So the best games i've ever played on the iphone, like that i've played for many many hours are:

jetpack joyride

punch quest... kind off

joe danger touch

10000000

quick hook

middle manager of justice

fairway solitaire

field runners 2

+ ridiculous fishing and other quick on offs

Anything else that actually, ACTUALLY hits the buttons that they do?

My favourite iOS game ever is Super Stickman Golf, from Noodlecake Studios. The sequel came out recently, and it might even be better but I'm still playing it - more on that later.

I know lots of you have played it, but if you haven't I'm sorry for you. The above screenshot describes the game mechanic pretty well. That's one hole out of dozens of nine-hole courses, all designed with the risk-reward mechanic in mind, with a great difficulty curve. There's powerups that make your ball do amazing things so you can rack up high scores, but there's also achievements that reward you for ignoring them and playing as god intended. Clever little secrets too - I won't spoil anything - but really, every hole holds its own secrets, because experimenting with the powerups lets you break the level design and do wonderful things.

I got so into SSG that at one point, I started trying to work out the optimum score for each hole. Of course I got distracted, but some googling afterwards led me to find people who have actually done that shit, with massive Google Docs spreadsheets of difficulty grades, what powerups they used, everything. This game is definitely worthy of obsession.

Did I mention there's good online multiplayer too?

Anyway, SSG2 came out recently. Like I said, it might be better: new powerups, a levelling up system, a new basic mechanic where obstacles move and you have to time your shots, and hats.

Of course, there's the thorny issue of IAP. £1.49 nets you either:

A useful last-shot power indicator

Ability to play more online games at once

Double XP for levelling up

I've happily paid £3 for the first and third ones because it feels like they offer the complete game. It's absurd to think that such a great, deep game isn't worth £3.70 overall - that's a London pint.

You can also buy extra golf bux, and at the moment there's no way to unlock the last few hats without paying or grinding hundreds of online games. However, Noodlecake have said that an imminent update will fix the hat/bux balance and maybe provide more chances to get bux. Hooray!

...and relax. The only other iOS game I would happily write a post that length about is Swordigo, btw.

Game Dev Story

Sword & Poker

Carcassonne

Ticket to Ride

and to be honest I would have to say Angry Birds has been enjoyable, I've not played the other variations apart from the Xmas advent levels on seasons.

If you want a suitably-different Angry Birds fix then go for Angry Birds Space. The gravity really adds to it.

And another vote for Extreme Roadtrip 2. It's a game I find myself going back to again and again without really thinking about it.

Are there any really compelling IOS games around? I mean like real top tier stuff, not the usual IOS bullshit.

As an example I think Super Hexagon looks amazing, I really admire the design purity there. I haven't played it though.

I think this has been the first month in 2 years or more I haven't fired up geo defence.

Played that as much any game on probably any system I've ever had. Wish it was on the mac 2.

Can't believe they haven't done a proper sequel(didn't like swarm half as much).

I would add Magnetic Billiards to the best-of lists on previous pages, but overall I have to say that - 4 years on or what it is now - IOS is still missing that classic game, the one game that proves the format is worthy of being noted as a proper videogame platform, and not just have videogames available as secondary applications.

Most of the games mentioned in this thread are just rubbish.

Simply not true. iOS is my number one gaming platform by a country mile, personally. Take Pinball Arcade, the best pinball simulator - iPad is the best of all available platforms, and that is available on pretty much every format going.

If you were to catalogue all the games available on any single format into one thread, most of those would be rubbish too, so your point is moot.

Yeah, my iPhone is pretty much my only gaming platform now. It's nonsense to say iOS hasn't proven itself worthy.

Well I still haven't found a game I want to play and I've had an iPhone since the 3.

It's not the games though, it's the control method. I can't handle not having any kind of tactile feedback and I hate the way, on a lot of game, you end up with your fingers obscuring the view.

So, as a viable gaming platform, it's never going to win me over.
