Warhammer Quest is a fantastic conversion of a mid-90s Games Workshop boardgame. The inherent easiness or harshness of any dungeon exploring all comes down to chance, as dice rolls occur in the background of every turn.

It's hugely loyal to the game itself but, as a result of explaining itself poorly, you don't actually know what is going on unless you pay very close attention or have played the original tabletop game.

Absolutely - I've not played the board game but I could kind of translate backwards to it from my limited experience of similarish games such as Descent and the D&D games. It might have been good to have had a bit more clarification of the basic rules tucked away at the back of the journal, just for reference.

At the beginning it can be really tough - the marauder rolls 1, the wizard 2or 3 which is insufficient to heal, the big guy is webbed and the elf can't hit for shit. Getting just one level up seems to make a big difference to routine encounters, but there is still a massive variation possible for any single quest, all depending on the dice. There is one red dungeon which is all about spiders, first go I was ambushed twice by groups of the bosses which hit 3 times each, second time around no such hassle and it was over very quickly. Trying to line up the weaker characters for the killing blow reminds me a bit of Disgaea too.

I love the feeling of exploration, the attention to detail to everything. Really classy.

It's a really nice adaptation, think I was just feeling a bit cheesed off last night at having to pay (a small amount admittedly)again for the second half of the game.

A few crashes here when leaving dungeons, the same issue as BGEE, I think it's memory related. Pad heats up something rotten when it is played.

I'm finding the main challenge is getting it to not crash. Most unimpressive and the game itself looks dull as dishwater.

From the fight screens I have seen they seem to have just re-skinned the hunters game?

Warhammer Quest cliff notes

Cheers for that. I'd inferred a few things but hadn't sussed why enemies were springing out of nowhere periodically. Probably works great as a board game but I'm not too enamoured with how stuff like that, along with really having to stack your party before pressing on, tends to play out.

Hunters 2 comes up so often that I ended up grabbing it -- not given it much time yet but yeah, you can tell they're closely related. The rules (particularly relating to how the map is revealed) do seem significantly different, though. Hopefully someone who has played both a bit more can clarify.

Re crashes, I've been finding it (Warhammer) will hang when enemies enter the field (on that screen you get telling you who has arrived to tickle your ribs) and when the CPU attempts a certain move. I had one game where I'd do what I wanted to do, then it would be the CPU's turn and it would attempt the same move as before and crash half-way through the same as before... ended up changing my tactics to force it to do something else. That might not always be an option though so it is, at least potentially, a game-breaker. Poor.

Couple of amendments to the WHQ notes:

Wizard's role fails on a 0, not a 1 as I stated, resulting in an encounter (event or ambush). This is actually slightly more lenient than the boardgame. They've kept the rule that, in the event of your Wizard being killed, your warriors have to roll at the start of their turn to see if there's an event and a fail results in the same thing.

The wizard gains spells on levelling up, rather than a random selection as per the boardgame. Levelling up also adds the other bit that was missing - he gets a "power" rating. Think of this as currency, a one time use per dungeon pocket of mana that he can draw on to cast spells when he rolls low. When it's gone, it's gone.

The looting aspect seems pretty good, though it's disappointing to keep finding gear that's only of use to the IAP characters (who I've not bought yet).

I've spent about 4 hours with this according to the game clock, and I'm loving it. I have had a couple of crashes, but it saves every turn or so. Had an epic battle last night where I lost my wizard one room from the end. Upon revealing the next room, it had 5 orc archers and an orc boss in it. In clearing it out, the marauder dropped and so did the elf, leaving my dwarf going toe to toe with 4 orc archers. He hits the first one and kills him in a single hit, resulting in a deathstroke - he gets a free swipe at the next adjacent monster. He gets him, and goes to the next and kills him. One to go! MISS! FUCK! The orc misses me though, so I try again. MISS! FUCK! The orc misses me again, and then the dwarf rolls a 0 and draws an ambush - 4 new enemies surround him. FUCK! He takes two of them out before they pepper him with arrows and YOU ARE DEFEATED.

I somehow managed to spend 5 hours playing warhammer quest over the weekend. It's top. 1 or 2 crashes and the mini gets a but warm now and then. Brilliant game. Level 4 elf kicks arse.

My dwarf is shit. He misses more than he hits. Is there any way of making him less of a cack hander?

I mainly use him as cannon fodder while the others mop up.

There is a ring you can buy for around 3500 gold for the dwarf and the marauder which supposedly significantly increases the likelihood of melee hits actually landing, but even with this, its not great. The alternative would be to equip a weapon which lists increased chance of hitting as an attribute, but I haven't found anything like that for the dwarf yet ( I have found such swords and daggers though which help to make the elf a very versatile character ).

It would be helpful to be able to access the detail of the enemies special powers, which I assume would be spelt out on the original cards. Some of the orcs in particular seem to have multiple defensive saving capabilities.

The magic pooling thing explains why the wizard becomes much more useful from level 2 onwards.

Needless to say, I bought both the expansion to this and KOTOR.

With the wizard. I found a couple of different hats/ hoods that add either to the store or +1 power.

When you hit level 3 you get more power per roll so he's more useable with getting 5-9 per turn rather than 1-4 which isn't enough for most spells

Also, is the grey the only wizard or if you start again could you get another type? Or do you just have to buy the other dudes?

Just started playing the free version of Dungeon Plunder. Played for about 20 minutes and spunked up for the full one

http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?threadid=180694

Nice roguelike with slot machine combat

Nice recommendation. I gave the free one a go and paid up for the full one after ten minutes or so- even though you could just continue playing the free one, I could tell I was going to have a lot of fun with it and wanted to pay for it.

Really nice balance between attack and defence, the slot mechanism fighting system is smart and fun, and dying is painful and miserable until you find your grave next time around and dig up and kill your zombified remains in revenge. I've only tried the Warrior and Magician so far- up to level 8 on the Magician so far, going to be shed a virtual tear when he finally gets obliterated.

Grey's the only one. I think you can buy an archmage too (presume this is the warrior priest looking at the extras). I know for the boardgame the Troll Slayer and the Warrior Priest are supposedly hard as nails.

Ha, one of these dropped as loot in the next dungeon. Made a huge difference and now he hits 2 out of 3 rather than the opposite.

No, there's a pure wizard as well. The warrior priest is separate.

Cheers I've played most of those, I meant new games as we seem to have fallen into a hexagonal shaped die theme of late.

While we're on the subject and the tips are flying, is getting to the Dice With Death square in Talisman as phenomenally unlikely as it seems? That's the mission I'm on at the moment, never having so much as seen the board game, and I can't help but suspect (hope) that I'm missing something.

Re Warhammer, do the spaces you fight in get more interesting later? The dungeons might be twisty and turny but each room is basically a rectangle!
