Thanks for giving it a go!

It’s only just been updated with the new Cities and Towns quiz, which may have wider appeal than the Underground one in case anyone else fancies checking it out!

As for

.... I’d never heard of it! Is it somewhere in Yorkshire?

I've got a 12 hour flight tomorrow evening. Any recommendations? I'd kind of like to play an RPG of some kind, but there are so many on the app store I've no idea where to start. I liked Knights of Pen and Paper and I enjoyed replaying the KOTOR games through my phone but I fancy something new.

I also played the hell out of You Must Build A Boat, so something along those lines would also be appreciated.

Don't mind paying if the game is worth it.

a new ftp lemmings game has just been released

downloading now, could be good, or could be an IAP filled abomination to the original classic.

So far my impression is it’s very average.  Unlike Lemmings you don’t click on a lemming to them into, say, a digger you click on a grid cell & say dig here.  This does allow you to plan ahead and makes it less frantic, perhaps better for a mobile game but I think robs it of something.  The F2P system is energy, it doesn’t cost energy to enter a level (that I’ve noticed) but it costs energy to do all these actions in the level.  So naturally the cost of a level ramps up over time as they become more complex, e.g. the early levels were two or three actions, now they’re five to seven.  Cancelling an action returns the energy.

Energy refills over time, can be refilled with 900 in game coins, or you can pay £6.99 for 2 energy free hours.  The only other thing I can currently see to spend coins on are eggs which hatch collectible lemmings (from Tribes) unclear whether they affect gameplay but you are rewarded for completing a set of them.

After the start levels are setup to allow multiple ways through them, though anyone who has played lemmings before will be able to spot the optimal path.  Ties back to the energy system, punishing or taking advantage of inexperience players who will spend more energy to complete the same levels?  Generous win conditions, e.g. 5 of 15 lemmings saved.

Don't know if I’ll continue with it.  Mostly played it this afternoon to see if it was doing anything interesting and write a quick breakdown of it me mechanics & systems.

I believe I’m contractually obliged to recommend Motorsport Manager 3, it’s not exactly what you’re looking for but it could keep you occupied.

Have you played Reigns? It’s tangentially related to those styles of games, but also very much its own thing.

Also, take a look at Hoplite for a shallow as a puddle, deep as the ocean strategy puzzler.

I've just seen this on the Join Dementia Research website:

Play Sea Hero Quest and #gameforgood

Play Sea Hero Quest and help our scientists

People with dementia can face real challenges with navigation, and it’s a problem that can occur early on in the condition. However, we still don’t have reliable data on how navigational abilities can change in the healthy brain across life. Playing the game for just a few minutes will provide this completely anonymous data to help improve our understanding of navigational cognition. We’ll create a benchmark to help determine what goes wrong in the brain for people with dementia.

Alzheimer’s Research UK is helping support the analysis of the data the game generates, which could pave the way for improved approaches to early disease detection, in turn helping improve people’s chance of benefiting from new or existing treatments earlier.

Sea Hero Quest is an innovative way of rising to our greatest medical challenge. Playing for just a couple of minutes provides what would normally take scientists hours to achieve in conventional study recruitment.

This is interesting:

Quote

Last month, the editor-in-chief of MacRumors sister site TouchArcade, Eli Hodapp, announced that he planned to step down from overseeing the iOS gaming site to focus on a new venture. This week, Hodapp has provided more detail about his move to GameClub, a startup that plans to preserve premium mobile games in the wake of Apple's ongoing updates to the iPhone and iPad, which leave many classic games unplayable on modern devices.

As Hodapp explained on TouchArcade, Apple's frequent updates to the iPhone have caused ongoing problems for iOS developers on older App Store games. The first of these major issues hit during the release of the iPhone 4 in 2010 and its introduction of an increased resolution, which meant all developers needed to update their games with higher resolution textures.

While some developers decided to do this, others couldn't justify spending time and money to modernize their games. Of course, this issue grew exponentially worse with the introduction of iOS 11 in 2017, bringing with it the removal of all 32-bit apps from the iOS App Store. TouchArcade kept an ongoing list of every 32-bit app that was no longer supported with iOS 11, including the TouchArcade app itself.

"Throughout this process, I started to realize that, entirely by accident, TouchArcade had become this weird museum of the glory days of iOS gaming. Loads of games that passionate developers were excited to release to a hungry customer base now only exist in TouchArcade reviews, or TA Plays videos.

We’ve grumped about this a bunch, in multiple editorials, too many episodes of the podcast to count, a near infinite number of Tweets, and basically every other place you can air a grievance online. These complaints were often framed around, “I wish someone would do something," or “Why isn’t anyone doing anything," as our digital history vanished like a photo of the McFlys."

Now, Hodapp is leaving TouchArcade to address this issue with GameClub, a developer with the intent to bring the best of these forgotten and unplayable iOS games back to life. To achieve this, GameClub will handle all of the updates, ongoing maintenance, and support for each game, in essence becoming the new developer of the game.

These refurbished games will then be added into the GameClub library of games accessible by players. At this time, GameClub isn't disclosing the payment model that will be available to customers, but the company has stated that more news about the pricing structure will come later. The first announced title is Rocketcat Games' Hook Champ, which released in 2009.

Those interested can head to GameClub's website to sign up for early access to the beta program. Invites will start to go out on Monday, March 11. Hodapp also provided more details about vanishing App Store games in a piece shared on gamesindustry.biz.

If it includes Hook World then I'm in. It needs to include the Llamasoft games as well.

A great concept, having downloaded the app they’ve collected the research they need but you can still participate.

As basic as it is, this was a great little game to noodle around on, amazing that it’s been so successful. Hopefully it will give other people ideas for similar stuff.

Both work on current iOS. I want the remade HD versions to work though.

You're a star, I'd deleted both when I got the HD ones (because why not) and hadn't realised they'd, probably inadvertently, made the old ones 64-bit apps doing a bug fix.

It'll do for now.

Disappointing.

Ps4 controller is not supported. Touch screen controls only. This renders most games completely unplayable. For games that need d pad input like jrpgs for example might be ok.

i expect them to added controller support in the future I hope via a lightning to usb dongle.

Thats a shame, but it's a first step. No controller support rules it out for my lad I suspect.

I like Eli Hodapp (and TouchArcade has been a massive boon to the more hardcore mobile games scene) but he has some peculiar notions about how the business of games works.

There will be some cases where it's practical to update an old iOS game to meet modern requirements, but for the vast majority it will be very expensive and difficult, assuming the original code even still exists, and the owner wants anything to do with iOS again (good luck convincing Jeff Minter!).

But the more glaring issue is that his proposed company doesn't solve anything. If a game has been taken off the store because it was commercially non-viable on that store, reviving it won't magically fix that.

The way to preserve games that no longer work on their original intented platform is to make them available on other platforms where their availability isn't dependent on them being actively maintained, or to open source them so the community can step in to keep them alive.

The App Store has moved on massively over the years as well. Some of the early stuff that sold millions was very basic by modern standards - essentially Flash games - whereas today Fortnite, Minecraft and lots of direct ports of PC and console adventure and strategy games exist on the store (as well as so many awesome native original games, both premium and F2P). There are some people who would pay $1 to play Flight Control, Rolando or whatever again but I severely doubt there are enough of them to make a viable business.
