Got my first iphone. A 3GS. Now where the hell do i begin!

Also why are some games free...but when i click them via App store they're not?

Limited offers?

I know these aren't the most obvious choices people will give you, but I also know you like bullet hell shmups, so with that in mind...Cave have a bunch of games available based on their top console and arcade shooters - Deathsmiles, Mushihimesama, DoDonPachi, Espgaluda - they cost a bit more then your average 99p game (I think they can be around £7?) but worthwhile if you like those games. :D Just search for any of those names in the App Store to find stuff. :)

Careful, I think a lot of those require an iPhone 4.

I've never seen that. Games can change in price but if the App store main page says free, they're free.

If you're looking at old posts in this thread and expecting prices to never change then yes, that's why.

I'm having issues with Letterpress. It "forgot" all of my current games earlier today. They have finally reappeared but for a while I was unable to start a new game and couldn't access any of my ongoing games. :(

The servers seemed totally fucked for much of yesterday. Definitely having issues.

Does anyone remember Extreme Roadtrip, an addictive little freebie game where you do stunts in a car with a simple rotate left/right control mechanic?

Well they've released Extreme Roadtrip 2. They spruced it up, bolted on a Jetpack Joyride achievement system and made it about ten times more addictive. Still free, casual as you can get, and very good indeed.

Another thankyou for this - great little game. My Compact is all upgraded and the later missions are getting pretty hard, but can always nip back to some earlier missions with different cars. Nice!

Just got the Pistol. Gonna keep trying the harder missions with the Compact but I'll put some time into the little whippet too.

Hitting 5 mines is hard, seems that little bit too luck-based, but I've said that about previous missions so we'll see.

Is it worth getting then? That Knights of Pen and Paper? Looking at the screenshots I can't really tell how the game works.

Yeah, it's basically an old school RPG. Get your team together, turned based battle, level up, use magic, use defence, healing etc. The little twist is that it's all played out over a table with a Games Master, like it's all a game of Dungeons and Dragons, and the backgrounds change accordingly to where you are, but the table also stays the same.

You can also design your own 'random' battles, choosing what enemies to put in, how many of them etc. PocketGamer probably explains it better than I can. It's a review for the Android version and as far as I've played, the bugginess mentioned isn't around in the iOS one and I've had no crashes at all. Just spoilered for length, not for content-

Back in the glory days of role-playing, all we had to to make do with were 12-sided die, a tabletop, and someone with enough imagination to act as Dungeon Master (DM) to bring the adventure to life.

Home PCs and, later, consoles did their best to kill the classic Dungeons & Dragons experience with flashy graphics, carefully scripted stories, and ever more action-packed combat, but those who grew up on old skool RPGs have never lost their love for playing with pals in a world of their own creation.

Knights of Pen & Paper is an ambitious attempt to rekindle such ardent passion on Android that, while riddled with bugs and a clumsily translated script, still lights a fire in any retro gamer's heart.

You start by selecting an initial party of two heroes, although you can unlock more as you progress by tapping on a vacant chair before the older, wise-looking DM.

The characters are all kooky and span the gamut of fringe society, from nerds to hipsters and even an ET-alike. You can inbue these characters with traditional Warrior, Rogue, Paladin, or Mage roles to give you a range different abilities to call on - a balance of ranged, melee, and magic powers being the ideal combination.

Then you tap on the DM to receive quests to match your heroes' talents, all of which play out behind the table as though a projector has been set up to chronicle your adventures.

While the missions become more involved and story-based once you break the Level 10 barrier for your characters, early examples are rather blandly stereotypical scraps with rats, bats, and bigger bats.

The grind is alleviated somewhat by the fact that the DM can the number and identity of the attackers before the fight, either making for an easy scrap or a brutal, HP-sapping battles

With all combat reduced to little more than tapping on enemies to target them, though, the real meat of fighting comes from utilising each hero's unique powers - from meteor shower bomb attacks by the Mage to a deadly blade combo from the Warrior.

Everything from the in-game shop to the surprisingly expansive map is navigated using Kairosoft-style tap menus and feels beautifully streamlined for mobile play.

Admittedly, the whole experience is a little rough around the edges - with lots of crashes and phone resets occurring until recent patches - yet the developer Behold Studios appears to be working around the clock to iron out the wrinkles.

Knights of Pen & Paper may be too old-fashioned for some, but players craving an RPG that tickles that retro itch won't be able to resist its dicey charms. 8/10

You know the blue boost bar that appears when you do stunts? You need to do enough in a short space of time to get it to maximum.

A couple of big jumps in succession with lots of flips and perfect/perfect slam landings will usually do it.
