The iOS gaming thread

So I finally got round to updating my iPhone 4 to iOS 6 today. All complete now, but every time I load up Game Center it crashes on startup, it just hangs for a couple of seconds on the green background then kicks me back to my icons screen. I've tried rebooting the phone to no avail.

Can anyone let me know how I can fix it?

There's a problem with it on landscape games I think. Try holding the phone in portrait whilst launching the app if it can rotate.

Oh hey, Blutrol has been updated to 3.0, and now supports virtual analogue controls... and PS3 controllers. So if you want to use an actual physical controller with pretty much any game, well, that's a thing you can do, now.

I'm seriously considering getting one of those HDMI adapters for my iPhone 4. When I'm away with work, stick a controller and an HDMI cable in my bag, and it's basically a console in my pocket to plug into hotel TV's!

I am rocking...

Rock Runners - Great Constant runner with excellent challenges.

The Meego - Anyone else playing this? A village Sim type thing with very colourful graphics with lots of positive JuJu.

King Cashing 2 - Amazing.

Might have to check out Happy Street. Joypod had put me off!

Ridiculous Fishing is out today. Buy it! (not just saying that because I'm Dutch, it's a great game)

Edge agrees:

That review, the 6 seconds trailer and the hilarious description https://itunes.apple.com/nl/app/ridiculous-fishing-tale-redemption/id601831815?l=en&mt=8'>here make it sound so good. Gonna buy it immediately when I get home.

That review is horrible. All it does is say how to play the game and give it 9/10. Same as every other RF review, it's like people are writing text to match the score they'd decided they were going to give it before they'd played it.

I'm still waiting for something to tell me why it's worth playing, or why it's actually good, because the description of the game doesn't really sound that good. If there's something to it that elevates it above any other game, that's what a review should be telling me.

Yeah, it could do a better job describing what exactly makes it so good, I was going off on the 9 (I don't know what makes you think that the 9 was decided beforehand though). But what I distilled from it is that it's just brilliant in its simplicity, much like other iOS greats like Super Hexagon, Ziggurat, Groove Coaster, etc.

It's basically the same phenomena I observed with Hundreds. It was by the right indie developer and it had the right amount of indie art direction and so everyone in the games media had decided it was going to be the next big thing before it came out. When it came out it got top marks from everyone because they'd already decided that they were going to like it and the reviews were written to fit.

Actually play Hundreds though and it turns out there's a very small handful of nice ideas, and then about 90 levels which are either filler or plain shit.

I'd bought into the hype, though, and feel like I wasted my money. I'm incredibly wary of indie games like this now when they receive the kind of hype that this is getting, especially when no one can actually explain why they even like the game or why they're recommending it.

Little Things Forever is free.

Basically gotta find stuff.

It's from the developer of ZONR, which is also great if you don't have it.

I'm sure it's a great game, but if I don't find the rocket in the next 5 minutes, there's gonna be some shit going down....

I'm not getting why Ridiculous Fishing is so hyped, seems nice enough but nothing special. I won't moan about £2 but don't see what raises it above the 69p app store fodder.

Stickman Golf 2 is very nice and I can see being a real time sucker.

Ridiculous Fishing looks like a fancy reskin of Super Dynamite Fishing, or am I missing something?

Edit: Ah, I see - it was cloned and this was the original version. Anyway, bought - nice to have a fully inclusive game on iOS for once that doesn't have a billion IAPs to make it playable.

Yeah, it's a very simple concept, but one that nobody thought of before (well, Ninja Fishing ripped off the Flash version of this completely as most of you will know). Great fun to play, good upgrade system, tons of content, nice clean art direction and a wonderful soundtrack. Also: no micro-transactions and fish that become hats.

That's basically all you need to know, but TouchArcade has a more in-depth review if you fancy that:

Rock Runners is really good.

I ditched my Happy Street addiction after Christmas...haven't quite got round to deleting the app though.

Playing Ridiculous Fishing but for some reason it's just not saving any of my scores and doesn't show any friends scores when I go to leaderboards and get it to show friends scores (friends who I know are playing the same game), any ideas?
