferably that I can look away from for a minute or two and not 'lose' but that isn't essential, etc.

I really, really, really like:

Drop7

Orbital

Trism

Bejeweled 2

Bookworm

Physics games are also kind of cool.

This is fantastic, very pleasing to look at and listen to, but I'm finding it bloody difficult.

It takes a slight dip in the second world I think, that or perhaps my ears are crap.

Yeah, that's where I'm stuck. On Burger? 2, I'm convinced I've got everything, all the blocks are sparkling, and I cannot for the life of me figure out what I've missed.

It's those green notes, at the top, some kind of drum. They barely make a sound, if at all. Which makes it almost impossible to know where to lay them down. Apart from this it's lovely. Like Fruity Loops crossed with Lumines and some awesome pixel art on top.

You were absolutely right, I was missing one bass drum note, and they're much easier to make out using headphones.

It's a little pricey at $4.99, but Labyrinth 2 is one of the best games I've played on the iPhone. It's the old 'guide the ball through the wooden maze' labyrinth-style game we're all familiar with, but this game adds elements like traps, pinball bouncers, doors, switches and cannons which make the levels much more varied and 'game-y'. Something like Mercury for the PSP (or Super Monkey Ball, Marble Madness), but much better in execution. The accelerometer controls are absolutely perfect; with a steady hand and the gentlest movement, you can inch your way around obstacles and holes with ease.

And there's also a section to download user-created levels. The levels I've downloaded have been very good (and mostly hard as nails). There's also 4 player multiplayer too, which is bloody brilliant. Highest recommendation from me.

Yup, I'm loving Lab 2 too. The Labrynth games never interested me previously, but I love Illusion Labs Touchgrind and Sway, plus it's got the create-a-level feature, so thought I'd give it a whirl.

Excellent game but it's getting really difficult where I'm upto now.

So I was browsing this thread in bed last night and decided to see what geoSpark was like.

You bastards! Thanks for ruining my nights sleep. Harbor master meets GeoDefense, it should have a health warning.
