The iOS gaming thread

Hmm. I thought Carmageddon looked a bit cack at Eurogamer Expo. It's a bit nicer on the iPhone than the iPad (the rubbish car models aren't as noticable). They really should have updated it though. The physics are ridiculous. Oh, and it wipes your save if you get signed out of Game Center for any reason(!).

Apart from all that the underlying game is still good. Just... such a missed opportunity.

...

I don't think anyone has mentioned that Terry Cavanagh's Don't Look Back just came out on iOS (and I think Android) this week? Free, short but very clever little microgame.

I was really enjoying Carmageddon until I fell foul of the compulsory iCloud saving and the way it apparently deletes your save if it can’t get through to iCloud. Given that I – and probably lots of people – play games while travelling, or in other areas that don’t have 100% 3G coverage, or even irresponsibly play games on my non-3G iPad when out and about, this is about the worst thing they could possibly have done.

I mean, what were they thinking? iCloud saves never fucking work anyway (for me at least) so making it the only way you can save games is idiotic. I assume it’s using iCloud, anyway, anyway – I don’t see any option to save locally, and I had a proper faff last night with it deleting my progress after I’d finished a race because it had found a more recent save midway through the game.

The game otherwise seems ace, so I’m slightly baffled that they’ve hobbled it in this way, as it means progress is pretty much impossible.

Save trauma aside, I’m surprised how well Carmageddon’s physics stand up today. They’re obviously really crude compared to modern games, but they’re still fun and throw up some exciting crashes. It’s weird because the game’s impact is colossally diminished by time – in 1997, the idea of having a full 3D driving game where you could just go anywhere and run over people and discover hidden areas and also run over people was mind blowing. Now that we’ve had literally all the Grand Theft Autos, the idea of having a free-roaming driving game where you can run people over isn’t as exciting in itself, but the chunky physics and general solidness mean it’s still fun.

Did you play it first time around?

No, so I don't have that nostalgia-thing going on. Maybe I'm not playing it properly - I try and win by doing laps, splatter a few people as I go round and avoid hitting the other cars, as you stop quite abruptly if you smack into them. The pull out map is quite a nice feature, though.

I would say nostalgia plays a massive part in this but i wouldn't expect they would release this game through that tactic alone.

You can finish the level by totaling the other cars or doing laps. Start by just doing laps to finish so you can build up your car to a beast although a decent head on collision can take out another player quite easily.

Carmageddon is great. The controls must be a bitch for people not used to it, but they are part of the fun. (sliding sideways for 60ft before plowing into a group of people).

How do I get the map up? Also, I miss the replay mode.. that was pretty good, seeing the peds running away in fear as your car speeds towards them in the distance.

Ok last bragging about Super Hexagon post but I figured this may be interesting for anyone who wants to see a big run through. (You may not want to watch as it progresses through and spoils all the stages). :)

Oh well done, looks like those hacked scores on hard mode have been removed as well! :) I don't know how the horrible screen swings don't distract you more on hardestestest. Pah. I am still to break 30 seconds on that mode.
