The iOS gaming thread

Depends on the kind of games you're looking for. For console style games it can feel compromised but there are some purely touch-based games that work really well. I have a certain fondness for Infinity Blade.

In a roundabout way it's the console that got me back into gaming after a lapse.

argh, new digital crack alert - motor world car factory - a freemium car builder in the style of kairosoft games, i sat down 90m ago for a quick go and can't stop

Puts me much more in mind of Nimblebit games than Kairosoft.

Yeah, you're probably right. I've just never found anything more than a 5 minute distraction until I get annoyed with the controls, but, to be honest, I've probably been looking at the wrong kind of games. I'll give Infinity Blade a try though and see how I get on with that. Is there anything else I should be looking at? Preferably not puzzlers though, as I've never been too keen.

I've always found League of Evil, Mos Speedrun, and 1-bit Ninja have lovely controls.

If a game has virtual controls, the controls are shit. There is literally no exception to this. The games might be playable, but you will always be fighting the controls and know in your head that if you were holding a controller, the game would be 20x more fun.

The games with the best controls are the ones built in the knowledge that they are iOS games, not the ones built for controllers and shoehorned onto iOS because that's where the market is.

So 1-bit is fine, the other two less so.

This is totally true.

I was enjoying that Alien Breed remake but my fingers would slip off the controls so much it got frustrating. I'd think do I want to play again? Nah, too frustrating. A real shame because it is superb. Until either they come up with tactile screens or we evolve transparent hands virtual controllers will be shit.

It's a bit confusing saying iOS anyway, as personally speaking the majority of my iOS gaming is done on the iPad, which makes a real difference. Most games work far better on pad than iPhone.

Apart from Tilt To Live, which is completely unsuited to iPad but the best game available on iPhone. SuperHexagon is also much easier on iPhone (but still good on iPad).

Are there any really compelling IOS games around? I mean like real top tier stuff, not the usual IOS bullshit.

As an example I think Super Hexagon looks amazing, I really admire the design purity there. I haven't played it though.

Year Walk is a steal for the price.

After having it sat on my phone unplayed since its release I finally decided to give Ridiculous Fishing a few goes the other night, man, I'm totally addicted to it now.

I didn't really get on with it before and had only had a few goes but once I got into the upgrading and improving my fishing techniques it's gotten better and better. Loving it and great to have a different style of game to play.

The new halfbrick game, Fish Out Of Water, is out and a quick play makes it feel like it has the same addictive tendencies as jetpack joyride. The Verge (http://www.theverge.com/2013/4/18/4238566/fish-out-of-water-is-an-insanely-addictive-game-from-the-team-behind) write up was particularly breathless, worth a 69p punt I reckon. Anyone who does give it a go join rllmuk league :)

I'm in. More depth to it, than you first realise.
